The God of Abram
The God of Abram
God’s Gift to Abram was a Gift of Sight! The Word “Said” translated means gave the ability to see. God’s Gift to Abram was the ability to see things that don’t yet exist!
Now the Lord had said to Abram:
“Get out of your country,
From your family
And from your father’s house,
To a land that I will show you.
I will make you a great nation;
I will bless you
And make your name great;
And you shall be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you,
And I will curse him who curses you;
And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother’s son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan.
Terah Abram’s father lived to be 205 He set out to go to Canaan but settled in Harran.
“See God’s promise” (Believe)
What promises are you believing for?
God is a God of promises!
God’s promises contradict and challenge the status quo
Promises Require that we STEP INTO what God has for us as we STEP OUT of things that are hindering the promise from being fulfilled.
“God is not a man, that He should lie,
Nor a son of man, that He should repent.
Has He said, and will He not do?
Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.
Don’t Settle (do the hard work)
Fear not, for I am with you;
Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you,
Yes, I will help you,
I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’
Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.
You won’t make it to the promises if you are willing to settle!
The Mayflower
The Mayflower was a 90 foot ship that on September 16 1620, headed toward the “New World” with 102 passengers. Their goal or destination was Virginia.
However due to stormy weather and navigational errors they were blown more that 500 miles off course and landed in Massachusetts. On November 21st they landed at the tip of Cape Cod
They landed right before Christmas. Half died of diseases the first year. It was a very difficult thing.
All because they believed the promise of the “New World”
During their journey over they signed a document called the “Mayflower Compact”
A Civl Body Politic - that established the rule of the majority the first precursor to American democracy.
Be Patient and Wait on the Lord (persevere)
The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.
For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.
We need God’s Help to:
Believe!
Do the hard work
To be patient
Let’s ask For God’s help!
Only Jesus can Help us!
A promise that meant things would change.
Abraham had to Choose to leave everything behind to receive the promise
You cannot hold on to your life and the promise of God!
We can be too worried about our life to listen and obey the promises.
But our life is nothing if lived outside of the promises of God
The Promise Of God to Us Is Faithful
By faith Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and she bore a child when she was past the age, because she judged Him faithful who had promised.
And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb. He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform.
Abraham lost one of his brothers
Abraham takes Sarai as his wife and she is barren (she was his half sister)
Abraham’s dad takes them all from Ur to Canaan, but he never made it there. They settled in Haran
Sarai has no beginnings and no continuation through a child - she was the weak link in the chain of blessing.
Her being barren dominates the story of Abraham. since the divine promise involved a Abraham and Sarai having a son and many descendants
There was a need for God to intervene.
Sarai emerges by God’s gracious intervention to achieve the regal stature that her name “princess” conveys. She becomes the matriarch of all Israel.
Terah died in Haran. He went no further.
