Luke 22:19-20
Luke 22:19-20
Remember, lest we forget! Remember that not only a body, but the body of the Son of God was broken, in order for Him to take God’s wrath that was due us! Remember the blood that was poured out, for the remission of sins, the cleansing of the believer before God!
Remember lest we get highminded and think more highly of ourselves!
Romans 12:3 “For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.”
Remember What of Whom was given and What of Whom was poured out!
The body of Jesus was given, Jesus, God the Son of God was given a body to give it for us, as a sacrifice!
John 12:23 “John 12:23 “And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.”
John 12:27 “Now is My soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.”
For this cause, came Jesus......His glorification.....which is His sacrifice......
His soul was troubled at the giving of His flesh......not because He wanted to keep it but because of how it would be given.
Jesus’ soul being troubled is a strong term, which signifies horror, anxiety, and agitation.
Jesus’ contemplation of taking on the wrath of God for the sins of the world caused a horrific stir in the soul of the sinless Savior!
The body of Jesus was given to satisfy the wrath of God for or on mankind! God gave what was due to us, to Jesus!
The blood, then, that was poured out is a cleansing, wiping away our sins, as was done on the mercy seat by the animal sacrifices! The New Covenant!
Leviticus 17:11 “For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.”
Jesus said in Matthew 26:28 “For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”
Hebrews 9:22 “And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.”
Finally putting all of this together, I believe Romans 5 sums it up!
Romans 5:9-10 “Much more then, being now justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. 10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.”
1 Corinthians 15:22 “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.”
This is of the highest order to remember! What Jesus gave and poured out! He told them that no one takes His life, He gives it!
Paul said: 1 Corinthians 1:23 “But we preach Christ crucified........”
What else is there to preach? What else is their to remember?
Spurgeon preached: “He himself regarded his death as the very centre, heart, and soul of what he would fix on our memories. Therefore those who say that his example is everything, or his teaching is everything, do greatly err; for when we remember him, the first thing to be remembered is, “He hath redeemed us to God by his blood.” “Redeemer” is the name to which our memories must most tenaciously cling. His blood, his redemption, his atonement, his substitutionary sacrifice are always to be kept to the front. “We preach Christ crucified,” and you believe in Christ crucified.”
So, when we come to this table, to remember it is not for show, it is not to just get it over with or something we got to do! It is off the scale way more than that, it is to remember what has been given and poured out to make us right before God!
Alas, how sadly have men forgotten this! The plain supper has not been a grand enough display. To break bread, and to drink wine, have not seemed to them to be sufficiently solemn, or sufficiently gorgeous, and so they have added all kinds of rites and institutions.
He does not say, “Do something else in remembrance of me—something which you may choose to do, retaining this act as the backbone of it; but this do.” This which has just been done: this in all its simplicity, solemnity, and intent.
Back in the time of the early church, it didn’t have a specific time on the event........When believers were together they broke bread in memory of Christ—any two or three of them—and so they remembered Him.
Finally, Spurgeon in the same sermon I quoted from earlier said this: “But there is yet one more thing. It is this. You are taught by this institution that the very best way in which you can remember Christ is by receiving him. Oh the sweetness of that truth if you will remember it when you come to this table! You are not asked to bring bread with you. It is here. You are not asked to bring a cup with you. It is here already provided. What have you to do? Nothing but to eat, and to drink. You have to be receivers, and nothing more. Well, now, whenever you want to remember your Lord and Master, you need not say, “I must do something for him.” No, no, let him do something for you. “Take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord.”
We must also come to the Lord’s table examining ourselves. Before we partake, we must look inwardly, at what and how we believe in this Christ! 1 Corinthians 11:27-29 .............
Unworthily-come to the Lord’s table clinging to your sin, treats His body and blood lightly!
Hebrews 10:29 “Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?”
Let’s not partake of this precious sacrament lightly! This is not a light thing, this is a covenant between us and God!
1 Peter 1:18-19 “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:”
Let us always remember what was given and poured out and by Whom it was given and poured! Let us not take it lightly!
