Welcome Redeemer Church, back to another wonderful day that the Lord has made! So thankful to be with you again! Can you believe we have only a little over a month left of the house church? Time is flying by so let us cherish this time while it is here. As a the great theologian, Any Bernard from Dunder Mifflin once said, “I wish there was a way to know you were in the good ole days before you actually left them.” Well I want to encourage you that the good ole days are just getting started. God has wonderful things in store for Redeemer Church and it is our prayer to simply be in obedience to Him and see miracles and wonders happen here in St. Albans!
Last week we started talking about our core values. Let’s take a look at them again:
Biblically Rooted
Christ-Centered
Community Minded
God Glorifying
As we said last week, these values are what defines Redeemer Church, that defines us as a body of believers. And least week we began on the first value of being Biblically Rooted, touching first on the authority of Scripture in our lives that is anchored in its primary authorship, namely God.
Now this week we will be looking at another facet of the Bible and what logically flows out of its divine origins; we will look at what is called Biblical Inerrency and Biblical Sufficiency.
But before we dive in, let us pray.
The Natural Flow
The Natural Flow
Biblical Inspiration = Biblical Innerency
Defining Terms- literal truth vs. literalism- pg. 269 (mustard seed not smallest seed, paraphrasing OT quotes, etc./ various forms of literature that is not meant to be taken literally or precisely)
Chicago Statement of Faith pg.270
Original Manuscripts vs. Our Bibles pg. 267
We should not fear using copies since everyone in OT and NT used copies. Faith in God’s preserving His word (Isa. 40:8)
Number of Manuscripts and reliability
What is the Extent of Inerrancy?
What is the Extent of Inerrancy?
What does it mean that the Bible is without error? “The God of truth speaks truth”- Carl Truman (also possibly Al Mohler’s quote on pg. 271)
What topics does this include? History, metaphysics, sciences
But what about contradictions?
No contradictions but there are mysteries and paradoxes
Some have tried to pave a middle way- Limited Inerrancy- there are errors in Scripture, even contradictions, but in its main spiritual teaching, it is innerant. How do you distinguish between what is erroneous and what is not? Falls back into preference. Ultimately, if you deny the inerrancy in one sense, you essentially deny it as a whole.
Sufficiency
Sufficiency
If the Bible is inerrant in all it teaches, that means it is sufficient
