Today we are starting a new message series called Summer School. Some of you are having flashbacks to your middle and high school days, but I promise you, this won’t be that bad! In this series, we are looking at some basic beliefs that we have as the church today. A lot of what we will talk about may be stuff you already know.... GREAT! But our goal is to help all of us gain a better understanding of these 8 topics by the end of the summer!
This morning, we are going to focus on the very nature of who God is by looking at what can be the most confusing belief we hold.
It has been a common argument in our house with my little ones over who God is. I can remember hearing Elsie Jo correct Daniel the first time, “No, Daniel. Jesus IS God!” To which Daniel replied, “No, he’s Jesus.” Then I broke up a fist fight and said, “Both of you are right!”
The argument my kids were having was not a new one! It has existed from the earliest days of Christianity! How can the Bible refer to God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit? Is it three gods or one?
Here’s what I need you to know this morning… You will not leave here with a super clear picture of how the Trinity relationship works. You will not go to lunch today with all of your questions answered. But let me tell you.... That’s a good thing!
A verse that helped the Israelites a ton long ago says this...
Deuteronomy 29:29 CSB
The hidden things belong to the Lord our God, but the revealed things belong to us and our children forever, so that we may follow all the words of this law.
Moses helped the Israelites out by reminding them that there are a bunch of things that God has revealed to us in his Word about himself. We can know the character of God in that he is loving, gracious, full of justice, peace, and mercy. He’s all-knowing, all-powerful, and ever present. We know that he loves all nations and has a desire for all men to come to repentance. There are a lot of things we can know.
But after Moses retells the law to the new generation of Israelites there before entering the Promised Land, Moses tells them that there are revealed things that belong to us, and there are hidden things which belong to the Lord.
