The gifts and the Trinity
Gifts are attributed to the Holy Spirit,
1 Corinthians 12:4 NASB95
4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit.
Administrations to the Lord Jesus,
1 Corinthians 12:5 NASB95
5 And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord.
Operations to God the Father,
1 Corinthians 12:6 NASB95
6 There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons.
What are 3 reasons for spiritual gifts?
Edify the Church
1 Corinthians 14:12 NASB95
12 So also you, since you are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek to abound for the edification of the church.
2. Affirm the apostles.
2 Corinthians 12:12 NASB95
12 The signs of a true apostle were performed among you with all perseverance, by signs and wonders and miracles.
3. Affirm the Word
Mark 16:20 NASB95
20 And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the word by the signs that followed. And they promptly reported all these instructions to Peter and his companions. And after that, Jesus Himself sent out through them from east to west the sacred and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation.

It is God desire that we understand the gifts.

1 Corinthians 12:1 NASB95
1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware.
Spiritual gift is the word, charismata (χαρισματα)]. Special gifts bestowed by God on individual members of the Christian community for the edification of the whole community.
the term “spiritual gifts” covers all endowments of the Spirit found in Christian experience and designed to be of service to the Church
Charisma means literally a “gift-in-grace,” deriving from charis, “grace.”
Spiritual implies deity, in this case God. Gift implies that which is giving.
Though this is a supernatural gift. God doesn’t want us to be ignorant or unaware.

3 things to understand

Now there are varieties (diversities) of gifts
There are many gift.
Thats why we are taken this class to learn learn them.
Romans 12:6 NASB95
6 Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith;
We all have different gifts, at least we should all have different gifts.
2. And there are varieties of ministries (administration)
1 Corinthians 12:5 NASB95
5 And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord.
And there are assignments of acts of service
Ephesians 4:12 NASB95
12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ;
3. There are varieties of effects (or operations)
1 Corinthians 12:6 NASB95
6 There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons.
workings. Outward manifestations and results of spiritual gifts.
Philippians 2:13 NASB95
13 for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.
Ephesians 1:19 NASB95
19 and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might
Something to remember
Romans 11:29 NASB95
29 for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.
Here is that word, “charisma” which speak of that which is supernatural or given by God.

Prophecy

Revelation 19:10 NASB95
10 Then I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “Do not do that; I am a fellow servant of yours and your brethren who hold the testimony of Jesus; worship God. For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”
In the New Testament, the gift of the prophet is not so much to foretell events, since the Bible has been written, the prophecy stands, and all the events have been foretold that God wants to foretell. The gift of prophecy in the New Testament is to tell forth and to see with an anointed eye unto due season. AW Tozer
Gift of proclaiming God’s word.
This has to be divine.
Why? Because this is the communicating of the mind of God to the mind of man.
Romans 12:6 NASB95
6 Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith;
This cannot be done without faith.
The idea here is not prediction alone, but declaring truth.
why according to the proportion of his faith?
Because sometimes its a warning, exhortation, instruction, or judgement.
That is, prophesying—communicating God’s message, to strengthen, encourage, and comfort
1 Corinthians 14:1–2 NASB95
1 Pursue love, yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. 2 For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God; for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries.
Why?
1 Corinthians 14:3 NASB95
3 But one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation.
2 Peter 1:21 NASB95
21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
Prophecy is a gift and comes from God
Acts 2:17 NASB95
17 And it shall be in the last days,’ God says, That I will pour forth of My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream dreams;
Acts 2:18 NASB95
18 Even on My bondslaves, both men and women, I will in those days pour forth of My Spirit And they shall prophesy.
You will know its supernatural because son, daughter, and even bondslaves will prophesy.

Some Characteristic of the gift of Prophecy

The need to express their thoughts and ideas verbally
especially when matters of right and wrong are involved.
Thats thy the first question on the test was, “do you enjoy or would enjoy speaking to groups.”
Acts 2:14 NASB95
14 But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: “Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words.
2. Make quick judgments about what they see and hear
They also tend to express their views before others speak.
One example is Peter who spoke first more than any any other disciple,
On the negative they can tend to Jumps to conclusions or speak when they shouldn’t be.
3. Ability to discern the character and motives of people
2 Peter 2:1–3 NASB95
1 But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves. 2 Many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of the truth will be maligned; 3 and in their greed they will exploit you with false words; their judgment from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.
4. They react strongly to any form of deception or dishonesty. (hatred of evil)
Romans 12:9 NASB95
9 Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good.
5. The Dependence on Scriptural truth to validate his authority
1 Peter 4:11 NASB95
11 Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
6. A desire for outward evidence to demonstrate inward conviction.
1 Corinthians 14:25 NASB95
25 the secrets of his heart are disclosed; and so he will fall on his face and worship God, declaring that God is certainly among you.
7. A desire to see God word be confirmed with demonstration of Power.
1 Corinthians 2:1 NASB95
1 And when I came to you, brethren, I did not come with superiority of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you the testimony of God.
1 Corinthians 2:1–4 NASB95
1 And when I came to you, brethren, I did not come with superiority of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you the testimony of God. 2 For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. 3 I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling, 4 and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,
8. A concern for the reputation and Kingdom of God.
2 Samuel 12:14 NASB95
14 “However, because by this deed you have given occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, the child also that is born to you shall surely die.”
Exodus 32:11–14 NASB95
11 Then Moses entreated the Lord his God, and said, “O Lord, why does Your anger burn against Your people whom You have brought out from the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? 12 “Why should the Egyptians speak, saying, ‘With evil intent He brought them out to kill them in the mountains and to destroy them from the face of the earth’? Turn from Your burning anger and change Your mind about doing harm to Your people. 13 “Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Your servants to whom You swore by Yourself, and said to them, ‘I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heavens, and all this land of which I have spoken I will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.’ ” 14 So the Lord changed His mind about the harm which He said He would do to His people.
“Why should the Egyptians speak, saying, ‘With evil intent He brought them out to kill them in the mountains and to destroy them from the face of the earth’?
