God is Holy v1-3

God is Separate

Isaiah 55:8–9 ESV
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Genesis 1:1 ESV
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

God is sinless

James 1:17 ESV
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

God reveals Himself as glorious

Psalm 29:2 ESV
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.
Romans 1:20 ESV
For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

We Are Lowly v4-7

We Are Undone

Isaiah 53:6 ESV
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Romans 11:32 ESV
For God has consigned all to disobedience, that he may have mercy on all.
Jonathan Edwards - July 8th, 1741- Sinners in the Hands of an angry God
[men and women] deserve to be cast into hell; so that divine justice never stands in the way, it makes no objection against God’s using his power at any moment to destroy them. Yea, on the contrary, justice calls aloud for an infinite punishment of their sins. Divine justice says of the tree that brings forth such grapes of Sodom, “Cut it down, why cumbereth it the ground?” Luke 13:7. The sword of divine justice is every moment brandished over [your] heads, and it is nothing but the hand of arbitrary mercy, and God’s mere will, that holds it back.
Unsaved
John 3:36 ESV
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
Romans 8:7 ESV
For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot.
By nature, our wills are bound; we are addicted to sinning!
Why do you keep failing to do good? Apart from Christ, you can never consistently follow God; it is impossible
Saved (remember, this is NOT Isaiah’s conversion)
Romans 11:18 ESV
do not be arrogant toward the branches. If you are, remember it is not you who support the root, but the root that supports you.
Indian philosopher named Bara Dada 1920s:
“Jesus is ideal and wonderful, but you Christians, you are not like him.”
Was your sin so light as to be overlooked by God, with no need of Calvary?
Is your sanctification so fully completed that you view yourself as inherently righteous?
Easy test: do you wonder who the sermon is for, or do you know that if it is Bible, it is for you?
Would you have dropped your stone and walked away knowing you were not without sin?
We would like to think the dangers are in those other kinds of churches, but Jesus taught us to look at self first.
Note that Isaiah began with, “I am lost,” before speaking of others.
“People who preach grace ought to have some.” - Jeff Noblit

Shaken Foundations

Last week - The Spirit must take truth to your heart
Shaken foundations = fundamental disruption of your life
It was the proclamation that caused it

We can be Rescued, Saved v6-7

Sin is atoned for
Therefore, guilt can be taken away
First we are humbled (v5)

Our Response

We must acknowledge God as He is
v5: ...my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of Hosts
We must be humbled
v5: …Woe is me! For I am lost / undone
We must have a positive desire for change; for holiness
seeing the Holiness of God led Isaiah to see his lack
Psalm 119:36 ESV
Incline my heart to your testimonies, and not to selfish gain!
We must surrender absolutely
“Send ME!” (without condition)
We must experience God personally
What is God calling YOU to?
Are you actually lost and undone, needing to be saved?
Look to Christ, His cross and His resurrection and be saved.
Are you a believer, convicted over remaining sin in your life? Are you a believer who has fallen into the trap of seeing self as holy instead of lowly?
Look to Christ, His cross, and His resurrection. Be changed yourself, restored and brought closer yet to our Lord.
While many claim experiences with God, we should seek authentic, personal, and transformative experiences, beginning at conversion, but continuing for the rest of our lives. We must view ourselves as lowly in light of the Holiness of our God. Then may we be like Isaiah, and transformed cry out, “Here am I, send me!”
