Preach The Whole Counsel

Acts 20:27 ESV
27 for I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God.

This Means The “Hot Topics.”

This would be ethical, moral, social, and cultural issues.
Gambling
Colossians 3:5 ESV
5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
Social Drinking
Proverbs 23:31 ESV
31 Do not look at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup and goes down smoothly.
Ephesians 5:18 ESV
18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,
Tobacco use
1 Peter 1:13 ESV
13 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
Abortion/Euthanasia
Romans 1:29–32 ESV
29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.
Divorce & Remarriage
Matthew 19:9 ESV
9 And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.”
Also…

This Means “Foundational Topics.”

Such as…
The gospel of Jesus Christ, the death, burial, and resurrection.
1 Corinthians 15:1–4 ESV
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
Anything that would be considered the “pure spiritual milk” of God’s word.
1 Peter 2:2 ESV
2 Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation—

Summary

A s a local preacher I must make certain that I preach the “whole counsel” of God and not get on any hobby horse.
This isn’t always easy either because of the fact that worship must happen on all intellectual levels.
You babes in Christ who need to grow from the lesson (Hebrews 5:12-14).
You have seasoned Christians who need to grow from the lesson (2 Timothy 2:2).
You have the unfaithful who need to repent from the lesson (Galatians 6:1).
You have the non-Christian, who might not even know they are, that needs to become a Christian (Acts 2:37).
Sermons must motivate properly through the message being delivered, but preachers can only do this properly when they…

Preach In Season & Out Of Season

2 Timothy 4:2 ESV
2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.

In Season Sermons.

These are sermons that are ment to build up and encourage through joy and edification because the congregation is doing great spiritually.
Such as sermons on the “Love of God.”
Romans 5:8 ESV
8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
John 3:16 NKJV
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Sermons on how we can encourage each other.
1 Thessalonians 5:11 ESV
11 Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.
Hebrews 10:24 ESV
24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,
As much fun as it is to preach these sermons and help a faithful congregation grow it is just as important to preach the…

Out Of Season Sermons.

These are sermons that focus on the division sin is causing in a congregation.
All sin causes division if left unchecked.
Galatians 5:7–9 ESV
7 You were running well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? 8 This persuasion is not from him who calls you. 9 A little leaven leavens the whole lump.
There is no specific sermon “list” if you will but these sermons are specific to the issue at hand.
I told the men, if there are sin issues that come up we will discuss them as a group until it is rectified, but if the men ever get to the point where they are no longer willing to discuss it or correct it expect sermons on it.
When things are tough sermons must still be preached.
A congregation that is struggling doesn’t need to be coddled with feel good sermons that only mask or hide the issue.
A sermon, in these cases, shouldn’t be passive aggressive but flat out explain the sin, and how to correct it biblically with toes and egos not the focus but God’s word.
Jesus didn’t mix words with the Jews “his congregation” when it came to sin that plagued them.
Matthew 12:34 ESV
34 You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
Matthew 23:27–28 ESV
27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness. 28 So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
Paul didn’t mix words either.
1 Corinthians 6:9–11 ESV
9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Summary

Sermons must cover the whole counsel of God and must be preached “in season and out of season.”
Not only must sermons be preached in season and out of season but Paul gave Timothy, 2 Timothy 4:2, how he was to…

Preach In A Biblical Manor

2 Timothy 4:2 ESV
2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.

Reprove

This means to bring to attention & thus expose the problem.
In other words, to bring the sin out in the open not run from it.
When necessary sermons are to expose the weaknesses of a congregation that they may be strengthened.
Revelation 3:19 ESV
19 Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent.

Rebuke

This means to literally "censure severely" that which has been exposed.
In other words, sin is wrong and leads the soul to spiritual death.
Romans 3:23 ESV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Sin cannot be tolerated but severely reprimanded.
1 John 2:4 ESV
4 Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him,

Exhort

This means to encourage & strengthen.
A sermon ought to not only expose and censure but also encourage and strengthen.
It does no good to know what the shortcomings are and how bad they are in the sight of God if one is not told how to correct the situation and the joy that comes from repentance, confession, and the forgiveness of sins.

Summary

There will be times when there is no need to reprove and rebuke but the reality is the church is made up of humans that have obeyed the gospel (Romans 6:3-5) and therefore is made up of people that sin even as God’s children (1 John 1:7-10).
As God’s children we should not “dislike” or “get angry” at sermons that reprove and rebuke but rather rejoice that the preacher loves each one enough to say I want you to go to heaven and here is what it takes to get there.

Conclusion

Preaching and thus sermons are not about how “entertained” they can make the congregation.
A new a man that send me a video of a denominational preacher preaching and throughout the entire “lesson” he used zero scripture. He told a lot of jokes and had a lot of interesting stories.
The email had written in it, “I want to go to that guys church.”
I’m not saying a sermon cannot have a joke in it or a story but the pure, undefiled, word of God is all that should be truly desired.
Psalm 119:105 ESV
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
So the next time your toes are tapped upon and your heart is pricked by a sermon that has obviously done its job, remember the two powerful passages of the great apostle Paul.
1 Corinthians 9:16–17 ESV
16 For if I preach the gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting. For necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! 17 For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward, but if not of my own will, I am still entrusted with a stewardship.
Galatians 4:16 ESV
16 Have I then become your enemy by telling you the truth?
Invitation
Isaiah 59:1–2 ESV
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
Philippians 2:6–7 ESV
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
Romans 10:17 ESV
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Hebrews 11:6 ESV
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Acts 17:30 ESV
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
Matthew 10:32 NKJV
32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.
2 Thessalonians 1:8 ESV
8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
1 Corinthians 15:1–4 ESV
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
Romans 6:3–5 ESV
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
1 John 1:7 ESV
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
