Lesson 10: Through the Blood
Lesson 10: Through the Blood
Col 1:20-23
As we have mentioned in weeks past, Paul has shown us who Christ is.
He is the beginning of all things
By Him, we have all that we have today. It is because of Him that we are so blessed today.
Paul showed us the vastness of God but all he shows us how far He came down to man - what He was willing to do for us each of us that we could be saved. We have seen that it is all about Christ. It is all about Him. Tonight we will dwell upon one of the most wonderful things about Him, and that is what He gave for our salvation. We have seen Him at his heights, now we can see Him at his depths.
Can I remind each of us this evening that we are not saved because of our looks, our wonderful personality, or our strength. We are not saved by being good or doing good. We are not saved by great feats of courage or by a great degree of holiness or ability. We are not save being religious or performing cermonies or rites.
We are not saved by committee, a board, or going through a class. We are not saved by a Creed, an ordinance or a doctrine. We are saved by any of these things, rather we are saved THROUGH THE BLOOD. And not just any blood, but the blood of Jesus Christ.
What is so important about the blood of Jesus Christ?
It is Royal blood
It is Righteous blood
It is Redeeming blood
It is Renewing blood
I. Through the Blood we have Peace v.20a
I. Through the Blood we have Peace v.20a
I want you to think deep and intensely about the this truth and what it should mean to you and I and what has been done for us.
When God came down to the earth and was born of a virgin, and lived a simple and at times no doubt austere life, that he had one thing on his mind - Peace.
When Jesus Christ started his ministry around the age of 30, he was not looking to to set up his throne right then or establish Israel as a world power - he came to offer peace.
When the Lord was challenged about the authority of Rome and whether or not it was right to pay them tribute - he did not call for rebellion against this tax or the state that they were a vassal of at the time - instead - He told Peter to pay the tax for the two of them and continued with his call for peace.
Rather than battle and power over the world - the Lord gave us the power of peace:
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
There is no doubt that the world bring trouble and harm to His children - the Lord said you never had peace in the world anyway.
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
When the Lord hung on the cross of Calvary aftet they had beaten Him and abused Him, and even while they mocked Him that He could not save Himself - Instead of Wrath Christ gives peace
Perhaps then we can better understand the verse:
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
His peace is what gets us through:
A. His peace gets us through our dark trial
B. His peace conducts through the storm
C. His peace will bring us safely over to the other side
II. Through the Blood we have Reconciliation vv.20b-21
II. Through the Blood we have Reconciliation vv.20b-21
Remember, never did need to reconcile himself with man, rather man has always need to be reconciled back to God. God has not moved, He is still righteous and still perfect. It is man that sinned, it is man that fell short, it is man that need to come back. It is through the blood of Christ that we can return back to God.
A. We were once alienated
A. We were once alienated
Alien is not a science fiction word, it is a Bible word.
Alien means Foreign; not belonging to the same country, land or government.
Alienated, means To estrange; to withdraw, as the affections; to make indifferent or averse, where love or friendship before subsisted; with from; as, to alienate the heart or affections
B. But only one offering was sufficient to reconcile the alienated
B. But only one offering was sufficient to reconcile the alienated
Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
C. The offering was enough to pay for the sin of the whole world
C. The offering was enough to pay for the sin of the whole world
My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
III. Through the Blood we are Justified v.22
III. Through the Blood we are Justified v.22
Justification means to declare righteous. When we were saved - we are not saved by our own good works or personal achievements, we were saved by the blood and being covered by it, were from the on - justified.
So a couple of things are included in that justification mentioned here.
A. Holy
A. Holy
And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
B. Unblameable
B. Unblameable
We are unblameable in the sense sin no longer has an effect on us anymore. We are no longer accountable for our sin.
For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
C. Unreprovable
C. Unreprovable
For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
God in His infinite wisdom in the offering of only begotten Son on the cross of Calvary, in one instance not only saved us, but made us able to live a holy unblameable and unreprovable life in Him and through Him.
If that be true, then why do we so often try to live life without Him, without His help, without His fellowship, without His Word. We neglect the most important relationship of our lives.
Pastor’s at times are guilty of this. Husbands often are. Parents indeed at times are - but we treat others people better than we do our most beloved. Our wives and our children. When they are the ones that are supposed to be our lives.
Only more so, with God our Father and the Son Jesus Christ. Do not neglect Him for anyone. Do not forget to spend time with the Lord and invest it Him. He wants that time with you, He is looking for you to return to him even right now.
IV. When we move away v.23
IV. When we move away v.23
Now this passage can be looked at two different ways:
We can look at it and use it to describe a the perseverance of the Saint of God, that a saved person is going to ultimately be faithful to God and continue you in his ways.
The other way we can look at it and the way we are going to study it - that a Believer’s testimony, when it is not what it should, that it will not have those things listed in verses 21-22.
I will tell you what this passage is not saying definitively. It is not saying that a person can lose their salvation.
And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
