Romans Chapter 12-16

Before we move on lets review what Paul has done
Paul
++Lays a foundation for faith
++Shares the truth
++Answers the critical questions
Some questions
++Were spoken
++Some were unspoken
The 1st truth is
++God judges the unrighteous
++His judgement is present
++His Judgment is future
Romans 1:18–19 ESV
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.
We worry too much
We pray too little
Psalm 37:1–2 ESV
1 Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers! 2 For they will soon fade like the grass and wither like the green herb.
Psalm 37:7 ESV
7 Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!
When man does their own thing
++God will let them
++God won’t hold them back
++God gave them up
Romans 1:24–27 ESV
24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. 26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.
God’s Judgement
++Is known to the just and the unjust
++Is shown to the unrighteous
++Is judged by the righteous
Romans 2:2–3 ESV
2 We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things. 3 Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God?
It is a proper thing
++For God to rightly judge
++For judgement to fall on those that practice such things
++For judgement to go both ways
Paul has shared
++What God has done through Christ
++The power of the Gospel
++The true hope for the church
++The confidence we have in Christ
Romans A Living Sacrifice to God / 12:1-8

Paul moves from a doctrinal discussion to a practical discussion

Paul lays the foundation

Romans 1-11 lays a foundation for the Christian faith.
We are saved
++By grace
++Through faith
Romans 1:16 ESV
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
His message was for everyone
++Jews and Gentiles
++Men and Women
++Every nation, tribe an tongue
We are justified
++Not by any legal standard
++Based upon a promise
++By faith in Christ alone
Through Christ
++We have access to God
++We are recipients of His grace

The importance of Israel

Israel were set apart by God

Through Israel
++God would show himself
++God would reveal his desire
++God would give his laws
++God would send his son

The significance of Moses

Was chosen by God
++Was given a message to Pharoah
++Lead the people from Egypt
++Was given the law

Israel was in bondage 400 years.

They cried for deliverance
They had a lot to be delivered from

The power of chains.

Most people will never experience bondage like this.
Chains will
++Restrict movement
++Control activity
++Lock things in
++Keep things out

Chains create an illusion of security

What happens when the chains are broken?

When liberty is realizes?
True Freedom
++Is more than the absence of chains
++Is more than a release from bondage
Many people run back to bondage. People have to be retrained to exist without the chain of restrictions.

The Giving of the Law was a necessity

Israel had
++Lost the reality of who they were
++To regain their losses identity.

Paul’s letter to the Roman had a similar mission.

He plainly defines
++The nature of sin
++Its effect on all humanity.
He declares
++The power of the cross
++The purpose of the sacrifice.
He clearly show that righteousness is not obtain through religious activity or the works of man’s hand. I is not given as a cultural right.

He makes the connection

Jesus’s sacrifice was connected to the promise
++Not to Moses
++To Abraham.
Romans 4:17 ESV
17 as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations”—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.

Through his seed all of the nations of the earth will be blessed.

Their is no distinction to those
++Who by faith
++Who put their trust in God.

How do we respond to this revelation?

How does or should this impact how we should live?

Romans 12 tells us that
++We have a new sacrifice
++It is not an animal, bird, or grain
++It is an offering of self alive unto God and dead to sin.
Romans 12:1–3 ESV
1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. 3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
