Have you ever wondered? How did things get like they are? Why is there so much “bad”? Where does all this fear and chaos we see come from? Why is there death? Wasn’t the earth perfect in the beginning? What went wrong?
- Answer: Sin.
- Sin is something God never intended to happen. It has ruined the perfect world he
made and his perfect creation.
- Romans 5:12
In the story of Genesis 3 we are going to see the first sin ever. We are going to see what ruined the world but we are also going to see what makes the world better!
Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
The Law of God (Genesis 3:3, Genesis 2:16-17)
-God gave Adam and Eve one rule- “Don’t eat of that one tree”
- God has also given us rules
- Exodus 20:3 - No other God’s - Exodus 20:12
- Exodus 20:13
- 1 John 3:15 - Exodus 20:15
-James 4:17
Let’s see how humanity responds to God’s rules
Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
Thou shalt not steal.
Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
Thou shalt not kill.
Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
The Temptation of Man (Genesis 3:1-5)
- Adam and Eve were tempted and they disobeyed.
- The Serpent tempted them to disobey and they did - He tempted her to doubt God
- Genesis 3:5
- He tempted her to think that disobeying God would be better than obeying
- Genesis 3:6
- We too are tempted to disobey God
- 1 Corinthians 10:9
- James 1:14
But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
The Consequences of Sin (Genesis 3:6-8)
- After their sin, things changed
- They had shame
- Genesis 3:7
- Genesis 3:10
- They wanted to hid from God
- Genesis 3:10
- They brought death into the world
- Romans 5:12
- Our sin also has consequences
- Romans 3:23
- John 3:20
For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
God’s mercy
- They had done wrong and deserved to die
- Genesis 2:16-17
- Let’s see the mercy of God here!
- God came looking for them even though they were hiding - Genesis 3:8-9
- God made a provision for them
- Their leaf coverings were not good enough so God made them a better
covering
- God made a promise - Genesis 3:15
- Jesus!
And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden. And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
We have all sinned and that sin carries real price, death! God is merciful, he makes a
provision for us. Jesus died and rose again for your sin and mine. Believe him, trust him, don’t hide or trust yourself.
- John 3:16-18
