Text - Hebrews 13.5-6; John 14.16
5 Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
6 So we may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?”
16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—
Title - The Lord Is My Helper
Background
Background
Why are there so many struggling, defeated, Christians when we the Lord to help us?
What does the Bible mean by these words: “The Lord is my Helper”?
What does the Bible mean by these words: “The Lord is my Helper”?
The O.T. verse quoted in Hebrews 13.6 has a different wording...
It means the Lord is “on my side”
It means the Lord is “on my side”
6 The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?
7 The Lord is for me among those who help me; Therefore I shall see my desire on those who hate me.
In ESV translation
6 The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?
7 The Lord is on my side as my helper; I shall look in triumph on those who hate me.
Paul delivered the same thought in Romans 8
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
He is not a helper who will help you achieve your earthly dreams, or get your desires
He is a helper to defend you against your enemies
It means the Lord is my Advocate
It means the Lord is my Advocate
1 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
2 And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.
grk. PARAKLETOS
He speaks in my behalf when I commit sin, so that the wrath of God is appeased on my behalf.
34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.
When a Christian commits sin, his/her relationship with God is NOT broken, only interrupted.
Repentance removes the grievance created by our sin, and restores harmony.
It means the Lord is my constant companion
It means the Lord is my constant companion
16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—
17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.
18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.
“another” Helper - it means Jesus was/is the first Helper
“another” Helper - it means the Holy Spirit is the same Helper (our Lord) in another form (Spirit)
Jesus helps us from 2 dimension
in heaven
here on earth
The Holy Spirit is Christ living in us to accompany us in our Christian journey!
19 So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God.
20 And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen.
How does the Holy Spirit “help” us?
How does the Holy Spirit “help” us?
Jesus summarized the activities of the Holy Spirit when He comes to “help” us -
He will teach you all things
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.
He will testify of the Son of God
26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.
that is, that Jesus is the Son of God
but also, of our sonship
6 This is He who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not only by water, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth.
7 For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one.
8 And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one.
9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; for this is the witness of God which He has testified of His Son.
10 He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son.
16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
He will convict sin, of righteousness and judgment
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.
8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me;
10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more;
11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
convict - to prove or show to be guilty
He will glorify Christ
14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.
15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.
3 Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.
He will give power for service
8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Example - in prayer
26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
WHAT’S THE POINT HERE?
The Holy Spirit is NOT just a “presence” -
a presence to go with you anywhere
a presence to make you feel “good”
The Holy Spirit is an ACTIVE PRESENCE
He abides in order to work in us
Why do we need to know these things? (about the Holy Spirit)
Why do we need to know these things? (about the Holy Spirit)
The Holy Spirit as Helper is NOT our ‘servant’
a ‘servant’ obeys your command
the Holy Spirit LEADS you
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
The help that the Holy Spirit gives is experienced only within the relationship that we build in Him
The Holy Spirit cannot help us beyond its mandate or purpose in our lives
we cannot expect the Holy Spirit to help us do things that are outside of God’s will
Example
education/studies - unless our education is by God’s instruction, or is connected with God’s purpose
business - same thing
The Holy Spirit will not do the work for you
He will not fight the enemy for you, while you sit and relax - you must engage the enemy yourself!
He will not reveal truth to you, while you are busy with other things - you must sit down, pray and study the Bible!
The Holy Spirit cannot help us when we live outside of the Lordship of Christ
Conclusion
Conclusion
We have the BEST HELPER available - our Lord Jesus Christ!
He helps us against our enemies
He helps us stand before the Holy God
he helps us make progress in our Christian life
When Christians who remain
defeated,
ignorant of the truth,
powerless
…it is because they fail to allow the Holy Spirit to help them!
THE RIGHT WAY - THE ONLY WAY - TO LIVE THE CHRISTIAN LIFE IS WITH THE HELP OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.
