Turn with me in your Bibles to John ch. 8.
Intro
Have you ever gotten your vehicle stuck in the mud?
I have!
One of the most memorable times was right after I proposed to Jennifer.
(Brief proposal story—failed attempt at a romantic picnic proposal)
As we were loading up the car to leave, I made a U-turn through some soft ground and got my car stuck in the mud.
I tried to gently give it gas, but the more gas I gave it, the more the tires spun and dug in deeper.
But, if I don’t give it gas, there’s no way I’m getting out of that rut!
The fact is, that without outside assistance, I wasn’t going anywhere.
I couldn’t get myself out of that hole I’d made.
In John 8, we see that this truth carries over to our spiritual lives as well.
Throughout the book of John, we repeatedly see Jesus facing the unbelieving Pharisees and religious leaders of his day.
Time and time again, he performs miracles and signs which reveal his identity, but time and time again, they refuse to believe.
John 8 shows us the desperate situation we are in.
Unless we believe in Christ, we are utterly lost.
Yet, we are held captive in bondage to sin, and unless we are set free from sin, we cannot believe.
We must believe to be saved, yet unless we’re saved, we can’t believe!
Our situation is hopeless!
We are stuck in a spiritual rut, and unless someone pulls us out, we will remain there.
Unless you believe, you will die in your sins.
(vv.
12-24)
Read John 8:12-24
We stand condemned by our sins
The danger of dying in our sins
Belief in Christ is absolutely necessary for salvation
Unless you are set free from bondage to sin, you cannot believe (vv.
25-47)
Read Jn. 8:25-47
You can’t out-work your sinfulness
The Pharisees were holier than you, yet stood condemned
Your unbelief negates all your good works
Your eyes are blinded so that you cannot believe
God has provided salvation from an outside source (vv.
48-59)
Read John 8:48-59
God himself has come down to pay the price for your salvation
Salvation is a gift which you cannot give yourself
The only thing you can do is throw yourself on God’s mercy and beg forgiveness.
