Renewing the Covenant

Wrath of God and His Covenant

Consider the times the wrath of God is revealed to humanity. There are three (3) instances that come to mind.

The reason behind the unleashing of God’s wrath on all of humanity is not a penchant desire to be retributional but as an exhaustion of His patience and grace.

1 Pet 3:19 tells us the Lord waited patiently while Noah built the ark. During this time Noah preached and spoke of the need to repent. 120 years in building the ark and telling the people.

The total depravity before the flood is an image of humanity that no longer believes and mocks God

Fast forward to the Great Day of the Lord… the propulsion to the end is a depravity unlike any before seen.

Romans 1:18–19 ESV

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.

Romans 1:21 ESV

For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.

Romans 1:28–32 ESV

And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

People worship self or creation above God

Knowing God will pass judgement they dismiss it

Rev 11:7-10

people will mock the death of the faith

They will believe to have eradicated God from the land

Just like the cross the return of Christ will see the church raised and seated with Him in His triumphant return.

The signs found in the sealing of the covenant stand as the renewal of the covenant.

The Legal Package

Genesis 6:9 ESV

These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God.

Noah is found in the Covenant Established with Abraham

The people should have lived as part of the covenant but trade their honor of God for the honor of created

Genesis 9:1 ESV

And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.

The command to be fruitful and multiply is an extension of the Covenant of works that was already in place

This was not a replacement

3. Gen 9:11

the covenant is renewed and spoken about as a long lasting covenant. Binds the original with the now spoken covenant… The Renewal this is the legal package

Standing Up the Covenant

Genesis 6:18 ESV

But I will establish my covenant with you, and you shall come into the ark, you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you.

The call to obedience

The promise to stand or renew the covenant

The Seal as the Renewal

Genesis 8:1 ESV

But God remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the livestock that were with him in the ark. And God made a wind blow over the earth, and the waters subsided.

Noah is already in the covenant but at this point it has not yet been renewed

His flesh was a seal

God will act according to His Covenant

Parallel Spirit is sent to subside the waters… it will usher in the new land

A Sign of The Times

Genesis 9:12–13 ESV

And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.

Make note how the enemy has tried to bastardize the sign

The bow is spoken about an Archer’s Bow

Warrior who fights against His enemies

Set in the the heavens as a sign (trophy)

3. Rev 11:12 The Return of the warrior is found in the clouds

More then Rainbow is the cloud on which it is set.

Honoring the Covenant

Genesis 8:20 ESV

Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and took some of every clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar.

Believed the Lord would fulfill His Covenant

Not the offering but the altar

Matthew 23:19 ESV

You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred?

God waits to establish His covenant with Noah, until He notes Noah’s heart posture… He identifies it as a sweet smelling aroma.

Promises seasons, preservation, day and night… an established order until this earth passes.

God knew a clean slate would not suffice and would need Jesus… Gives humanity the ability to live in His presence

Posture our hearts to raise an altar… Stand in the covenant, give ourselves over to the signs.

When we see the honor the creator over the creation as He shows us how He constantly renews His covenants with us.
