What is a Marriage?

In society today there are too many things taken out of what they should really stand for. So many are trying to ruin the bond of marriage that I wanted to spend a little time talking about what it really is! A soldier wrote a letter to Rev McPherson after seeing how his friends lived and asked “What is the meaning of Marriage”

Matthew 19:4-6KJV

4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, 5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? 6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
A marriage union is to represent the union between God and His people.

Hosea 2:20KJV

20 I will even betroth thee unto me in faithfulness: and thou shalt know the LORD.

1. Starting point of Marriage.

     a. Leave Father and Mother

Genesis 2:24KJV

24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
    b. He who finds a wife

Proverbs 18:22KJV

22 Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD.

c. Permanent

Matthew 19:6KJV

6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

2. Purpose of marriage.

    a. Companionship

Genesis 2:18KJV

18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

      b. Accomplishment

Genesis 2:18KJV

18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

      c. Have children

Genesis 1:28KJV

28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

Psalm 127:3-5KJV

3 Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. 4 As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. 5 Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.

      d. Provision

1 Timothy 5:8KJV

8 But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.

      e. Affection  Love is much more than what is on TV more than just feelings, Married love is commitement respect, appreciation, equality, vulnerability, respect, gentleness acceptance. For richer for poorer in sicknes in health till death do you part

Ephesians 5:22-25KJV

22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. 24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. 25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

3. Sanctity of Marriage.

     a. Honorable

     b private

Hebrews 13:4KJV

4 Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.

4. Quality of Marriage

a. Permanent

Matthew 19:6KJV

6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
1 Corinthians 7:39-40KJV

39 The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord. 40 But she is happier if she so abide, after my judgment: and I think also that I have the Spirit of God.

b. Spiritual no marriage can be spiritual if it has only one believer.

333r2 Corinthians 6:14KJV

14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

When one or the other is of another belief you have

  1. Spiritual difference
  2. Intellectual difference (One cannot understand the others feelings)
  3. educational difference (one is unable to truly know what you mean)
  4. Cultural difference (one has friends and loved ones at church the other at the bar)
  5. Social difference (problems exist when one cannot relate to the others friends)
  6. Mental difference (a marriage must be two thinking as one not to each his own)

Statistics in the church should show that marriage in the church is stronger and longer lasting however it is just as likely to end in divorce as anywhere else. This isn’t what should be!
