Text: Hebrews 2:5- 18
Hebrews 2:5–18 NLT
5 And furthermore, it is not angels who will control the future world we are talking about. 6 For in one place the Scriptures say, “What are mere mortals that you should think about them, or a son of man that you should care for him? 7 Yet for a little while you made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. 8 You gave them authority over all things.” Now when it says “all things,” it means nothing is left out. But we have not yet seen all things put under their authority. 9 What we do see is Jesus, who for a little while was given a position “a little lower than the angels”; and because he suffered death for us, he is now “crowned with glory and honor.” Yes, by God’s grace, Jesus tasted death for everyone. 10 God, for whom and through whom everything was made, chose to bring many children into glory. And it was only right that he should make Jesus, through his suffering, a perfect leader, fit to bring them into their salvation. 11 So now Jesus and the ones he makes holy have the same Father. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them his brothers and sisters. 12 For he said to God, “I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters. I will praise you among your assembled people.” 13 He also said, “I will put my trust in him,” that is, “I and the children God has given me.” 14 Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. 15 Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying. 16 We also know that the Son did not come to help angels; he came to help the descendants of Abraham. 17 Therefore, it was necessary for him to be made in every respect like us, his brothers and sisters, so that he could be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God. Then he could offer a sacrifice that would take away the sins of the people. 18 Since he himself has gone through suffering and testing, he is able to help us when we are being tested.
Introduction:

I- JESUS IS LORD OF ALL CREATION (Hebrews 2:5-8).

Hebrews 2:5–8 NLT
5 And furthermore, it is not angels who will control the future world we are talking about. 6 For in one place the Scriptures say, “What are mere mortals that you should think about them, or a son of man that you should care for him? 7 Yet for a little while you made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. 8 You gave them authority over all things.” Now when it says “all things,” it means nothing is left out. But we have not yet seen all things put under their authority.

A- All things have been put in subjection to Christ, not angels.

(HEBREWS 2:5)
Hebrews 2:5 NLT
5 And furthermore, it is not angels who will control the future world we are talking about.
1- The world to come has been put under subjection to Him.
a. When Jesus returns, He will return in glory (Rev. 19: 11-16)
Revelation 19:11–16 NLT
11 Then I saw heaven opened, and a white horse was standing there. Its rider was named Faithful and True, for he judges fairly and wages a righteous war. 12 His eyes were like flames of fire, and on his head were many crowns. A name was written on him that no one understood except himself. 13 He wore a robe dipped in blood, and his title was the Word of God. 14 The armies of heaven, dressed in the finest of pure white linen, followed him on white horses. 15 From his mouth came a sharp sword to strike down the nations. He will rule them with an iron rod. He will release the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty, like juice flowing from a winepress. 16 On his robe at his thigh was written this title: King of all kings and Lord of all lords.
(1) There is nothing that has not been placed under subjection to Him.

B- All of humanity is under His Lordship.

(Hebrews 2:6-8)
Hebrews 2:6–8 NLT
6 For in one place the Scriptures say, “What are mere mortals that you should think about them, or a son of man that you should care for him? 7 Yet for a little while you made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. 8 You gave them authority over all things.” Now when it says “all things,” it means nothing is left out. But we have not yet seen all things put under their authority.
1- All of the realm of nature has been placed under Him.
2- All of the Spirit realm is under His authority.
3- Although it does not look like it, Jesus is Lord of Lords!
a. The events of the world do not yet show that He is Lord.
(1)When we read the newspaper, it appears that Satan is in control.
(2) When we consider the heartbreaking events that come our way, it appears that Satan is in control
4- The Scriptures clearly show that He will assume His rightful place as Lord.
(Phil. 2:5-11)
Philippians 2:5–11 NLT
5 You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. 6 Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. 7 Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, 8 he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. 9 Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
a. When Jesus returns, He will assume his rightful place as Lord.
b. When we yield our lives to Christ, He demonstrates His Lordship.

II- JESUS DIED FOR US. (HEBREWS 2:9-15)

A- Jesus laid aside His place on the Throne of Heaven. (Hebrews 2:9)

Hebrews 2:9 NLT
9 What we do see is Jesus, who for a little while was given a position “a little lower than the angels”; and because he suffered death for us, he is now “crowned with glory and honor.” Yes, by God’s grace, Jesus tasted death for everyone.
1- Jesus was with the Father throughout eternity past (John 1:1).
John 1:1 NLT
1 In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2- Jesus laid aside his glory for the flesh of humanity (John 1:14).
John 1:14 NLT
14 So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.

B- Jesus laid aside his crown for the Cross. (Hebrews 2:9b-10)

Hebrews 2:9b–10 NLT
9 What we do see is Jesus, who for a little while was given a position “a little lower than the angels”; and because he suffered death for us, he is now “crowned with glory and honor.” Yes, by God’s grace, Jesus tasted death for everyone. 10 God, for whom and through whom everything was made, chose to bring many children into glory. And it was only right that he should make Jesus, through his suffering, a perfect leader, fit to bring them into their salvation.
1- Jesus came to die on the cross.
(John 3:16)
John 3:16 NLT
16 “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
(2 Corinthians 5:21)
2 Corinthians 5:21 NLT
21 For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.

C- Jesus went to the cross in order to secure a relationship with us. (Hebrews 2:11-13)

Hebrews 2:11–13 NLT
11 So now Jesus and the ones he makes holy have the same Father. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them his brothers and sisters. 12 For he said to God, “I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters. I will praise you among your assembled people.” 13 He also said, “I will put my trust in him,” that is, “I and the children God has given me.”
1- He secured a personal relationship with us.
a. Note the terms used to describe this relationship:
(1) Brethren (text)
(2) Children (Rom 8:16, 21; 1 Jn 3:9)
Romans 8:16 NLT
16 For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children.
Romans 8:21 NLT
21 the creation looks forward to the day when it will join God’s children in glorious freedom from death and decay.
1 John 3:9 NLT
9 Those who have been born into God’s family do not make a practice of sinning, because God’s life is in them. So they can’t keep on sinning, because they are children of God.
(3) Bride (Rev. 21:9)
Revelation 21:9 NLT
9 Then one of the seven angels who held the seven bowls containing the seven last plagues came and said to me, “Come with me! I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.”

D- Jesus shattered the bonds of our slavery through the power of the cross. (Hebrews 2:14-15)

Hebrews 2:14–15 NLT
14 Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. 15 Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying.
1- By nature we are in bondage to sin (John 8:34).
John 8:34 NLT
34 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin.
2- Jesus sets us free through His sacrifice on the cross (Jn. 8:36; Rom. 8:1-3)
John 8:36 NLT
36 So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.
Romans 8:1–3 NLT
1 So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. 2 And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death. 3 The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins.

III. JESUS SUFFERED AND COMFORTS THOSE WHO SUFFER (HEBREWS 2:16-18).

Hebrews 2:16–18 NLT
16 We also know that the Son did not come to help angels; he came to help the descendants of Abraham. 17 Therefore, it was necessary for him to be made in every respect like us, his brothers and sisters, so that he could be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God. Then he could offer a sacrifice that would take away the sins of the people. 18 Since he himself has gone through suffering and testing, he is able to help us when we are being tested.

A- Jesus does not help the angels the way he helps us. (Hebrews 2:16)

Hebrews 2:16 NLT
16 We also know that the Son did not come to help angels; he came to help the descendants of Abraham.
1- He does not save angels as he does us. (1 Peter 1:11)
1 Peter 1:11 NLT
11 They wondered what time or situation the Spirit of Christ within them was talking about when he told them in advance about Christ’s suffering and his great glory afterward.
2- He does not indwell angels as he does us. (Acts 1:8; Jn. 14:26-27)
Acts 1:8 NLT
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
John 14:26–27 NLT
26 But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you. 27 “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.

B- Jesus became a man that He might become our merciful High Priest. (Hebrews 2:17-18)

Hebrews 2:17–18 NLT
17 Therefore, it was necessary for him to be made in every respect like us, his brothers and sisters, so that he could be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God. Then he could offer a sacrifice that would take away the sins of the people. 18 Since he himself has gone through suffering and testing, he is able to help us when we are being tested.
1- He has become our High priest and mediator (1 Tim 2:5)
1 Timothy 2:3 NLT
3 This is good and pleases God our Savior,
2- Because He has been tempted, He can help us in our temptations.
a. He understands us. (He. 4:14-15)
Hebrews 4:14–15 NLT
14 So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. 15 This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin.
