I am sure as I discuss these, each of you think of someone in each of these groups
We
We are all shaped by our teachers and leaders.
What do we do about these leaders, within the Church.
God calls us to be without partiality in his Church.
In this Pastoral Epistle Paul tells us how to deal with these types of issues.
God
Pray
17 Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching. 18 For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain,” and, “The laborer deserves his wages.”
Elders who rule well
Elder, like an older person
Seems clear this is referring to the office of Elder.
Leaders of the church
Especially those who preach and teach
Responsibility not to be taken lightly
Pstr Dennis spoke about this responsibility this morning
Speaks of those who labor
Labor for the gospel
Work like an ox
Worth its wage
God calls us to be without partiality in his Church.
But what about when they do not rule well. Is it just single honor they get? What about when it is really bad?
19 Do not admit a charge against an elder except on the evidence of two or three witnesses. 20 As for those who persist in sin, rebuke them in the presence of all, so that the rest may stand in fear.
Again, this passage discusses what to do.
We read about church discipline in Matthew 18
We read about a rebuke in Galatians 2
Now we have further clarification in this passage
High standard to the charge
Multiple witnesses
It is important to safeguard those who are innocent
Protect against malicious intent
Why? People can ruin a leader with a false charge or a misunderstanding
Like in the Matthew passage, they are to be confronted
If there are witnesses and yet they persist
Rebuke in the presence of all
All elders, all the church
They rest may stand in fear
To avoid sin
To keep from idolatry
Christian purity
Our issue
Galatians
God calls us to be without partiality in his Church.
21 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of the elect angels I charge you to keep these rules without prejudging, doing nothing from partiality. 22 Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, nor take part in the sins of others; keep yourself pure.
Several charges in this book for Timothy, Pastors, and the church.
Do these things without partiality
First lead without the partiality
Dont treat a friend differently
Make this judgement the same
When we look to other issues we shouldnt say, “He could never”
Dont make it our church, but God’s church
(Refering to this section or the whole book)
Rule/lead/teach without partiality
Nothing should sway our judgment
23 (No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.)
Seems a bit random, but gives us insight into timothy
Could be refering to the purifying aspect of the wine.
Could also be refering to the fact of not needing to be perfect or avoid all things anyone may find objectionable.
24 The sins of some people are conspicuous, going before them to judgment, but the sins of others appear later. 25 So also good works are conspicuous, and even those that are not cannot remain hidden.
Some sins reveal themselves quickly, others not
c
We ought not say, it could not be them
Serial killers
Many that steal from the church
Listen to the evidence
Same with good works.
You
Build up those around you. Build up the good leaders and teachers and prepare upcoming.
