Imparting Grace To Others:
Part One: Teaching Others about the Grace of God
Romans 5:1-2
A fundamental misunderstanding of grace is at the forefront of religious controversy today. Some live as if grace is a license (Romans 6:1-2), betraying the very reason for grace. Some live without a daily appeal and credit to God’s grace, and effectively ignore it by resting on their works to save them (Galatians 2:21).
We also find so many statements from the Apostles in their letters that are centered around giving grace to others. Paul wrote “grace to you” (Romans 1:7, Philemon 3), and commended the Ephesians elders “to the word of His grace” (Acts 20:32). We do a great disservice to the idea of grace if we do not consider the way the Apostles discussed it. So, the question is this: How do we go about imparting grace to others? In the course of these lessons, we can learn that grace is given through 1) Teaching others about God’s Grace, 2) Teaching others how to access God’s Grace, and 3) Living a Grace-Centered Life.
To “give” grace, we need to first be able to communicate the nature of God’s grace, for that is the source of every “grace-full” action. We do this by communicating that His grace is UNIVERSAL, CONVICTS US, and TEACHES US.
I. God’s Grace is Universal.
A. God had always intended for grace to be bestowed.
1. Genesis 3:15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel."
2. God’s plan of mercy and grace was put into action at this moment, but had already been conceived.
3. 2 Timothy 1:9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,
From before the beginning, God had grace in mind, because this is part and parcel of who He is.
5. John 1:14-16 - No lack in God’s grace - since Jesus is in the “express image” of the Father, He is FULL of grace as much as any person of the Godhead.
B. This grace was to be given to all mankind.
NOT to be reserved and separated for only one people.
Romans 1:5,16 “to ALL NATIONS” “EVERYONE who believes”
Even today, many misunderstand this, and claim that God’s grace is only for those who are saved.
We know that grace has only been IMPARTED upon those who are saved, we must contend that grace is freely available to everyone who would desire it.
5. Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
II. God’s Grace Convicts.
A. For God to give us grace, our sin had to be revealed.
1. Romans 7:7-8; Galatians 3:19; 1 John 3:4; The way that God has revealed Man’s sin is through the Law of Moses.
2. Romans 1:17; 6:23; 3:23; Beyond the Law of Moses, the Gospel reveals God’s righteousness, and therefore OUR unrighteousness.
3. This CONVICTS us of sin. Before we even begin to approach God for mercy, we must know our spiritual poverty. We cannot be lax in teaching this to others.
4. Matthew 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
B. Grace must be the catalyst for our change.
Ezekiel 11:19-20 - God intends to change our hearts.
If we are not changing based upon God’s grace, we are not gaining the hearts He wants us to have.
3. Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus made me free from the law of sin and of death.
4. Being freed from sin means that we are to move BEYOND sin.
C. Never resist God’s grace in its conviction.
Galatians 2:21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.
2. 1 Thess. 5:19 Quench not the Spirit;
3. When we work hard to avoid offending someone with the Truth, or make it such that they don’t hear the ENTIRE Truth, we are limiting the outreach of God’s grace. May it never be so!
III. God’s Grace Teaches.
Its appearance to everyone teaches us (Titus 2:11).
1. It has appeared to ALL - a revelation, NOT a mystery
B. Its doctrine is Godly living (Titus 2:12).
Grace teaches us to DENY ungodliness and worldly lusts.
2. Grace teaches us to LIVE seriously, upright, and Godly.
C. Its focus is salvation (Titus 2:13-14).
1. Eternally (by looking to when Jesus comes), AND presently (redemption and purification).
