Genesis 1:1–3 NKJV
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. 3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.

The Spirit of the Lord - The invisible spirit with visible works.
We need the Spirit of God in our mouth to control our words, in our eyes and ears to control what comes into our minds, in our hands and feed to control our actions and to do works for God. The Holy Spirit

"Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us." 1 John 3:24 ESV
"By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit." 1 John 4:13 ESV
We all want to grow in the Spirit - but the only one who can grow us in the Spirit is the Spirit! In a short sermon, you can’t get into the depths of knowing the Spirit. Consider this a primer for your own spiritual journey to grow in your knowledge and strength of the Holy Spirit.
There are three that bear record in heaven: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. (The terms “Holy Spirit” and “Holy Ghost” are interchangeable)
Up until Jesus walked on this earth, man could not see God. God is a spirit and for a sinful man to see God in all of His holiness, would kill a mortal man. But when Jesus came here to earth, we could see Jesus. When we saw Him, we saw God. He was a manifestation of God - what was not seen was made seen through Jesus. But Jesus said, “It is important for Me to go away.” The disciples watched gravity turn loose of Jesus as He ascended into the clouds. They didn’t want Him to go because they could no longer see God.
Study the Gospel of John, chapters 14 and 16. This is where Jesus taught on the topic of the Holy Spirit. In this place, Jesus let the disciples know that when He left, God would send them “another Comforter.” When we go through the hardest things in life, yet with comfort within us, that is the Spirit working within us!
The Holy Spirit is the part of God that is unseen - Jesus was seen, but the Holy Spirit is not seen. Jesus was Emmanuel - God with us - the Holy Spirit is God in us. Jesus promised that this presence in us would teach us - the things of God can be impossible for man to understand, but the Spirit enables us to learn about these Godly things.
If you look at John on the island of Patmos, he was “in the Spirit on the Lord’s day.” The reason he was able to be in the Spirit was because the Spirit was in him already. The Spirit was showing him things and teaching him things he never knew before. When you open your Bible at home, realizing that the Bible is God’s holy Word and you ask the Spirit to teach you, He will do it! He brings the teachings of Jesus to our remembrance, too. You can’t remember every sermon you ever heard, but you will have the knowledge of that teaching within you. God is only limited by what we put in our minds and hearts - He will bring remembrance of the words that we have allowed to enter into us. In very special circumstances like John’s where he received a vision, He can show us new things, but the primary mechanism for getting God’s vision within you is to read it yourself and hear it your self.
“Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.” ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭12:4-11‬ ‭ESV‬‬
Sometimes the Spirit gets misrepresented in churches… most of the time, it’s not the enemy planting people in churches to crease confusion. It’s most often people with good intentions trying to stir up the Spirit within themselves rather than letting God have His way. Don’t shy away from the work of the Spirit because it is still very willing and able to work through us. The more we yield ourselves to God, the more He can use us through these gifts of the Spirit.
We also have a spirit. We are body and spirit with the body being the seen part and the spirit being the part that is not seen. The way we see the Spirit is through your words and actions. Your body is nothing more than a vehicle that your spirit drives.
“The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,” ‭‭Romans‬ ‭8:16‬ ‭ESV‬‬
Many times, when people begin to think about movement of the Spirit, they want.to go straight to Acts 2. But the work of the Spirit did not begin at that time, it has always been at work in the human race. Here’s a few pieces of proof:
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭1:1-2‬ ‭ESV‬‬
“So Moses went out and told the people the words of the Lord. And he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people and placed them around the tent. Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and took some of the Spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders. And as soon as the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied. But they did not continue doing it.” ‭‭Numbers‬ ‭11:24-25‬ ‭ESV‬‬
“Then Samson went down with his father and mother to Timnah, and they came to the vineyards of Timnah. And behold, a young lion came toward him roaring. Then the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon him, and although he had nothing in his hand, he tore the lion in pieces as one tears a young goat. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done.” ‭‭Judges‬ ‭14:5-6‬ ‭ESV‬‬
“And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the Lord said, "Arise, anoint him, for this is he." Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.” ‭‭1 Samuel‬ ‭16:12-13‬ ‭ESV‬‬
The Spirit was put “on” people in the Old Testament - specific people for a specific purpose. But, it is true that it was different after the event in Acts. At that point, the Spirit was not use put on someone, it was put within them and acts of the Spirit could happen on a regular basis - many signs and wonders. When Peter healed the lame man, he told him “Silver and gold have I none, but what I have I give freely…” He gave what he had which was the Spirit.
"You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him." Romans 8:9 ESV
"Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you?" 1 Corinthians 3:16 ESV
The Holy Ghost has never taken a vacation, it does not get tired. The people who have the Spirit of Christ and seek to be filled will still be filled. The Spirit gives the people who receive it power. Peter had denied Jesus, but then after he was filled with the Spirit, he proclaimed HIs name proudly because he was given power by the Holy Spirit. Jesus promised that they would be “filled with power from on high.” Why do we not get filled with the Spirit more often? Maybe we don’t have enough patience. Have you ever tried to fill a cup that is moving? We need to abide and tarry a little bit.
"Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, 'Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'"" John 7:38 ESV
We need the Spirit of God in our mouth to control our words, in our eyes and ears to control what comes into our minds, in our hands and feed to control our actions and do worlds for God.
Things that symbolize the Spirit throughout the Bible:
The wind - a force that animates living things from trees swaying in the wind to the movement of animals and people through the gift of life, the very air we breathe.
Fire - the fire of the Holy Ghost purifies us, burning off the unnecessary things. Sometimes it comes as a fiery word from our mouth, but often it’s a refining fire within us.
Yield your spirit to the Holy Spirit, be filled with it and take advantage of the comfort, the power that God makes available to us. Things make more sense to us when we have the Spirit.
“"I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.” ‭‭John‬ ‭16:12-13‬ ‭ESV‬‬
Don’t be like the church in Acts 19 who had no knowledge of the Holy Ghost. The most important source of power to the early church was the Spirit. Would you build a beautiful new house and fill it with nice lights and modern appliances and then not hook up to electricity? What a difference would it make once you hooked the house up to power? When we get ourselves and our church hooked up to God’s Spirit, we will be able to see clearly!
