Deuteronomy 4:30 ESV
When you are in tribulation, and all these things come upon you in the latter days, you will return to the Lord your God and obey his voice.
Deuteronomy 1 ESV
These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness, in the Arabah opposite Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab. It is eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-barnea. In the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses spoke to the people of Israel according to all that the Lord had given him in commandment to them, after he had defeated Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth and in Edrei. Beyond the Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses undertook to explain this law, saying, “The Lord our God said to us in Horeb, ‘You have stayed long enough at this mountain. Turn and take your journey, and go to the hill country of the Amorites and to all their neighbors in the Arabah, in the hill country and in the lowland and in the Negeb and by the seacoast, the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates. See, I have set the land before you. Go in and take possession of the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give to them and to their offspring after them.’ “At that time I said to you, ‘I am not able to bear you by myself. The Lord your God has multiplied you, and behold, you are today as numerous as the stars of heaven. May the Lord, the God of your fathers, make you a thousand times as many as you are and bless you, as he has promised you! How can I bear by myself the weight and burden of you and your strife? Choose for your tribes wise, understanding, and experienced men, and I will appoint them as your heads.’ And you answered me, ‘The thing that you have spoken is good for us to do.’ So I took the heads of your tribes, wise and experienced men, and set them as heads over you, commanders of thousands, commanders of hundreds, commanders of fifties, commanders of tens, and officers, throughout your tribes. And I charged your judges at that time, ‘Hear the cases between your brothers, and judge righteously between a man and his brother or the alien who is with him. You shall not be partial in judgment. You shall hear the small and the great alike. You shall not be intimidated by anyone, for the judgment is God’s. And the case that is too hard for you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it.’ And I commanded you at that time all the things that you should do. “Then we set out from Horeb and went through all that great and terrifying wilderness that you saw, on the way to the hill country of the Amorites, as the Lord our God commanded us. And we came to Kadesh-barnea. And I said to you, ‘You have come to the hill country of the Amorites, which the Lord our God is giving us. See, the Lord your God has set the land before you. Go up, take possession, as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has told you. Do not fear or be dismayed.’ Then all of you came near me and said, ‘Let us send men before us, that they may explore the land for us and bring us word again of the way by which we must go up and the cities into which we shall come.’ The thing seemed good to me, and I took twelve men from you, one man from each tribe. And they turned and went up into the hill country, and came to the Valley of Eshcol and spied it out. And they took in their hands some of the fruit of the land and brought it down to us, and brought us word again and said, ‘It is a good land that the Lord our God is giving us.’ “Yet you would not go up, but rebelled against the command of the Lord your God. And you murmured in your tents and said, ‘Because the Lord hated us he has brought us out of the land of Egypt, to give us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us. Where are we going up? Our brothers have made our hearts melt, saying, “The people are greater and taller than we. The cities are great and fortified up to heaven. And besides, we have seen the sons of the Anakim there.” ’ Then I said to you, ‘Do not be in dread or afraid of them. The Lord your God who goes before you will himself fight for you, just as he did for you in Egypt before your eyes, and in the wilderness, where you have seen how the Lord your God carried you, as a man carries his son, all the way that you went until you came to this place.’ Yet in spite of this word you did not believe the Lord your God, who went before you in the way to seek you out a place to pitch your tents, in fire by night and in the cloud by day, to show you by what way you should go. “And the Lord heard your words and was angered, and he swore, ‘Not one of these men of this evil generation shall see the good land that I swore to give to your fathers, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh. He shall see it, and to him and to his children I will give the land on which he has trodden, because he has wholly followed the Lord!’ Even with me the Lord was angry on your account and said, ‘You also shall not go in there. Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before you, he shall enter. Encourage him, for he shall cause Israel to inherit it. And as for your little ones, who you said would become a prey, and your children, who today have no knowledge of good or evil, they shall go in there. And to them I will give it, and they shall possess it. But as for you, turn, and journey into the wilderness in the direction of the Red Sea.’ “Then you answered me, ‘We have sinned against the Lord. We ourselves will go up and fight, just as the Lord our God commanded us.’ And every one of you fastened on his weapons of war and thought it easy to go up into the hill country. And the Lord said to me, ‘Say to them, Do not go up or fight, for I am not in your midst, lest you be defeated before your enemies.’ So I spoke to you, and you would not listen; but you rebelled against the command of the Lord and presumptuously went up into the hill country. Then the Amorites who lived in that hill country came out against you and chased you as bees do and beat you down in Seir as far as Hormah. And you returned and wept before the Lord, but the Lord did not listen to your voice or give ear to you. So you remained at Kadesh many days, the days that you remained there.
Deuteronomy - Precept Study, Week #1, chapter 1:
observations:
40th year - Moses speaks to the people on the 1st day of the 11th month.
they had already defeated Sihon - king of the Amorites who lived in Hesbon and Og king of Bashan who lived in Ashtaroth.
they’re across the Jordan in the land of Moab - Moses expounds the Law.
Moses recalls for them the Lord’s meeting with all Israel at Horeb telling them to go and possess the land which He had promised to give to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and their descendants.
Moses told them he couldn’t bear them alone and they needed to select wise, discerning and experienced leaders among them to help lead. He then charged them as judges with instructions to not show partiality.
So, they then set out from Horeb through the wilderness to the hill country of the Amorites.
The Lord said go possess the land, the people approached Moses to send out spies to bring back news about the land and the cities. The spies went into the hill country and to the valley of Eshcol - root means ‘bunch’. See Numbers 13:1-29 to get further details on the spies route which goes along the Jordan, the Negeb, the hill country and by the sea. they took 40 days.
The spies brought back a report of the good fruit, good land but the people refused to go due to the fear of the people of the land - specifically the Amorites. They told the people the people of the land were bigger, taller and the cities were large and fortified to heaven; besides they say the Anakim there.
Moses had told them not to fear - God will go before you and fight on your behalf as He did in Egypt. But they didn’t trust in the Lord.
The Lord heard the sound of their words and was angry with them and took an oath that none of the men of that evil generation would see the good land He had promised to their fathers, except for Caleb and Joshua (they said they should go - the Lord would fight for them). God said He would give it to their children.
The people then rebelled and tried to go into the land without the Lord and Moses and were defeated by the Amorites. So, they remained in Kadesh many days.
- it tells us that these are the words of the covenant that the Lord commanded Moses to make with the sons of Israel, besides the covenant He made with them at Horeb.
Deu 31:1-9 - So, Moses spoke these words...he’s 120 years old, the Lord told him he would not cross the Jordan but God would cross ahead of them and Joshua would cross with them. God will deliver the nations to them just as He did Og & Sihon. They were to be strong and not fear. Moses wrote this law and gave it to the priests and elders. Deu. 31:24-26, ...when Moses finished writing the words of this law in a book that he commanded the Levites to take the book of the law and place it beside the ark that it may remain there as a witness against them.
(pg 3.) Deu. 34:1-8 - note where they mourn Moses versus where they were in 1:5, Moses went up on Mt. Nebo - the top of Pisgah - he died there after the Lord showed him the land. The Lord buried Moses in the valley in the land of Moab opposite Beth-peor but no one knows where. So they mourned Moses in the plain of Moab for 30 days (they were across the Jodan in Moab).
2 Kings 14:6 - ...according to the book of the law of Moses, as the Lord commanded…

Matt. 19:1-8 - note who affirms what Moses wrote; the Pharisees were testing Jesus about the law which Moses wrote concerning divorce. Jesus quotes from Genesis about how it was originally setup for man and wife by God.

2.Look up reference DEU 29:1 for Moses authorship

3 . Num. 36:13 - compare with Deu.1… these are the commandments and the rules that the Lord commanded through Moses to the people of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.
4 . Num.14:26-40 - note to who Moses is speaking and why. Moses was speaking to the people of Israel regarding they’re grumbling about going in to possess the land after the spies returned and what God said he would do...not allowing any of that generation to go into the land but only their children.
Precept day 2:
#1. Observation worksheets 1&2 marking, time, locations, command, commandment, Lord - angry, heart and note what is learned about God.
#2. Meditate on your observations, what is that application for my life? What are three specific actions?
don’t let fear inhibit my obedience to what the Lord has told me to do - specifically: faithfully witness to others
stand up for what is right
love kindness
walk in humility - don’t act as if what I have is because of my ability or intelligence, God gave all my ability, all my opportunities and overlooked all my failures., Be gracious to others!
Precept day 3:
main events: Chapter 1 (Moses recounts Israel’s history)
defeated two kings - Sihon (Amorite) & Og (Bashan).
Moses expounds the law & command to go and possess the promise land.
Moses tells them he needs the help of judges and appoints men to help lead - wise & discerning, experienced.
trek from Mt. Horeb to Kadesh-barnea.
12 spies sent out to spy the land and report - bring back fruit, it’s a good land, people are big and cites are fortified, bad report.
people grumble, God is angry with them and he tells them that generation will not go into the land except Caleb & Joshua.
the people disobey and try to go into the land themselves without God’s help and are defeated.
main events: Chapter 2 (The wanderings)
wanderings begin through the wilderness by way of the Red Sea and mount Seir.
the Lord tells them they will pass through the territory of their brothers the sons of Esau - do not provoke them, pay for food and water, you will not possess any of their land, it has been given to Esau.
they then passed through the land of Moab, the Lord told them not to harass Moab nor provoke them, He would not give them any of their land it was give by the Lord to the sons of Lot.
it took them 38 years to go from Kadesh-barnea to the brook Zered, all the men of war had perished.
They came to the border of Ar - they were not to harass the sons of Ammon because he Lord had given that land to the sons of Lot. The Lord had fought for Esau and Lot for their territories.
They were told to arise and pass through the valley of Arnon for the Lord had given the king of Hesbon - Sihon into their hands. Moses sent a message of peace to Sihon asking to pass through but the king was not willing because the Lord had hardened his heart.
So they captured all the cities of Sihon, destroyed all the men, women and children - left no survivors, they only took the animals and spoil of the cities.
main events: Chapter 3 (the conquest of the land east of the Jordan)
conquest of Og, king of Bashan - the battle at Edrei. The defeated OG and smote all his cities (60), all the region of Argob. They destroyed all the men, women and children in every city. They only kept the animals, and spoil of the cities.
took all the land beyond the Jordan from the valley of Arnon to mount Hermon, all the cites of the plateau and all Gilead, Bashan as far as Salecah and Endrei.
distribution of the land beyond the Jordan was as follows: from Aroer and half the hill country of Gilead Moses gave it to the Reubenites and the Gadites. The rest of Gilead he gave to half the tribe of Manasseh (Jair - son of). To Machir he gave Gilead.
after dividing up the land east of the Jordan Moses commanded the Gadites, Reubenites and Manassehites to cross the Jodan with their brothers to possess the promise land and afterwards they could return.
Moses asked the Lord to cross over to see the land but the Lord refused and had him go yo the top of Pisgah and He would show him the land.
The Lord told Moses to charge Joshua to lead the people to give them the inheritance - the land.
Precept day 4:
Observe and Mark chapter 4 - covenant and any pronouns, observe, keep (watch, heed), do (perform).
List what we are to watch and be aware of and how it applies today:

vs. 15-18 watch yourselves carefully, so that you do not act corruptly and make a graven image for yourselves in any form of any figure, the likeness of male or female, the likeness of any animal that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged bird in the sky, the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the water below the earth. Any form or image is not to be used for worship not matter what form it may be of - this would include statues, this might also include the worship of our bodies or maybe even money. Anything that can become our god.

vs. 19 And beware not to lift up your eyes to heaven and see the sun and the moon and the stars, all the hosts of heaven, and be drawn away and worship them and serve them, those which the Lord your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven. This reminds me of horoscopes or Taro cards which some people pay attention to.

vs. 23 So watch yourselves, that you do not forget the covenant of the Lord your God which He made with you, and make for yourselves a graven image in the form of anything against which the Lord you God has commanded you.

How chapter 4 relates to chapters 1-3, what Moses is doing - he reminded the Israelites of what took place after the Exodus until now when they find themselves about to cross the Jordan. Their fathers had seen what God had done and yet they didn’t trust in Him and rebelled which not only kept them from going into the land but brought about their death in the wilderness because of their disobedience. So now Moses is telling them to LISTEN to the statutes and commandments and the judgments he was telling them to perform - pay attention, do them, they are wisdom and your understanding. This is the covenant the Lord declared to them on the mountain, so watch yourselves carefully and make no other gods...there is no God like yours! He’s telling them if they don’t listen and do as instructed then the Lord will be against them and they will be scattered and punished. So, keep them and do them and be blessed and it will go well with you.
