Matthew 28:18–20 (NASB95)
18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Jesus made the Great Commission His final Message before His ascension.
There is only ONE Command in the Great Commission.
Baptizing is the way of initiating the path of Discipleship. It’s the first step of obedience after faith.
Discipleship is the method of maturing people to be like Jesus. Discipleship is reflected in but not limited to these activities:
Disciple occurs 269 times in the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles.
Private and Church worship.
Serving one another.
Studying the Word.
15 Work hard so you can present yourself to God and receive his approval. Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth.
Sharing the Gospel.
b. To be effective, you need to be under the authority and with the presence of Jesus through the Holy Spirit.
1. You need to trust in the power the Gospel.
16 For we were not making up clever stories when we told you about the powerful coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. We saw his majestic splendor with our own eyes
21 Again he said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.” 22 Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
2. Remember the Gospel is a Supernatural Reality.
13 which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words. 14 But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.
a. What is a natural person? Someone prioritizing worldly ways over desiring God.
18 But God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who suppress the truth by their wickedness. 19 They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them.
b. The Holy Spirit works alongside you as you share the gospel.
In June 26, 2000, ABC aired a documentary called The Search for Jesus. The network’s leading news anchor, Peter Jennings, interviewed liberal and conservative scholars of early Christianity about what we can know historically concerning Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. The series ended with a striking statement by New Testament scholar Paula Fredriksen, who is not a Christian herself.
Commenting on the post-Resurrection appearances of Jesus, Fredriksen said,
I know in their own terms what they saw was the raised Jesus. That’s what they say, and then all the historic evidence we have afterwards attest to their conviction that that’s what they saw. I’m not saying that they really did see the raised Jesus. I wasn’t there. I don’t know what they saw. But I do know that as a historian that they must have seen something.
She’s admitting, in other words, that the best available historical evidence confirms that followers of Jesus like Mary Magdalene, his brother James, Peter and his other disciples, and even an enemy (Paul) were absolutely convinced that the crucified man Jesus appeared to them alive, raised from the dead.
Fredriksen is not alone in supposing that these followers must have seen something. Virtually every Bible scholar across the Western world, regardless of religious background, agrees that Jesus’ earliest followers believed he appeared to them alive.
1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
6 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.
c. You must share out of love for Christ and sharing His concern for a lost world.
1. The message of repentance from sin and faith in Christ will rarely be popular.
Henry Ford:
“If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.”
2. The Great Commission comes because the Greatest need of anyone apart from Christ is to hear the Gospel.
12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
15 How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news of good things!” 16 However, they did not all heed the good news; for Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?” 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
IF SOMEONE ASKED YOU WHAT IT MEANS TO BELIEVE THE GOSPEL, HOW WOULD YOU ANSWER?
