1 Chronicles 16 – Glory in His Holy Name
I. The Setting of “this psalm of thanks to the Lord” 1 Chronicles 16:7
a. Bringing the Presence of God back to Israel 2 Chronicles 13:1-3a
b. Israel coming back to the presence of God 2 Chronicles 13:3b
c. The Holiness of the presence of God 2 Chronicles 13:9-10
d. The pomp and circumstance 2 Chronicles 15:1-16:6
II. Remember what He had done 1 Chronicles 16:8-12
a. Thanksgiving “Give thanks…wonderful acts”
i. Thanksgiving is the beginning of worship
ii. Thanksgiving begins with memory
iii. Thanksgiving without memory is futile, empty, mere fealty
iv. Worship without knowledge is mere words, powerless
v. What testimony do you have to spark your memory and fuel your worship
b. Petition “call on His name…seek His face always”
i. Petition begins with seeking relationship Hebrews 11:6
ii. And then proceeds to accepting sustenance Matthew 6:33
c. Proclamation “make known…tell of”
i. If your heart is thankful – your walk must be fruitful”
ii. If your heart sings – your mouth must tell 2 Corinthians 5:20-21
d. Glory in His Holy Name
i. Glory – An imperative summons to assign full weight to His person
ii. Name - The essence of His character (He did – so – He is – so – He will)
iii. Holy – Essential apartness, separate from Hebrews 4:14-16
III. Remember what He has promised 1 Chronicles 16:15-17
a. He remembers His covenant forever
It is forever before His face – He is not bound by His promises and His covenants, because His promises and His covenants exude from His Holy nature. He is bound by His nature, for He cannot be but who He is. – Again - Hebrews 4:14-16
b. His Covenant with Abraham
i. Unconditional – based only on God’s promise Genesis 15:1-21
ii. Immutable – tied intricately to God’s Word Genesis 22:15-18
c. Don’t be like them who fell in the wilderness Hebrews 3:7-19
d. But… Hebrews 11:1,6
IV. Remember who He is 1 Chronicles 16:25-29
a. He is to be feared above all gods verse 25, Proverbs 1:7
b. He alone is God verse 26
c. All that is good finds its essential substance in Him verse 27, Hebrews 8:1-6
d. Acknowledge His nature in heart, mind and soul verse 28
e. Acknowledge His nature in spirit and in truth verse 29, John 4:23-24
V. Remember that He is the only source of salvation 1 Chronicles 16:34-35
a. Give thanks to the Lord
Thanksgiving is the end of worship. We begin by thanking Him for His acts, and end by thanking Him for who He is
b. Cry out
Understanding is the end of Thanksgiving, Understanding that He alone is the source of our salvation.
