Romans 6:1–14 NLT
1 Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of his wonderful grace? 2 Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it? 3 Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death? 4 For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives. 5 Since we have been united with him in his death, we will also be raised to life as he was. 6 We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. 7 For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin. 8 And since we died with Christ, we know we will also live with him. 9 We are sure of this because Christ was raised from the dead, and he will never die again. Death no longer has any power over him. 10 When he died, he died once to break the power of sin. But now that he lives, he lives for the glory of God. 11 So you also should consider yourselves to be dead to the power of sin and alive to God through Christ Jesus. 12 Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to sinful desires. 13 Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God. 14 Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, you live under the freedom of God’s grace.
Today we can say that we have come to the spiritual funeral of these being baptized.
We are all born unto a sin nature
Sin always brings bondage—
bondage—to the body,
bondage—to the mind,
bondage—to the soul
bondage—and to the will.
Sin enslaves us to its problems and practices.
John 8:34 (NLT)
34 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin.
Jesus Christ came to set us free from this slavery!

Salvation from Sin

1–5
1. Reasoning
v. 1. raises the question; Should we continue in sin so we may have more of God’s grace?
2 Timothy 2:19 NLT
19 But God’s truth stands firm like a foundation stone with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and “All who belong to the Lord must turn away from evil.”
We should now walk in Newness of life in Jesus Christ—
2 Corinthians 5:17 NLT
17 This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!
Golden Nuggets—Volume 19 God’s “All Things”

He has a new life. No longer does he live upon the low level of sin; he lives the higher life.

2. He has a new loyalty. No longer is he loyal to evil, but to the higher things.

3. He has a new love. Once he loved the things of Satan and hated the things of God, but now he loves the things of God and hates the things of Satan.

More Perfect Illustrations: For Every Topic and Occasion Testimony: God Transforms Dad’s Life

Author, pastor, and onetime atheist Lee Strobel says in one sermon:

How can I tell you the difference God has made in my life? My daughter Allison was 5 years old when I became a follower of Jesus, and all she had known in those 5 years was a dad who was profane and angry. I remember I came home one night and kicked a hole in the living-room wall just out of anger with life. I am ashamed to think of the times Allison hid in her room to get away from me.

Five months after I gave my life to Jesus Christ, that little girl went to my wife and said, “Mommy, I want God to do for me what he’s done for Daddy.” At age 5! What was she saying? She’d never studied the archaeological evidence [regarding the truth of the Bible]. All she knew was her dad used to be this way: hard to live with. But more and more her dad is becoming different. And if that is what God does to people, then sign her up. At age 5 she gave her life to Jesus.

God changed my family. He changed my world. He changed my eternity.

2. Rejection
v. 2. Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it?
Of Course we are to reject the sinful nature of our lives
When in Christ, we no longer live in sin but have crucified the flesh, the affections and lust—
Galatians 5:24 NLT
24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there.
Galatians 2:20 NLT
20 My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Ga 5:17 | The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature
3. Relations
—v. 3. Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death?
Those in Christ must share in His death. Jesus spoke of self-denial—Luke 9:23
Luke 9:23 NLT
23 Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me.
A Christian life is surrendered to God, not patterned after this world
Romans 12:1–2 NLT
1 And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. 2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

4. Results
—vv. 4–5.
4 For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.
5 Since we have been united with him in his death, we will also be raised to life as he was.
Yes we are buried with the Lord in baptism, and raised with Him.
Baptism is symbolic of inner cleansing, burying our sin, then rising to walk in newness of life in the Spirit
Galatians 5:16 NLT
16 So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.
We are to walk by faith, not by sight
2 Corinthians 5:7 NLT
7 For we live by believing and not by seeing.
We are to walk like Peter did on the water, not after he seen the waves.

Separation from Sin

—vv. 6–11
1. Denial
—v. 6. We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin
The “old man” is crucified. By birth, we were the children of Satan
John 8:44 NLT
44 For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.
In Christ we are the children of God
John 1:12 NLT
12 But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.
2. Death
—v. 7.  For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin
Dead to sin, we are freed; no longer a servant of sin
John 8:34 NLT
34 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin.
No longer do we sin by choice and habit
John 8:32 NLT
32 And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
John 8:36 NLT
36 So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.
3. Dominion
—vv. 8–9. And since we died with Christ, we know we will also live with him. 9 We are sure of this because Christ was raised from the dead, and he will never die again. Death no longer has any power over him
Death had dominion over us
1 Corinthians 15:51–58 NLT
51 But let me reveal to you a wonderful secret. We will not all die, but we will all be transformed! 52 It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we who are living will also be transformed. 53 For our dying bodies must be transformed into bodies that will never die; our mortal bodies must be transformed into immortal bodies. 54 Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that will never die, this Scripture will be fulfilled: “Death is swallowed up in victory. 55 O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” 56 For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power. 57 But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.
but Christ conquered death for us.
John 11:25–26 NLT
25 Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. 26 Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?”
4. Design
—vv. 10–11. “He died once but now lives. He died to break the power of sin, and the life He now lives is for God. You must do the same thing! Think of yourselves as dead to the power of sin. But now you have new life because of Jesus Christ our Lord. You are living this new life for God”—NLT.

Sanctification from Sin

—vv. 12–14
1. Denounced
—v. 12. Do not let sin control the way you live;* do not give in to sinful desires
Don’t allow sin with its lusts to rule you
Daniel 1:8 NLT
8 But Daniel was determined not to defile himself by eating the food and wine given to them by the king. He asked the chief of staff for permission not to eat these unacceptable foods.
James 1:14–15 NLT
14 Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. 15 These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death.
Butler's Sermon Starters: Volume 7 A Holy Resolve (Daniel 1:8)

A new year often means resolutions. Daniel was take captive by the Babylonians and elevated to a high place of service This prompted Daniel’s high and holy resolve which gives us a great pattern for our New Year’s resolutions. Daniel had a purpose, many do not, they drift with the current trend of the day. Not Daniel. He had a holy resolve.

FIRST—THE POPULARITY OF THE PURPOSE

“But Daniel.” Daniel was a loner in that he alone made the purpose. The other men with him who were also being prepared for the king’s service did not make any purpose. If you determine to live a godly life, you will be a loner. There is a saying that an “A” student walks the halls (of school) alone. That is often true but also true is the fact that those who would live a holy life will walk alone.

SECOND—THE PERIOD OF THE PURPOSE

“Daniel.” Daniel was a teenager at best here. Some say he was even younger. You do not have to be a veteran saint to make holy vows of consecration. You do not have to be up in years before you start living for God. You can start when you are young. In fact the younger you start the fewer wasted years in your life and the fewer sin-scars upon your life.

THIRD—THE PLACE OF THE PURPOSE

“In his heart.” This meant he was sincere, not just mouthing high sounding words as many do. Daniel meant what he said. His convictions of holiness were heart convictions. He was not going along with a crowd (he was a loner), but his purpose reflected the holiness that was in his heart.

FOURTH—THE PURITY OF THE PURPOSE

“That he might not defile himself.” Daniel wanted to live a holy life. This is a great purpose. If you do not purpose to not defile yourself early in life you will corrupt your life, your body and your mind for many years. Defilement will dog you to the day of your death.

FIFTH—THE PORTION IN THE PURPOSE

“Would not defile himself with a portion.” This purpose would not dabble in sin. Daniel recognized that “just once” is a trick of the devil to get you hooked and that “just once” does not occur. Daniel would be called a fanatic but he saw the peril of the “portion.”

SIXTH—THE PROBLEMS FOR THE PURPOSE

“The prince of the eunuchs.” Daniel had two problems here.

• The food problem. “King’s meat.” A different diet meant Daniel was defying the king no less. But God is higher authority.

• The friend problem. The “prince of the eunuchs” had become friends with Daniel. Friends are often a big hindrance to dedication.

Lust brings separation from God.
2. Dedication
—v. 13. Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God
Don’t yield your body to sin, but to God.
Psalm 119:9–11 NLT
9 How can a young person stay pure? By obeying your word. 10 I have tried hard to find you— don’t let me wander from your commands. 11 I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
3. Dominion
—v. 14.Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, you live under the freedom of God’s grace.
Sin doesn’t have to control you. We are not under the law, but under God’s Grace
Romans 8:2 NLT
2 And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.
2 Corinthians 3:17 NLT
17 For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
Salvation brings freedom from sin.
Some return to the old ways of sin. We need to heed Paul’s advice
Galatians 5:1 NLT
1 So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law.
We need not be bound by any sin; there is power to overcome every temptation
1 Corinthians 10:13 NLT
13 The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.

Setup To Be Tempted

1. Jesus was baptized
Some setting here this morning are thinking that since its just symbolic why get baptized.
Many do not get baptized, believing since its only symbolic it isn't that important. But Jesus deemed it important in
Matthew 3:13–17 (NLT)
13 Then Jesus went from Galilee to the Jordan River to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to talk him out of it. “I am the one who needs to be baptized by you,” he said, “so why are you coming to me?”
15 But Jesus said, “It should be done, for we must carry out all that God requires.” So John agreed to baptize him.
Jesus said it must be done, for God requires it. If God requires it then who are we to argue against it.
Today you will be baptized
2. Jesus Led by the Spirit
Matthew 3:16–17 NLT
16 After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.”
Matthew 4:1 NLT
1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted there by the devil.
You will also be led by the Spirit
3. Jesus Tempted of the Devil
Matthew 4:1–11 NLT
1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted there by the devil. 2 For forty days and forty nights he fasted and became very hungry. 3 During that time the devil came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” 5 Then the devil took him to the holy city, Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, 6 and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off! For the Scriptures say, ‘He will order his angels to protect you. And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’ ” 7 Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the Lord your God.’” 8 Next the devil took him to the peak of a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 “I will give it all to you,” he said, “if you will kneel down and worship me.” 10 “Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him. “For the Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’” 11 Then the devil went away, and angels came and took care of Jesus.
You will also be tempted by the devil
Jesus used God’s Word to defeat the devil
We also must use God’s word to defeat the devil
Recent survey about being in God’s Word.
There was a study done on how often people get into God’ Word on average per week
1 time a week in God’s Word has a negligible or insignificant effect on our lives.
2 time a week in God’s Word has a negligible or insignificant effect on our lives.
3 time a week in God’s Word has a negligible or insignificant effect on our lives.
But when we get in God’s Word 4 times a week, it literally spikes off the chart.
1,2,3 almost flat, but when we get in God’s Word 4 times a week, it literally spikes off the chart.
