When it comes to giving, the question of ‘what’ goes hand-in-hand with the questions of ‘how’ and ‘how much’. And the answer to each of these questions changes radically when you replace the word ‘should’ with the word ‘can’ (eg. How much should I give vs. How much can I give?) This is the difference between gospel-influenced generosity and legalistic, religious giving. This is why the principle of a 10% tithe in the Bible slowly gives way to a principle of gratitude and total surrender. It is a bigger, broader, more holistic view of stewardship and generosity, where not only the wealthy can give much, but the poorest of the poor as well. Where willingness and a desire to give are more important than actual amounts. And where God’s church community thrives because people live out such generosity together.
