The Main Idea
The Main Idea
Let love be genuine (IE without hypocrisy).
Q: What does it mean to have genuine love?
A: The passage explains this. It doesn’t seem to be a list of isolated ideas, but starts with Love in verse 9, and ends with love in 13:10. It really seems to me that everything in between is a basic understanding of what a life of genuine love looks like. It’s not just let’s feel it, it’s more like let’s do it.
Abhor what is evil; Cling to what is good.
Abhor what is evil; Cling to what is good.
Seems easy enough right?
Q: How does someone do this without falling into either antinomianism or legalism?
A: It’s nuanced. The Bible allows for a sweeping freedom that really is unheard of in religions around the world.
For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself, but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean.
People sin, not objects. It gets difficult in the arts, and the purpose of some objections, but a truly righteous man will not be defiled by anything. Jesus saw things that were sinful, and never once compromised. So it’s takes wisdom to live this one out. Understand where one is weak, and otherwise strong. Confess your sins, and remember that Jesus died to save you from the sinful life you once lived.

Conclusion
Conclusion
This whole passage is about relationships between believers, their enemies, and people different from them. The challenge is to live it out. This passage is thick, and it is highly unlikely that any of us are living it out perfectly; however, in Christ we have the freedom to live right.
