We live in a world that’s longing for satisfaction. People try to satisfy themselves in all sorts of ways: some try to buy satisfaction, some try to find it in people, some look for it in a bottle or pill, some choose to just remain hopeless and miserable. People are always wanting more. It’s as if there's never enough. If there is a Bible truth I can remind you of, it would be that God can satisfy!
Proverbs 27:20
Hell and destruction are never full;
So the eyes of man are never satisfied.
Proverbs 19:23
The fear of the Lord tendeth to life:
And he that hath it shall abide satisfied;
He shall not be visited with evil.
Psalms 36:8
They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house;
And thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures.
Psalm 90:14
O satisfy us early with thy mercy;
That we may rejoice and be glad all our days.
In this story we are going to see an unsatisfied woman and the key to satisfying her soul.
Not only did Jesus satisfy her in life he also met her deepest spiritual needs.
He can do the same for you. We don’t have to leave thirsty; he can satisfy us!
In John 4 we see Jesus leaving Judæa and rather than taking the traditional route for a Jewish teacher like him, he decides to go through Samaria. Actually he “must” go through Samaria and that's all because there was a thirsting soul there and he had the remedy.
The woman's soul
Her position in society
Notice her response to Jesus’ request in verse 9: she was surprised that Jesus was having anything to do with her
Normally, a Jew of that day traveling from the southern part of Israel to the northern part of the land would not go through Samaria, but would instead take a detour.
The Samaritans were hostile people.
In 721 B.C., the Sama (the people of Israel who had rebelled against the Lord) were carried away captive.
The captors took the strongest, the most noble, and the most educated of the people; but they left the sick, the weak, the poor, and the illiterate in the land.
Not only was she Samaritan she was a woman
They we not held in the highest of esteem back then
Her lack of satisfaction
What she had never left her satisfied( John 4:13)
Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
Maybe what you have, you’re just not finding satisfaction in it?
Money
Stuff
Etc.
She even tried people to satisfy her too
She had been with 5 husbands ( John 4:18)
For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.
Each had tossed her to the side
Sin will never satisfy
It may have its thrills but no joy
Her souls situation
She was not only completely unsatisfied but a sinner (4:16-18)
He sin too left her unsatisfied
Proverbs 20:17
The Saviors solution
Jesus in his mercy dealt with this woman
If I can remind you of something Jesus deals with the worst of the worst
He touched lepers, He talked to the blind, ate with sinners & publicans
He deals with us in the same way!
Jesus who is God stepped out of heaven and came to get sinners
John 3:13
And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
Philippians 2:5
Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
God stepped down from heaven into this earth to save sinners
Mark 2:17-19
Jesus offered her total satisfaction ( John 4:13-14 )
Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
Jesus was the only solution to her issues!
He offers provision for the day
John 6:35
God takes care of his children!
He offered her true worship (John 4:22-14 )
Those who believe in Christ have the ability to worship in genuine truth!
God seeks people to worship him!
John 4:24
The proper response to who God is is worship
He offered her transformation ( 4:28 -29 )
Jesus transformed her life
She told the whole town!
4:39
She left her water pot because Christ had satisfied her
4:28
Jesus can transform your life too!
When Christ works we can leave behind the old things that used to try to satisfy us
Our similar story
We didn't deserve to have Jesus interact with us
Romans 5:8
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Jesus in his mercy came for us!
John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
We couldn't be satisfied without Jesus!
Nothing would satisfy our needs
No person,thing, or place can!
Jesus can!
Save us too!
Now we can tell people!
Bring them to Jesus!
