This Morning- teaching - Gifts of the Spirit
1 Corinthians 12:1–7 NIV
1 Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. 3 Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. 4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. 7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
“Manifestation”- Outward visible expression. Outward demonstration of power. In other words “seeing” the work of the Holy Spirit outwardly.
“Each one”- church- each one- outward visible demonstration of the Spirit’s power is given… each one… for the common good. To each one… beleiver… for the good of the rest of the body.
1 Corinthians 12:8–11 NIV
8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.
“I have this gift.... i have that gift...” No… the Holy Spirit has them.. he gives them for a season, for a moment, extended period of time… as he determines… to build up others....
1 Corinthians 12:12–31 NIV
12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14 Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many. 15 Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19 If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body. 21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” 22 On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, 24 while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, 25 so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. 26 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. 27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28 And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? 31 Now eagerly desire the greater gifts. And yet I will show you the most excellent way.
For the Body.... church of Jesus.... common good.
This is for today…i’ll show you… any church who is not active in the Gifts of the Spirit is a church that’s not reaching it’s full potential. Spirit of God wants to work, desires to work, purposes to work, through the Gifts to build up, strengthen, encourage his body.
Now… remeber Luke chapter 4, Jesus was tempted… chose not to gratify the desies of the flesh… but to walk in the spirit.
Remember how that passage ended?
Luke 4:14 NIV
14 Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.
Jesus’ ministry… laid aside his humanity… moved/worked/lived/ministered from the Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit was the source of everything he did…
John 16:7 NIV
7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
John 14:12 NIV
12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.
John 14:16 NIV
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—
Matthew 28:18–20 NIV
18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Therefore...
I will be with you to the very end of the age…
Acts 1:7–8 NIV
7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Acts 1:1–2 NIV
1 In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach 2 until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen.
“began to do....Luke
Acts- continue to do, power of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus- “for your good..”, “I will send...”, “do these things...”, “all authority…go...”
25 or so years later.. Paul is writing to the church at Corinth… writing of the Spiritual Gifts because he knows that Jesus, through the Holy Spirit, is with them and equipping them to do the work that he did. To continue the mission. To move the church forward.
1 Cor 12 is a picture of what the church should look like. What we are purposed to look like. Spirit filled believers. Not believing the spiritual gifts today are to believe that Jesus has sent us to do a mission without equipping us to complete it.
Today… good church… enjoy the Word…im fed… worship is anointed… but if we want to see revival… if we want to see manifested Holy Spirit… if we want to see the church be all it can be… we MUST desire the indwelling presence of the Spirit and his manifestation through the gifts… it’s a must.
Let’s turn to the actual gifts listed in 1 cor 12.
Some may operate with 2 or more.. some may operate with 1. Also.. any of these gifts may show up once for a particular situation and then never again. Sometimes a gift will reside permanently… goes back to verse 11… Holy Spirit determines.
Briefly explain… what each is… give an example… (Tongues, next week, baptism of the Spirit)
Wisdom- presence… mind… of the Holy Spirit. It is knowing what to do next… it shows the next step forward when we don’t know what to do. It isn’t having 20/20 hindsight… but 20/20 foresight. Protects you from mistakes, protects you from regret.
In jesus ministry, In acts… wisdom…
Matthew 11:25 NIV
25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.
Church’s have been destroyed because of the lack of this gift… pursue tongues… prophetic… etc… without wisdom… trouble.
supernatural wisdom…
Acts 6, Stephen.. first Martyr.. word tells us in verse 10.. that he spoke with “wisdom” given by the Holy Spirit… in such a way that religious and government leaders were not able to say anything back… so they made up lies… killed him. Supernatural wisdom from which he spoke intimidated and scared them.
Jesus… teaching… sermon on the mount… parables… wisdom. Not only for teaching but for decision making… Acts 16… verse 6… Paul and his companions while on the missionary journe… were kept by the Holy Spirit from ministering in Asia… human wisdom… spread the Gospel… supernatural wisdom… not there.
James… writes… if you lack wisdom… ask… desire the spiritual gifts. Some of us need the supernatural gift of wisdom. Good of the body. Family. Decisions. Finances. Jobs. Come on…
1 Corinthians 12:8 NIV
8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit,
Message of knowledge- “Word of Knowledge”. Special, supernatural knowledge for the midst of a crisis… borders on Wisdom… notice… Spirit of Wisdom… Word of Knowledge… also… borders on gift of prophecy… Lets me show you an example…
Woman at the well… Jesus… met her… struck up a conversation… “go and get your husband”… “i dont have a husband”… indeed what you’ve said is true… “you have 5 and the man you’re with now isn’t your husband.”
A word of knowledge, just like here, can disclose a person’s illness, concerns, needs. Well he was Jesus… he was operating from the power of the Holy Spirit. Human form. He received this word of Knowledge from the Spirit.
My own example… Oklahoma… man in altar… “don’t give up, God wants you to know you are where you are because of his design, don’t give up.” This man had no idea… example of someone allowing the Spirit… filled with the Spirit.. surrendered… to operate for the good of the Kingdom. Good of the Body. To lift up a fellow believer/minister.
1 Corinthians 12:9 NIV
9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit,
Faith… Gift? Why is it listed as a gift? We are justified by faith… saved by faith… so if we are believers… we already have it… here’s the point… Holy Spirit surrendered life… there’s always more. This isn’t redundant… no. This gift is reffering to a crisis situation. A valley. a storm. Saving faith- cross 2000 years ago and taking you to heaven. But what about the faith when you have cancer? What about the faith when you lose a loved one? what about faith darkest valley of your life.
Gift… of… the… Spirit.
Acts 28:3-6/ Paul shakes off the snake
Acts 3:1–7 NIV
One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon. Now a man who was lame from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!” So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them. Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong.
This Faith… comes to church expecting God to do the miraculous. God to move. Holy Spirit… Faith… Lord is going to do something great. This is the faith I pray for… for our church. our people. Not coming just… but coming with a supernatural faith that God not only desires but that he WILL move mountains. He will mend the broken. That he WILL if only we get into his presence
1 Corinthians 12:9 NIV
to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit,
Gifts of healing…
I have seen people healed. I have seen people miraculously healed. Supernaturally healed. But the gift of healing seems to be the one that is very rare for someone to have all the time. Remember… moments… build up the church. Moments of supernatural healing… Manifest presence of the Holy Spirit in his soveirgnty gives the gift of healing.
Acts 5:15–16 NIV
As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by impure spirits, and all of them were healed.
The healing wasn’t in the shadow. It wasn’t in Peter. It was in the power of the Holy Spirit… he gives the gifts.
Multiple examples of healing from Jesus… in the power of the Holy Spirit.
When you come for prayer for healing…
1 Corinthians 12:10 NIV
to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.
Miraculous powers- miracles… supernatural events that occur outside of the natural realm.
In Acts 16… cast out demonic powers. Over and over in Jesus’ ministry and in the ministry of the church.
Acts 13… Elymas… sorcerer… working to stop the proconsul from believing in Jesus. Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked directly at him, called him out and spoke that Elymas would be blinded because of his wickedness. Immediately he became blind. For a period of time…
Procunsul believed… Holy Spirit through Paul… fought against the wickedness and through the manifested gift he moved forward the church. the body of Christ.
1 Corinthians 12:10 NIV
to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.
Distinguishing between spirits… the God given ability to discern the true from the false. Recognizing the Holy Spirit from the Demonic. Or even the absence of the Holy Spirit when there are claims being made about his presence.
Perfect example of this in Acts 16. This is the chapter I use so much, love when Paul and Silas were in Prison they began to praise God and the place began to shake and the prison began to crumble.
How did they get in prison?
Acts 16:16–18 NIV
Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a female slave who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.” She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” At that moment the spirit left her.
Discernment of Spirit… she was saying the right things but Paul knew that it was from a/the wrong spirit. It is to protect the body from the false. To protect the body from strange fire. What is fake…
Closing… Church… that operates with the gifts of the spirit. Church that is full of the spirit of God. Baptized, overflowing, with the Holy Spirits power and anointing.
How? First step.... Jesus said…
Matthew 18:3 NIV
And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
I truly believe that the main reason today… people are too infatuated with their own image. What will I look like? what will people think?
We are living in a time where God’s presence is needed more than ever. We are close… we are close to the final scene. What’s important?
Do we desire the spiritual gifts? Or are we fine where we are?
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst.... for they will be filled”
Too many are not hungry and thirsty for the things of God because we are full on the trash food from the world. Im praying… manifestation of the Holy Spirits power. Will you join me? Will you believe? Will you desire more?
