hiJohn appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey. And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” (Mark 1:4–8 ESV)

THERE are many ways by which the true believer can “draw near to God.” The gates of the King’s palace are many; and through the love of Jesus, and the grace of His Spirit, it is our delight, by any of these gates of pearl, to enter, and approach our heavenly Father.

As an ancient historian, I am constantly frustrated at how little source material we possess. Some of the greatest writers from antiquity only survive in fragments. Even Tacitus, the magisterial historian of first-century Rome, has not come down to us complete. Some of Cicero’s most important writings have only been preserved in part; some are lost altogether.
