**Find a Shame Story**
Recap of Mark 14: Jesus had just been taken away | Peter denied him | and Jesus has just had this illigal trial | at night | Sehnehedren
Few points: Held at night, illigal, in the wrong place, and they couldn’t find two witnesses.
Jesus Delivered to Pilate
Jesus Delivered to Pilate
And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. And they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate. And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You have said so.” And the chief priests accused him of many things. And Pilate again asked him, “Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.” But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.
Greek: Sue leges: idiom, meaning: “To affirm the content of a statement, but not the context”
Why did they bring to Pilote? Jews could not convict someone to death | Romans had to | This was a political Coupe |
All Pilate cared about was if there was second king | Judea wasn’t even allowed a govenor | This would mean treason | We enter Pilates battle of shame | Pilot knew Jesus was not a threat | We get more commentary from John here;
Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.” Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” Pilate said to him, “What is truth?”
After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him.
He knew, that he was not guilty.
Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked. And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas. And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them. And he answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” For he perceived that it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead. And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews?” And they cried out again, “Crucify him.” And Pilate said to them, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.”
Interesting and never noticed before: The Crowd asked him, who was crowd? We know from Mark 14, from the trial, there was: High Priests, Chief Priests, Scribes, and their elders and the people close to them (advisors) already about 70 - it was a planted crowd |deeply political movement | heard it preached “same crowd” as yelling “Hosanna” but if we show integrity to the text, it actually has much more meaning |
Isn’t this what the enemy does “ Makes you feel like small problem, is HUGE, your mistake, your shame is UNFORGIVABLE” | Makes you feel as if EVERYONE is against you | This is how Pilot feels, but it’s not the reality | Beyond the walls
So why crowd asked? Pilot had to convince the people to stay in power | Now situation is worse for Pilot |
Crowd “Let one Go”, Pilot thinks this is an opportunity to let Jesus go.
Isn’t this interesting -They chose Barabas | Why did they want Jesus dead so badly? Part of reason is background, thriving economy, in pocket of Jews | Jesus breaks their comfort - shame is coming | What comforts does Jesus smash for you?
Comforts of this world usually lead to short term gain: drinking, eating, bad addictions, pleasing people,
*Discipline, and God’s way = eternity, Love,
*Old Comforts, your way = isolation & shame
How’s pilot feeling? Isolated...
Discipline is giving up what you want now, for what you want later.
Verse 14 tells us Pilot thinks, he is innocent | to make it worse, his wife tells him to:
Besides, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today in a dream.”
**Men Lesson: Listen to your wives**
Pilate wishing to what? SATISFY CROWD |
So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.
Jesus will ask us to do things that go against world | What wil you do?
Ok so now we are at Mark 15, verse 16
Jesus is Mocked
Jesus is Mocked
And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion. And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him. And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.
*Talk about the beating* - Jesus is enduring, for us.
And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. And it was the third hour when they crucified him. And the inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.” And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left. And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself, and come down from the cross!” So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.
Simon important to be named | In other Gospels, picks up his cross | Follows BEHIND Jesus. | Where we should be | Address term “robbers”
We recently looked into Psalms |
For dogs encompass me;
a company of evildoers encircles me;
they have pierced my hands and feet—
I can count all my bones—
they stare and gloat over me;
they divide my garments among them,
and for my clothing they cast lots.
1,000 years before birth of Christ | and yet, so specifc and so accurate. before Crusifiction was invented | Romans invented it
Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,
and he shall divide the spoil with the strong,
because he poured out his soul to death
and was numbered with the transgressors;
yet he bore the sin of many,
and makes intercession for the transgressors.
All who see me mock me;
they make mouths at me; they wag their heads;
“He trusts in the Lord; let him deliver him;
let him rescue him, for he delights in him!”
Let’s go to Verse 33 onwards
And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.
“And on that day,” declares the Lord God,
“I will make the sun go down at noon
and darken the earth in broad daylight.
I believe in this moment, judgement is occuring right - Darkness in the Bible, remember egypt “Darkness that could be felt’ - Imagine that -
*Close to how I feel when Emma is staring at me right*
And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
Quick Question: What is your default shame setting? | Mine: I am not enough | This is why I do so much | Not good enough father, Husband, Business Owner, Pastor, not enough, do more | and there is truth to that |
Interesting: If you think you’re bad at something, you are . meaning you are bad...”You sin, I sin, we all sin” might say “Inadaquate: you are. You might say “I am occasionaly obnoxious “no …all the time” - Because you can’t do it by yourself. we aren’t designed that way.
As long as you focus on you…you’ll always be vulnrable to shame
Because we are never…enough
Powerful story about God’s people, in slavery in egypt - 430 years.
Generations born into slavery: What did they think? You are not valuable, not worth anything. Then, God raised Moses. who said “Let my people go” - God delivered people from slavery
Tragedy: Outwardly Free | Inwardly a Slave. Some of you, are followers of Christ: You have been set free, Forgiven - You are being transformed by renewing of your mind | but just because your sin is forgiven, some of you are a slave to the SHAME of something that is not true about you, anymore.
that’s why The only way to heal from shame is to move the focus from what I’m not, to who CHRIST is. Take the focus off me, and onto Christ
Sometimes, though you have been forgiven by Christ, Though your sins he does not hold against you but you still living wiht, and consumed by shame based thinking and your still believing your something that God says your not.
Sometimes the enemy will have you believe that your sin is too big for God to forgive.
Our…Key…Verse for the year.
looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
He endured the cross because of what was coming | “Despising the shame” - Loathing it, hating it, he hated the shame that came with the cross. Every fibre of righteousness, every part of the word in the flesh, loathed, despised the shame that robs people from intimacy with God. It is a lie from the enemy. Holiness is not the destination, it’s your ORIGIN in CHRIST. From beginning of time God hates shame. In the same way, God hates the shame that crushes your soul, and robs your joy. He despises the shame you feel from your lies, or hidden eating patterns, from financial failure, from secrets, from hurt, he despises that shame.
He hates the shame that you endure because of what you said, or did, or didn’t do, he DESPISES the shame of your self doubt, and self hatred. He despises the shame of who were back then, and who you are now.
He despises the shame I feel when I think “I am not enough” “I am not a good enough father”
And our God in the flesh, our Saviour, came and put his body on a cross as those that he came to save put him in the corss, battered and bruised him....our God came to save the lost.
That;s why SHAME has no power compared to the JOY set before me. Jesus said “You can’t defeat me, you can’t defend me” Your shame, your sins, everything bad in you where put on the cross with Jesus and he said what?
“It IS FINISHED” It is done | We don’t need to tack anything on | We have the word | Not religion | We don’t need religion | We need Love | Love for our Lord for what he has done | Everything should come from that place.
… Your shame is finished....who you were…is finished - if you give your life over to Jesus - if you say…not my way but yours. It takes humility to humble yourself on your knees before God. to say “MAKE ME NEW”
Then what happens:
And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”
There were also women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. When he was in Galilee, they followed him and ministered to him, and there were also many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.
Interesting, centurion was the only one in Mark to say “This man was the Son of God!” | life of war | could of helped Kill Jesus | Something happened here
Curtain | The way to God was opened | The presence of God | The holy of holies where one man could enter once a year has been opened for all | not through my own ability, not because I deserve it, not be cause I earnt it but because Jesus Christ died on the cross and his blood paints me forgiven…it paints me free… put it on the cross. - This is what Crazy Love is all about.
Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died. And summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead. And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the corpse to Joseph. And Joseph bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.
in John it tells us that Nicodemus was with them. They become what? Bold…they have…courage. Explain the wrapping of Jesus | Most tender and manly thing they have ever done | They become bold, courage.|
They humbled themselves...
When Struggling you can have Humility, but lack boldness.
When Doing welll, yuo can be bold but usually lack humility
Jesus is the only one…that replaces shame and gives you both humility and boldness - if you come to him he will make you new.
Conclusion
Conclusion
Jesus Died, so you could be in the presence of God. Jesus didn’t get what he deserved - so that we didn’t get what we deserved.
Nate in bed, rolling over
Just reach out - We can take our eyes off ourselves and fix them on Jesus - The founder and perfector of our faith. Now is the time in your life.
