The Heart of Christ
HEART IN HEBREW
Ordination Experience (Sick!)
Parts of the mass
Songs by consecrated, LC, priests, youth group
Gathering of people from all over
Penitential Rite emotions
Tugged at my heart and I lost it
Ugly cry
Laying down, opening of heaven
My heart overflowed
IT WAS WICKED! SICK!
Grew up in California > context of the word
Out of this world, unbelievable
Understanding the term as it was used in context
The Word HEART
“LEVav or LEV”
Many cultures and different concepts and understanding of the “heart”
Jewish culture is most important because it was Christ, a Jew who’s heart was pierced where blood and water poured out
This concept was important to them
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.” Deuteronomy 6:5
Ignorant of the brain
All human internal activities bore from the heart
Life, mind, emotions, judgments, conscience, as well the muscle that give life, the blood
Nabal’s heart died (1 Sam 25: 37) within him and left him as a stone
1 Ki 3:12: Behold, I give you a wise and discerning mind
The word “mind” to our translation was heart to them
God speaks in images we can grasps
Speak vietnamese: “But why must we be here today?
You don’t understand? My communication is useless
The Jews understood the heart as the mind, machine, life source that animates our existence.
On the cross God reveals to us the heart of Christ (literally)
It is opened up for us to see
What’s inside? Water and blood
A miracle right? Heart is made for blood only no?
Blood = redemption: Water=purifying (baptism), new life
Miracle it may be but there is also the possibility of a medical explanation
Condition: Pericardial Effusion
Jesus experiencing extreme condition
Suffocation from hanging on the cross
Carbon dioxide buildup from the lack of oxygen
Heart responds by instinctive desire to breathe, force to beat faster
Lack of oxygen while circulating causes damage to tissues and capillaries
Capillaries begin leaking watery fluid from the blood into the tissues
Builds a coat of water around the heart
Slow suffocation, not just by breathing but every cell in his body
If Christ is the Word of God then what is he trying to communicate?
In spite of all that suffering, The Word made flesh SPOKE
Forgive them, for they know not
Today, you will be with me in paradise
Behold, your mother
Into your hands, I commend my spirit
In spite of pain and suffering, Christ heart spoke love
This is the SON OF GOD!
Jesus’ bursted heart gave life to the church
Lesson: Give your whole self
The Church was born
You’ve all sacrificed and given your own blood and sweat
This vocation is yours, this and all those (the priests and consecrated) vocations
It bore from our sacrifices and it needs continued watering to survive.
The water of sacrifice and love.
God, through this beautiful celebration of the heart of Christ grants us a gift
A plenary indulgence
* An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions
Be Catholic, received communion days before or after (preferebly the same day), be in the state of grace through sacramental confession, have the interior disposition to detach from sin and to pray for the intentions of the Pope (suggested Our Father and Hail Mary)
Today, Sacred heart, we can receive this gift by including the prayer of Reparation after communion.
Can be applied for yourself for a deceased soul only.
Let us prepare our hearts as we continue this celebration and for the reception of this gift.
