The Prime Principle
The Prime Principle
love Jesus
know Jesus
obey Jesus
let us follow Jesus said
The Essential Jesus Said
As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him. Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
Jesus decided that he wanted these men to follow him
they left immediately
giving up a successful vocation meant that
they had a more worthwhile endeavour before them
it was a call to be a disciple
we have the same call upon our life
will we have the same immediate response that these four first disciples had
As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.
here is another example
Levi was a tax collector = proven sinner
we are all proven sinners
Levi left his prosperous job. followed Jesus
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.
following Christ is the basic premise of being a disciple
the crux of the matter is whether we take up our cross
this relies on what we do with our self
The New International Version Chapter 16
25 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.
the paradox of God - lose your life and save it
live your life your way and you lose it
the lesson is important and crystal clear
The Obsession of Following
to be a disciple of Jesus is a 100% commitment
no need to be a hermit or a monk
yet we must live as spiritual Kingdom minded people
we must live devoted to Christ and to the things of Jesus
The Story of the Rich Young Mans
Mark 10:21 (NIV2011)
21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
the question was about inheriting eternal life
jesus gave the legalistic answer to a jewish man - obey the commandments
the man responded with an affirmation of obedience yet there still was an emptiness
go sell everything you have
remove the worldliness that you have and follow me
Leave All to Follow
Mark 10:28 (NIV2011)
28 Then Peter spoke up, “We have left everything to follow you!”
Peter heard this conversation
he said we have left everything
yet even Peter denied Jesus under pressure
we must follow Jesus to be his disciples
and we must carry that decision through thick and thin
Some Stop Following
Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.” From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.
strong connection between believing and following
it takes an incident, an offence, a word to reveal the lack of belief
many of his disciples turned back
do not be one who turns back
these did not have the Holy Spirit, so they may have returned after pentecost
the results are obvious
But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.
Follow Me
it is not a matter of a good church or friendly people
it is your following of Jesus that counts
yes there is a cost - a cost expressed in worldly values
family, job, friends, comfort , your natural life
yet how can we compare eternity for the temporary
God will prosper you as you follow him
but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.
