Introduction
We have looked at many things regarding the Holy Spirit and this final exhortation we are exhorted to NOT QUENCH HIM.
There are five (5) references to the Holy Spirit in the Thessalonian letters.
One instance in 2 Thess 2:13-14, Paul has eternity in mind as he discusses this when he says, “that you may gain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ”. This is a central thought to both letters.
This gives a welcoming scope to the topic. Whatever He is doing, it’s until the end.
“Do not quench”
“Do not quench”
The word means to extinguish or put out.
Example of it’s use in the OT gives us a sense of how it was used in the Septuagint
Who brings forth the chariot and the horse,
The army and the mighty man
(They will lie down together and not rise again;
They have been quenched and extinguished like a wick):
“Circumcise yourselves to the Lord
And remove the foreskins of your heart,
Men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem,
Or else My wrath will go forth like fire
And burn with none to quench it,
Because of the evil of your deeds.”
Eph 6:16 the shield of faith will extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one
Heb 11:34 faith allowed men and women of old to “quench the power of fire”
MEANING
To no longer have or experience the effects of something
What is the text saying?
What is the text saying?
The text, together with vs. 20, points back to the word. The “despising of prophetic utterances” is linked to the “quench” of vs. 19.
The word “despise” means to regard as nothing.
This is pointing to the revelation of the word to the church via the apostles and prophets.
Don’t quench the Spirit by disregarding what word has come to you.
[Keep in mind they did not have the bible as we have it today]
Do not quench the Spirit by regarding His words as nothing!
Certainly if we regard the words as nothing, we will stop the Spirit from His work in us.
Certainly if we regard the words as nothing, we will stop the Spirit from His work in us.
If the Holy Spirit can be quenched it means He’s at work!
Consider 1 Thes 4:7-8 - The rejection of this call for sanctification. What does the Spirit have to do with sanctification?
Consider 2 Thes 2:13 “through sanctification by the Spirit” Peter confirms this 1 Pet 1:2, This is our goal Heb 12:14
If the Spirit sanctifies, and sanctifies means to “separate as holy” or “to set a side for a special purpose”; How does He do it?
Once more we are faced with the notion of the word and Holy Spirit.
Once more we are faced with the notion of the word and Holy Spirit.
There’s something happening in us and the word and the Spirit is involved. This why WE MUST NOT QUENCH HIM!
Listen to the message to the Thessalonians?
Listen to the message to the Thessalonians?
They lived in a busy, wealthy, and religiously diverse country.
They had idolatrous backgrounds (1 Thes 1:9)
They received the word in much hardship (1 Thes 2:14)
They had already shown an example of displaying a Christ-like character (1 Thes 3:6)
Whatever the Holy Spirit was supposed to be doing in them it was doing, it may have been miraculous then but His work is not limited to that.
Whatever the Holy Spirit was supposed to be doing in them it was doing, it may have been miraculous then but His work is not limited to that.
GALATIANS EXPLAINS Gal 5:16-25
GALATIANS EXPLAINS Gal 5:16-25
This text shows us that the work of the Spirit in us is produce a changed character: This is the process of sanctification.
Walk in and be led by the Spirit Gal 5:16-19
When one does that, they will develop the fruit of the Spirit Gal 5:22-23. Paul then equates this to “belonging to Christ Jesus” [Gal 5:24]
With that we have seen regarding the work of the Holy Spirit we should not QUENCH Him!
With that we have seen regarding the work of the Holy Spirit we should not QUENCH Him!
