Introduction Power of Fear

Franklin D. Roosevelt, President of the United States during World War II, said, “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.”
That statement, of course, is rhetorical hyperbole, but there is a great measure of truth in it. Fear and discouragement have a way of defeating us before we even attempt anything. Nothing can be accomplished through us because we are afraid to start. In many cases, if we can overcome our fear enough to begin a task, positive results occur. But how do we overcome our fear? It is because we are afraid that we cannot overcome our fear!
Oswalt, John . Isaiah (The NIV Application Commentary) (pp. 464-465). Zondervan Academic. Kindle Edition.

Transforming Fear

Illustration: in her book “Joy From Fear: Creating The Life Of Your Dreams By Making Fear Your Friend”,
The clinical psychologist, Carla Marie Manley states:
The use of anti-anxiety medications to combat a host of psychological conditions continues to increase dramatically. Primary care physicians are often put in the position of prescribing medications for mental health concerns such as depression and anxiety, yet in-depth mental health care is often beyond the scope of their practices. These physicians often face many bureaucratic constraints, including appointment time limitations and pressure from healthcare companies to take the quick-fix, “pill popping” route. As a result, the client seeking pharmacological mental health treatment is often not given appropriate attention, critical follow-up care, and necessary psychotherapy. This common pharmacological approach to treating mental health issues can be likened to throwing prescription darts and hoping to hit near the bullseye; this is unacceptable. A model that provides mindful, individualized care is necessary, as each person’s unique genetic makeup can make it difficult to predict the nature of a response to a medication.
This additional stress can lead an already anxious or depressed client to feeling even worse. These individuals are rarely—if ever—told that it is the approach, not the individual, that falls short of what is needed.
Anxiety disorders account for 1/3 of the nation’s annual mental health bill
Placebo has approximately same impact or effect as the actual anti-depressant
Take a step back learn from what has not been working.
Take a step back, study and understand Root causes and underlining issues of fear are left unexplored
What is ailing within needs thoughtful and diligent attention
Dr. Manley offers a new vantage point:
The psyche is often undervalued and marginalized in today’s externally focused world. The human psyche may be thought of as the totality of the mind’s conscious and unconscious aspects.
The word psyche is derived from the Latin psyche, or “animating spirit,”
and the Greek psyche, or “soul, mind, spirit; breath; life.” Interestingly, the Greek term also refers to “the invisible animating principle or entity which occupies and directs the physical body.”14
Clearly, humans have long believed that the psyche has a direct impact on the body itself. When the psyche is thriving, the physical body feels lighter and free. When the psyche is not doing well, the body will suffer.
Anxiety is the heightened anticipation of a perceived threat
Anxiety is nothing more than fear inspired by an imagined future collapse
Anxiety is the failure of Trust
Anxiety and it’s parent fear are both rooted in the lack of Faith

Transition To Body

Isaiah is speaking to a people debilitated with fear. They are in a situation that is completely foreign to them. They grew up secure in their own land, confident that because they served the living God and had his temple in their midst, nothing bad could happen to them.
Of course, they are not only afraid that God has left them, they are also afraid that their many enemies will overpower them.
Encouragement comes from knowing that God is personally present with them in their distress and from knowing that he will be directly involved in the outcome.

Body

The LORD’s Inclusive Invitation For Renewal (vv1-4)

Isaiah 41:1–4 ESV
1 Listen to me in silence, O coastlands; let the peoples renew their strength; let them approach, then let them speak; let us together draw near for judgment. 2 Who stirred up one from the east whom victory meets at every step? He gives up nations before him, so that he tramples kings underfoot; he makes them like dust with his sword, like driven stubble with his bow. 3 He pursues them and passes on safely, by paths his feet have not trod. 4 Who has performed and done this, calling the generations from the beginning? I, the Lord, the first, and with the last; I am he.
Previously in Isaiah 40
They that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength
v1- THE LORD God who judges the self-reliant people’s of the world
v2-4- The LORD God who self-reveals himself to the people’s of the world

Arrogance Of Idolatrous Human Self-Reliance (vv5-7)

V5- Peoples of world in fear who do not know the LORD
Illustration: Men’s Fellowship on did God cause this Pandemic. What is the purpose of it?
V6- Peoples of world strengthening one another through their words
V7- Peoples of world strengthening one another through their skills
Isaiah 41:7 ESV
7 The craftsman strengthens the goldsmith, and he who smooths with the hammer him who strikes the anvil, saying of the soldering, “It is good”; and they strengthen it with nails so that it cannot be moved.
Because there is no encouragement to be had from their gods, idol worshipers must encourage one another (41:6–7).
Isaiah 41:6–7 ESV
6 Everyone helps his neighbor and says to his brother, “Be strong!” 7 The craftsman strengthens the goldsmith, and he who smooths with the hammer him who strikes the anvil, saying of the soldering, “It is good”; and they strengthen it with nails so that it cannot be moved.

The LORD’s Unwavering Commitment Towards His Friends (vv8-10)

8–10  “But you, Israel, are my servant.
You’re Jacob, my first choice,
descendants of my good friend Abraham.
I pulled you in from all over the world,
called you in from every dark corner of the earth,
Telling you, ‘You’re my servant, serving on my side.
I’ve picked you. I haven’t dropped you.’
Don’t panic. I’m with you.
There’s no need to fear for I’m your God.
I’ll give you strength. I’ll help you.
I’ll hold you steady, keep a firm grip on you.

Transition To Close- Why do you say...

Isaiah 40:27–31 ESV
27 Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, “My way is hidden from the Lord, and my right is disregarded by my God”? 28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. 29 He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. 30 Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; 31 but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

A the Apostle Pau would say over 600 years later

Ephesians 3:14–16 ESV
14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, 16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being,
Ephesians 3:20–21 ESV
20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
Philippians 1:6 ESV
6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

Greater love has no one than this

Jesus said no longer do I call you servants...
John 15:12–17 ESV
12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 These things I command you, so that you will love one another.

Close- Be Not Dismayed

The hymn writer once said...
Be not dismayed whate'er betide
God will take care of you
Beneath His wings of love abide
God will take care of you

Let not your hearts be troubled

John 14:1–7 ESV
1 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

Greater works

John 14:12–14 ESV
12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. 13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.

Be strong & Courageous

Deuteronomy 31:6–8 ESV
6 Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” 7 Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land that the Lord has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall put them in possession of it. 8 It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”

The LORD is my light

Psalm 27:1–5 ESV
1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? 2 When evildoers assail me to eat up my flesh, my adversaries and foes, it is they who stumble and fall. 3 Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me, yet I will be confident. 4 One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple. 5 For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock.

Fear Not, God’s good pleasure

Luke 12:32 ESV
32 “Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

Peace I leave you with

John 14:27 ESV
27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

God has not given us...

2 Timothy 1:6–7 ESV
6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, 7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

Humble youself

1 Peter 5:6–9 ESV
6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. 8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.

Epilogue

1 John 4:17–20 ESV
17 By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. 19 We love because he first loved us. 20 If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.
