In that Day

Context
Jesus is going away, to the Father; to prepare us a place
They will be hated and persecuted
Holy Spirit is coming, to be in them
Jesus will teach them things, through the Holy Spirit
Sorrow into Joy
Joy is the settled assurance that God is in control of all the details of my life
John 16:23 (LEB)
And on that day you will ask me nothing. Truly, truly I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give you.
before we looked at the phrase, in respect to the rapture and our knowledge will be complete
but this morning we will look at it in the subject of prayer
asking Jesus Questions
Read John 16 23-33
Pray

Asking Questions

there is coming a time when you wont ask me anymore
John 16:23 (LEB)
And on that day you will ask me nothing. Truly, truly I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give you.
we are talking here about prayer
asking questions?
what kind of questions did they ask?
Lord, where are you going?” (13:36).
“Why can’t I follow you now?” (13:37).
“Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” (14:5). “
Lord, show us the Father” (14:8).
“Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?” (14:22)
they are not very perceptive and show ignorance
they are not even in the King James language
they are questions that are not proper prayer
but Jesus is telling them that they will ask the Father any question that comes to their lips
not necessarily formal, at a certain time,

Ask In My Name

Jesus is changing the nature of the asking just a little bit
from a would you tell me the answer, to would you give me
John 16:24 LEB
Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.
What does Jesus mean when we ask in His name
we would pray as Jesus would pray, asking, what would Jesus ask the Father for
we come in the account of Jesus and the finished work on the cross
because Jesus died for us
satisfied the judgement for our sin
made us to be Children of God
because we are adopted
we come in the name of Jesus because He has the account
we cant go into the bank with someones check with no signature and expect anything from them
the same we cant go to the Father in our own name and expect anything
Jesus is our account, anything we have is in Jesus
Jesus has granted me full access to the bank of Heaven through Jesus
John 16:25–27 LEB
“I have said these things to you in figurative sayings. An hour is coming when I will speak to you in figurative sayings no longer, but I will tell you plainly about the Father. On that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf. For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.
Jesus- I’m not going to ask the Father for you
You are going to ask Him directly
it is something that we have been doing from the beginning
but something new for the disciples
1 Peter 2:9 LEB
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s possession, so that you may proclaim the virtues of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light,
we don’t need a priest to be between us and the Father
Hebrews 4:14 LEB
Therefore, because we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession.
We have our great high priest
why are we a priest? why can we come directly to the Father?
because we are part of the family

Speaking plainly

John 16:28 LEB
I have gone out from the Father and have come into the world; again, I am leaving the world and am going to the Father.”
Jesus is revealing His true nature God the son
from the Father , Back to the Father
His voluntary coming as a man to earth
to associate with us . to die for us.
something they have known for a longtime
Peter proclaimed Him as the Messiah
all of the miracles/ signs
Jesus return to Heaven to be our advocate to the Father
to prepare a place for us
John 16:28–29 LEB
I have gone out from the Father and have come into the world; again, I am leaving the world and am going to the Father.” His disciples said, “Behold, now you are speaking plainly and are telling us no figurative saying!
WE BELIEVE!
their belief is very shallow at this point
but it would be short lived
Jesus would speak plainly to them again
John 16:31 LEB
Jesus replied to them, “Now do you believe?
at last you believe, after all this time
John 16:32 LEB
Behold, an hour is coming—and has come—that you will be scattered each one to his own home, and you will leave me alone. And I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
you will leave me
you will scatter courage in numbers
their faith would be gone, Jesus has been arrested
you are not as strong as you think you are
remember the Holy Spirit has not come upon them yet
every thing they are doing is in their own power
look at the 2 on the road Emaus so sure of their faith before the crucifixion
but Jesus taught them starting in Genesis
and as their knowledge increased and their final vision of Jesus their faith soared through the roof
we will be scattered, alone, confused, low faith,
but Jesus knows that,
He did not condemn the disciples for their lack
did not chew them out
Jesus knows that we are sheep
knows our weaknesses, knows us individually, knows our sorrows, and pain
BUT as we look at Jesus
he is the total opposite
He has complete trust in the Father, He stood alone.
He is the pillar of strength
our Faith is in Jesus. not in our ability keep our faith

Shalom

John 16:33 LEB
I have said these things to you so that in me you may have peace. In the world you have affliction, but have courage! I have conquered the world.”
the reason for the discourse is for them to have peace
My Peace I will give you
George Morrison defined peace as “the possession of adequate resources.” In Jesus Christ
we have every thing we need
the world wants to overcome us
to defeat us, to overwhelm us,
but be of good cheer Jesus has conquered the world
but our trust needs to be in Jesus
our confidence needs to be in Jesus
not in our selves
