submission - place yourself under the authority of others.
Not, being placed. not like wrestling where you tap out.
Why? reverence for Christ.
We are called to submit to one another.
Christians are always called to lay themselves down for others.
Submission is for everyone (redundant? Not in bullitin)
Submission is for everyone (redundant? Not in bullitin)
Men submitted to the government and church leadership.
Women had little interaction with them, so they submitted.
Submission is good for your soul - look at a kid who doesn’t obey his parents and see how his life turns out.
Wives should submit to your husband.
Wives should submit to your husband.
22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.
wives, submit to your own husbands. - Not women submit to men. We all have the same position before God.
This is also men not punishing women in their place. but rather the wife willingly submitting. It is a thing of authority, cause you must do it yourself.
As to the Lord - the most important part of the verse. It is essentially saying you are looking past your husband to the Lord.
Josephus - Jewish historian said “ For saith the Scripture “ A woman is inferior to her husband in all things. Let her, therefore be obedient to him; not so that he should abuse her, but that she may acknowledge her duty to her husband.
We submit for the Lord.
We submit for the Lord.
We submit not because someone is more important, but because God tells us to.
23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.
head of the wife. - Ephesians has continually talked about body and Christ being the head.
He starts to paint a picture of marriage should model Christ relationship with the church.
We would not want to go to a church which does not submit to Christ.
24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.
church submits to Christ - How does the church submit to Christ? We willingly follow him.
wives should submit in everything to their husbands. -
SUBMISSION ILLUSTRATION - stand behind. Throw things at him.
When shouldn’t we submit? When he asked for sin. Abuse? You can leave to work on marriage.
Most of the time he is just human, respect him and it will help him listen better - FUNNY ILLUSTRATION???
Husbands should love their wife.
Husbands should love their wife.
25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,
husbands, love your wives- Who has the higher call? Here is what we are called to do. Love your wife. A wife that is well loved, does not have a problem with submission.
The problem arises when men demand submission and yet are not actually loving their wife. This relationship only works when both are doing their part.
If you are ever in the position of authority. Love them.
As Christ loved the church - how does he love the church? unconditionally.
To be a good father, means you are first a good husband. Good father’s treat their mom with respect. Show them how to behave.
Gave himself up for her - He gave himself.
26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,
sanctify her - set her apart. She is unique to him.
having cleansed her - This is still talking about Jesus and the church, but it the model
washing of the water with the word - Not fire hydrant. Ceremonial cleansing. Gently rubbing dirt off.
27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.
why does Jesus sanctify her, so that he she would be holy for Him. In marriage.
splendor, without spot or wrinkle - If you are passionate about something, you care about the smallest detail. (cars…?)
Holy without blemish -
Love always puts others first.
Love always puts others first.
CONCLUSION: wedding story. Marriage and fatherhood. Then to everyone. The love of Christ has made us clean.
I do fireworks.
Tents put up - never mind.
