Note: This parallels Matthew 8:28-34 and Mark 5:1-20, and it joins a list of other instances in the Scriptures of people possessed by demons. ( (i.) Demon-Possessed Boy (Luke 9:37-42) (ii.) Young Girl Possessed by demons.Acts 16:16-18; (iii.) Seven Sons of Sceva (Acts 19:12-16) and (iv.) various demon-possessed people (Mark 1:32-34) .
Luke 8:1 begins by speaking to the issue of people possessed by demons, who were healed by Jesus (Luke 8:1-3).
Show the Power of God’s Word To An Unfavorable Case (8:26-27) - “26 Then they sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. 27 When He got out on land, a demon-possessed man from the town met Him. For a long time he had worn no clothes and did not stay in a house but in the tombs.”
Note: Jesus was intentioned to travel to this region to minister, and while he continues his journey a man possessed with demons approaches him. Jesus is well acquainted with demons, because he has already freed (Luke 8:1-3). These collection of Scriptures demonstrate the reality and existence of demons or evil spirits that are under the direction of the devil.
Numbers 19:16 (HCSB) - “16 Anyone in the open field who touches a person who has been killed by the sword or has died, or a human bone, or a grave, will be unclean for seven days.”
Isaiah 65:1-5 (HCSB) - “1 "I was sought by those who did not ask; I was found by those who did not seek Me. I said: Here I am, here I am, to a nation that was not called by My name. 2 I spread out My hands all day long to a rebellious people who walk in the wrong path, following their own thoughts. 3 These people continually provoke Me to My face, sacrificing in gardens, burning incense on bricks, 4 sitting among the graves, spending nights in secret places, eating swine's flesh, and putting polluted broth in their bowls. 5 They say: Keep to yourself, don't come near me, for I am too holy for you! These practices are smoke in My nostrils, a fire that burns all day long.”
Show the Power of God’s Word Despite An Unusual Confession (8:28) - “28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before Him, and said in a loud voice, "What do You have to do with me, Jesus, You Son of the Most High God? I beg You, don't torment me!"
Mark 1:21-25 (HCSB) - “21 Then they went into Capernaum, and right away He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and began to teach. 22 They were astonished at His teaching because, unlike the scribes, He was teaching them as one having authority. 23 Just then a man with an unclean spirit was in their synagogue. He cried out, 24 "What do You have to do with us, Jesus-Nazarene? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are-the Holy One of God!" 25 But Jesus rebuked him and said, "Be quiet, and come out of him!”
1 John 3:8 (HCSB) - “8 The one who commits sin is of the Devil, for the Devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God was revealed for this purpose: to destroy the Devil's works.”
Revelation 20:1-3;10 (HCSB) - “1 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven with the key to the abyss and a great chain in his hand. 2 He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for 1,000 years. 3 He threw him into the abyss, closed it, and put a seal on it so that he would no longer deceive the nations until the 1,000 years were completed. After that, he must be released for a short time.; 10 The Devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet are, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.”

Continue Showing the Power of God’s Word Over Unclean Principalities (8:29-33)

Show the Power Despite the Presence of Many Principalities (8:29-31) - “29 For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and although he was guarded, bound by chains and shackles, he would snap the restraints and be driven by the demon into deserted places. 30 "What is your name?" Jesus asked him. "Legion," he said-because many demons had entered him. 31 And they begged Him not to banish them to the abyss.”
🔑 Ephesians 6:10-12 (HCSB) - “10 Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and by His vast strength. 11 Put on k the full armor l of God so that you can stand against the tactics m of the Devil. 12 For our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the world powers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavens."
Mark 1:26-27 (HCSB) - “ 26 And the unclean spirit convulsed him, shouted with a loud voice, and came out of him. 27 Then they were all amazed, so they began to argue with one another, saying, "What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him." 28 His fame then spread throughout the entire vicinity of Galilee.”
2 Timothy 2:25-26 (HCSB) - “25 instructing his opponents with gentleness. Perhaps God will grant them repentance to know the truth. 26 Then they may come to their senses and escape the Devil's trap, having been captured by him to do his will.”
Philippians 2:9-11 (HCSB) - “9 For this reason God also highly exalted Him and gave Him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow- of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth- 11 and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
Matthew 25:41 (HCSB) - “41 Then He will also say to those on the left, 'Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the Devil and his angels!”
Show the Power Despite the Malicious Principalities (8:32-33) - “32 A large herd of pigs was there, feeding on the hillside. The demons begged Him to permit them to enter the pigs, and He gave them permission. 33 The demons came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned.”
1 John 4:1-2 (HCSB) - “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to determine if they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 This is how you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit who confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God. 3 But every spirit who does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist; you have heard that he is coming, and he is already in the world now.”
Psalm 62:11 (HCSB) - “11 God has spoken once; I have heard this twice: strength belongs to God, 12 and faithful love belongs to You, Lord. For You repay each according to his works.”
1 John 4:4 (HCSB) - “4 You are from God, little children, and you have conquered them, because the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”
1 Peter 5:8 (HCSB) - “8 Be sober! Be on the alert! Your adversary the Devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour.”

Continue Showing the Power of God’s Word to Promote Jesus (8:34-39)

Show The Power of God by Your Conversion by Jesus (8:34-37) - “34 When the men who tended them saw what had happened, they ran off and reported it in the town and in the countryside. 35 Then people went out to see what had happened. They came to Jesus and found the man the demons had departed from, sitting at Jesus' feet, dressed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. 36 Meanwhile the eyewitnesses reported to them how the demon-possessed man was delivered. 37 Then all the people of the Gerasene region asked Him to leave them, because they were gripped by great fear. So getting into the boat, He returned.”
Note: The visual evidence of the man’s healing and conversion elicited excitement acclaims. This man was more than healed of demons; his heart was converted to love Jesus as a disciple, who diligently sat at the master’s feet.
“The Greek word esōthē, or “saved,” is a favorite Lukan word to describe the healing-salvation Jesus brings. The man had not simply been cured of his demon possession but of everything that separated him from God.”
Hebrews 2:14-15 (HCSB) - “14 Now since the children have flesh and blood in common, He also shared in these, so that through His death He might destroy the one holding the power of death-that is, the Devil- 15 and free those who were held in slavery all their lives by the fear of death.”
Psalm 51:10 (HCSB) - “10 God, create a clean heart for me and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Show the Power of God by Connecting Others to Jesus (8:38-39) - "38 The man from whom the demons had departed kept begging Him to be with Him. But He sent him away and said, 39 "Go back to your home, and tell all that God has done for you." And off he went, proclaiming throughout the town all that Jesus had done for him.”
Acts 1:8 (HCSB) - 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Psalm 107:21-22 (HCSB) - “21 Let them give thanks to the Lord for His faithful love and His wonderful works for the human race. 22 Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and announce His works with shouts of joy.”
1 Timothy 1:13-16 (HCSB) - “13 one who was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an arrogant man. Since it was out of ignorance that I had acted in unbelief, I received mercy, 14 and the grace of our Lord overflowed, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 15 This saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance: "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners"-and I am the worst of them. 16 But I received mercy because of this, so that in me, the worst [of them], Christ Jesus might demonstrate the utmost patience as an example to those who would believe in Him for eternal life.”
