Happy Fathers Day!
Looking to the Father!
4 Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.
5 And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin.
6 Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him.
Introduction:
As seen in last Sunday’s sermon, we are in fact the children of God. We shall be like Him. We are to be pure. But in a world, that is promoting godlessness, sinfulness, distortion, deceitfulness, maliciousness, how can we stay on course?
Sinfulness- sin at its fullest!
Central themes of the passage.
Avoidance of Sin
Holiness of God
1 John 1:5- there is no darkness on Him it all.
1 John 1:6- Practice the truth
Thesis Statement:
God has delivered us from lawlessness so that we may be with Him eternally.
The opposite of purifying oneself is found in verse 4.- William McDonald
The word commit literally means "does" (GK poieo).
It is a matter of continual behavior, expressed by the present, continuous sense. It is insubordination to God, wanting one's own way and refusing to acknowledge the Lord as rightful Sovereign. In essence it is placing once;s own will above the will of God. It is opposition to a living person who has the right to be obeyed.
A christian cannot continually walk in sin:
1) Practicing sin denies the complete purpose for which Christ came to the world.
2) By doing so it has full disregard for His Incarnation.
3) It denies the One whose name He bears.
As a hinge verse in the NT, In Him there is no sin. Peter discusses this truth that He did no sin. Paul tells us that He knew no sin, and John tells us In Him there is no sin.
"Sins of commission, doing what we should not do, are described by the apostle John in this verse. The law of Moses was recorded in the OT and its basic moral principles are repeated in the NT."- Norma Geisler
As the Sovereign, God revealed inviolable guidelines by which His servants should live. However, Adam broke His law, as have all Adamites since. The transgressions are at the heart of sin.; the scripture asserts "Death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the likeness of Adam's transgressions who is the figure of Jesus that was to come (Romans 5:14). Indeed sin is the transgression of the law" 1 John 3:4; Romans 4:15 ). Martyn Loyd Jones says-you see, it is all in terms of the law. While the law demands perfection, it cannot admit any blemish; you cannot offer a perfect sacrifice for sin if there is any defect. 3 John 11
Being a moral attribute, righteousness can also be possessed by creatures: It is a communicable characteristic of God. Hence we are to practice the truth 1 John 3:7.
John's description allows for no exceptions or dual standards. James 2:10-11
It is clear, then, that believers will not habitually violate the law off God. Whereas, they formerly allowed lawlessness to dominate their lives they now love God and desire to submit to Him. -MacArthur.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.
1 john 2 begins with the command to not sin!
Sin is incompatible with the Works of Christ. Christ's primary goal was to take away sins, lets not add to them. He is mans advocate!
He is the sinless Saviour- Martyn Loyd-Jones.
9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
He is delivering you increasingly from the power of sin and from its pollution and that you look forward to that blessed hope and the glorious appearing of the Great God and Saviour Jesus Christ (Titus 2:13) when He shall finally come back and wind up the affairs of earth and of time and destroy evil in its every manifestation and usher in that eternal glory in which we are, as the children of God, shall share: God grant that that may be our position and our experience.- Jones
So how do we stay the course?
16 These are grumblers, complainers, walking according to their own lusts; and they mouth great swelling words, flattering people to gain advantage.
17 But you, beloved, remember the words which were spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ:
18 how they told you that there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts.
19 These are sensual persons, who cause divisions, not having the Spirit.
20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,
21 keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
22 And on some have compassion, making a distinction;
23 but others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh.
24 Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, And to present you faultless Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy,
25 To God our Savior, Who alone is wise, Be glory and majesty, Dominion and power, Both now and forever. Amen.
AS Fathers & Dads how will you be remembered by ? If you were to die today, during the mass cleanup would your kids and relatives find signs that you had an interactive and integrated relationship with the Father?
A.W. Tozer said, “Every believer has the obligation to give an undiminished view of who Christ is to the next generation.
