The Sweet and The Bitter

James 3:8–12 ESV
but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.

Sweet Words and Bitter Thoughts
Ps 1:1

WISHING SOMEONE ILL

Proverbs 24:29 ESV
Do not say, “I will do to him as he has done to me; I will pay the man back for what he has done.”
Philippians 4:8 ESV
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

Deceit

John 8:44 ESV
You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Pride

Proverbs 16:18 ESV
Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.
Ezekiel 28:15 ESV
You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created, till unrighteousness was found in you.

Gossip

Proverbs 26:20–22 ESV
For lack of wood the fire goes out, and where there is no whisperer, quarreling ceases. As charcoal to hot embers and wood to fire, so is a quarrelsome man for kindling strife. The words of a whisperer are like delicious morsels; they go down into the inner parts of the body.
Gossip is often the thing that keeps quarrels going.
It is wrong to make ourselves feel good by saying bad things about others.
We do not need to tell everything we know about others.
Proverbs 11:13 ESV
Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets, but he who is trustworthy in spirit keeps a thing covered.
Luke 4:22 ESV
And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?”
Ephesians 4:29 ESV
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
Ephesians 4:27 ESV
and give no opportunity to the devil.
