Futility

Futility
Digging in sand
Teaching a cat
Cleaning a childs room
Ecclesiastes 2:9–11 ESV
9 So I became great and surpassed all who were before me in Jerusalem. Also my wisdom remained with me. 10 And whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I kept my heart from no pleasure, for my heart found pleasure in all my toil, and this was my reward for all my toil. 11 Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had expended in doing it, and behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun.
Solomon talks about the vanity of pleasure, wisdom, and work. But, he concludes:
Ecclesiastes 2:24–26 ESV
24 There is nothing better for a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his toil. This also, I saw, is from the hand of God, 25 for apart from him who can eat or who can have enjoyment? 26 For to the one who pleases him God has given wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the sinner he has given the business of gathering and collecting, only to give to one who pleases God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.
Since the curse. Life on earth has been broken. It is broken because we strive for heaven without God.
Genesis 3:17–19 ESV
17 And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; 18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
So man’s lot in this world is difficult and often seems futile. But there is a solution. Solomon hinted at it and the scriptures proclaim it.
Today, we are going to discuss how Christian Men should view this struggle.

Psalm 127 ESV
A Song of Ascents. Of Solomon. 1 Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. 2 It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep. 3 Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. 4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. 5 Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.
First principle is the cure to futility.
Are you submitting/abiding in God?
Unless the Lord . . .
Builds
Defends
Produces
. . . It is all in vain.
Second Principle
Children are a blessing from the Lord.
What is an arrow? How is it used?
It is sent out in order to impact. It is guided and provided with strength by the warrior and set loose to change the world.
You are God’s Arrow!
If you trust the Lord, as his child, he will send you out.
Proverbs 3:5–6 ESV
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
Have you laid your life in the hands of God. Have you accepted him as Lord and Savior. Have you given up trying to find meaning in all the world throws at you?
Mark 8:34–38 ESV
34 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. 36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? 37 For what can a man give in return for his soul? 38 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”
Father’s, Brother’s, sister’s, mother’s have you laid your lives into the hands of the mighty warrior who has secured your soul and your eternity?
