1. Errors of the Pharisees V1-12
a. This whole section is directed towards the disciples and the crowd. V1
b. The scribes and pharisees are in the same position as Moses, so Jesus tells the people to do what they teach. V1-2
i. But, they are not models. They do not act like they teach.
c. They are willing to put burdens on others but not willing to do even the littlest to help. V4
d. When they are active, they do what they can to be noticed. V5
e. They love the honor and esteem. They want to be the center of everything. V6-7
i. This would even include what people call them.
f. Jesus contrasts this by saying not to be called Rabbi. V8
i. There is one Teacher.
g. Jesus says not to call anyone your father. V9
i. You have a heavenly father.
h. Jesus says not to be called leader. V10
i. You have a leader.
i. The practicality is in being humble, not simply titles. V11
i. The position to strive for is that of a servant.
j. Humility leads to a high position. V12
i. This is counter intuitive.
