INTRO:

Last week we examined our motivation: love
Jesus said that loving God was the greatest commandment and loving each other was the 2nd.
all Law and prophets rest on the foundation of those.
Today, let us look at our mission.
Out love for God and others we make disciples.
This has been named the Great Commission
Matthew 28:18–20 ESV
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Notice that Jesus begins with stressing His authority.
“All Authority”
He is the sovereign King of Kings and Lord of Lords
Our allegiance is to Him above all others
His instructions and commands are to be followed above all others as well.
2 Peter 3:9 ESV
The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
God’s loving nature demands that the Christian faith be a missionary faith.
He is love
He is not willing that any perish!
God doesn’t send people to Hell!
They reject His gracious provision of salvation
People send themselves there by ignoring God’s grace.
He tasks us with proclaiming repentance just as He did
Matthew 4:17 ESV
From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Make Disciples

While going

literally: “going”
As we are living life, wherever we go, we are on mission to make disciples
In daily life:
home/work/school/etc
Intentional fishing expeditions!
Jesus called disciples
From the start HE told them to evangelize.
Matthew 4:18–19 ESV
While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

Make disciples

followers of Jesus
It begins with being born again as Jesus said in John 3.
without salvation, we cannot hope to truly be a follower of Jesus.
Our aim is to proclaim and lead them to believe the gospel
Romans 1:16 ESV
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
Romans 10:9–13 ESV
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
It is that simple and that complex
We are sinners in need of a Savior
We have violated God’s law
Jesus paid the price
HE died and rose again
He forgives the sin debt all who
believe in their heart: faith
Call on His name: Repent

All nations

Our objective is to win the world!
Nobody (no group) is left out
all people need the Lord
Every nationality, social status, language, etc.
The rich need the gospel ...... so do the poor
The young and the old
The communist and capitalist need the gospel
The Yankee and Southerner both need the gospel
ANY division you can imagine: They ALL need the gospel
There is only 1 gospel and every human being needs to hear it!

Baptize Disciples

Baptism identifies us with Christ and demonstrates what he has done
We are to be baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
Strong affirmation of the Trinity
One God, three persons.
Baptism is NOT essential for salvation.
However, as the first act of obedience, it identifies us with and unites us with a local church.
It proclaims Christ and demonstrates what has occured in our lives
Romans 6:1–4 ESV
What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
Death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus
We have died to sin, were “buried” in baptism, and now are raised to walk in a new life.

Teach Disciples

We call this discipleship
a disciple is a follower
It is far more than just a believer
Not just get saved, baptized, and go on
That is step one in a lifetime of walking with Christ
From that moment we are born again and going to heaven.
The rest of our lives we are to walk with Him and learn to be like Him
To obey all of Christ’s commands.
There are no important and unimportant commands
We are to train new disciples in the commands of Christ
Love God and others
Make disciples
This is a true mark of being a Christ follower
We obey Him
We live His Way
We study and apply His word
We teach others to do the same

Conclusion:

Jesus closes by reminding us we don’t do this alone
Matthew 28:20 ESV
teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
He is always with us!
We go at His command and under His authority and we are assured He is with us as we go.
He does the work!
The Holy Spirit convicts and calls people.
He grows people
It is humbling to think He chooses to use us.
