Introduction

Recap
Jesus was taken captive and the trials began, those 6 trials.
Three before the Jews
Three before the Romans
Still at the end of the last trail before Pilate who again told them that he found no fault in Jesus
The truth that Pilate was asking about was there right before him
The Way the Truth and the Life
The Son of God
The Messiah the Jew was to be looking for was right before them, but they did not want to see it

Reading

John 18:38-40
The release of Barabbas
Robber and a murderer
John 19:1-3
The mocking physically
Crown of thorns dug into His brow
Clothed in purple
Expensive color from sea snails
Denotes wealth or position
The mocking verbally
Yelled at Him
Ironically they were calling Him the right title, they just didn’t know it
Scourging
Whipping
Cat of 9 tails ripping both ways
John 9:4-6
Chief priests and Officers
The highest of the religious elite
John 9:7
Tragic error in allegation
Jesus did not make Himself the Son of God
John 3:16 - For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
God in His love for the world
Gave His Son
In rejecting Christ, they were very much rejecting God and God’s love
That has not changed
If you don’t believe
Rejecting God’s Son
Rejecting God’s love
They were rejecting Jesus as the Son of God, as their King
They were revealing that their RELIGION, their system of belief was their king.
They had turned the law into a king instead of being a schoolmaster teaching them they needed Christ.
John 19:8-12
Pilate revealing who his king is
Caesar
Power of the Roman system of rule
I have the power
Verse 11 - echoed again in Romans
All authority comes from God
His power is Supreme
Pilate’s King was Caesar, the Government system
Jew’s King was their religious system
John 19:13-16
We have no King but Caesar
Rev 17:14 - 14 These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.
Phil 2:9-11- 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Tragic mistake, of great consequence

Message

The Jew - Their religious system was their King

They had turned the law into an idol
They had comfort in that system, which should have made them uncomfortable
They had status in that system, divided and authority to rule over the people
They had security in that system, they were profiting off of it
They were holding on to it and Jesus was a threat to that
That system ruled over their life

The Gentile - Their government system was their King

Pilate was full of power
But his system had one higher being Caesar
His fear was not of God, but of Caesar
Government ruled over their life

People Today - Many different Kings

Government
Jobs
Hobbies
Sports
Money
God’s Desire
Col 1:18 - “And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.”
Supreme power
Supreme authority
As king of my life, I bow to Him, I do as He pleases, I follow where He leads
Matthew 6:24 - No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
The Jew chose their King, their religious system over the Saviour
The Roman, chose their King, Ceasar, the government system over the Savior
People today chose their King
We choose who or what rules over us as well
