Affirmation

Historic Creeds and Confessions (Apostles’ Creed)
I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead and buried; The third day he rose again from the dead He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church; the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Psalter Lesson

Psalm 148:1–14 ESV
1 Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise him in the heights! 2 Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his hosts! 3 Praise him, sun and moon, praise him, all you shining stars! 4 Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens! 5 Let them praise the name of the Lord! For he commanded and they were created. 6 And he established them forever and ever; he gave a decree, and it shall not pass away. 7 Praise the Lord from the earth, you great sea creatures and all deeps, 8 fire and hail, snow and mist, stormy wind fulfilling his word! 9 Mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars! 10 Beasts and all livestock, creeping things and flying birds! 11 Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the earth! 12 Young men and maidens together, old men and children! 13 Let them praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is exalted; his majesty is above earth and heaven. 14 He has raised up a horn for his people, praise for all his saints, for the people of Israel who are near to him. Praise the Lord!

Mark 4:35-41

Mark 4:35–41 ESV
On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

Who is this?

That was their question.

Who were they expecting?

Abraham?
Who God used through the barren womb of his wife Sarah to build a great nation.
Who God promised that his offspring would be like the stars in the heavens.
Genesis 15:1–6 ESV
After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” But Abram said, “O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.” And behold, the word of the Lord came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.” And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.
Were they expecting a father figure like Abram?
Or maybe they was expecting a Joseph?
A little shepherd boy whom God used to save the Children of Israel from famine.
Who was sold into slavery by his brothers, and then raised up by God to second in command of over all of Egypt.
Who would forgive his brothers and bring his whole family to Egypt where they would live well for many years.
Moses?
Who after they had become slaves in Egypt, God used to set them free.
Who God used to tell Pharo to let my people Go. PHARO SAID NO
Who God used to inflict 10 plagues on Egypt until at last Pharo said yes, you may go.
Who, after Pharo changed his mind and pursued after Israel, God used to cross the part the waters and cross on dry land.
David?
The great and mighty King David.
Who God raised up from just a little shepherd boy.
Who God used to slay the Giant.
Who would become a great and mighty warrior and lead the Children of Israel through many victories.
Who in spite of His sin became the man after God’s own heart.
Who looks around at his Kingdom and says “I am living in a house of Cedar, but the Ark of God stays in a tent.
David realizes one day that he is living high on the hog. But the Ark of the Covenant, is kept in a tent. They call it a tabernacle, but in David’s mind that just a glorified name for a tent.
2 Samuel 7:1–17 (ESV)
Now when the king lived in his house and the Lord had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies, the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent.” And Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you.”
But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, “Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord: Would you build me a house to dwell in? I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent for my dwelling. In all places where I have moved with all the people of Israel, did I speak a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?” ’ Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people Israel. And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly, from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house. When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’ ” In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David.
I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son.
They were hoping for this guy.
They were hoping for a Messiah
A future deliverer and savior who would rescue his people and usher in a time of prosperity and blessing.
You see, at the time of Christ Israel was not longer the great nation they once were. David’s son Solomon built a great temple and they experienced a time of prosperity for a season.
But they were eventually defeated, the temple was destroyed by the Babylonians, and they were now scatter and divided. No longer a great nation. No longer experiencing the the promise of God.
God had promised that through David’s descendants, his throne would never end.
Jeremiah 33:14–26 (ESV)
“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David, and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will dwell securely. And this is the name by which it will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’
“For thus says the Lord: David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel, and the Levitical priests shall never lack a man in my presence to offer burnt offerings, to burn grain offerings, and to make sacrifices forever.”
They were expecting a great leader who would restore Israel’s freedom, integrity, reign, and rule.
HOWEVER
They were not expecting the perfect, spotless lamb of God, who would save his people from their sins.
2 Samuel 7:14–15 ESV
I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you.
They were expecting a man. A man just like Abraham, Issac, and Jacob. A man like David. A man who God would use in spite of his iniquity.
They were expecting someone whom God would use to do great and mighty things.
They were not expecting that he would be perfect. Abraham, Issac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, David, Solomon, they all had their faults, they all sinned against God.
These disciples were expecting a man like that. A man who God would use, in spite of all his faults, to save his people, bring them into a land of prosperity and blessing.
They were not expecting the Son of the Living God, who speaks to the wind and the waves, and they obey.
They were not expecting the one who would do away with the old sacrificial system of Atonement with God, in which sins were paid for with the sacrifice of an innocent lamb, by being the innocent lamb and giving himself as a sacrifice for the sins of Israel and the sins of the world.
Little did they know, that the iniquity that He, the messiah, would be punished for would be theirs.
Little did they know that this great Kingdom they were expecting would not be any earthly kingdom like Egypt, and Babylon, and Rome.
It would be God’s kingdom of peace, justice, hope, faith, and love and forgiveness of sins.

Who do you say that Jesus is?

Jesus asked his disciples once. Who do people say that I am?
Mark 8:27–28 ESV
And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” And they told him, “John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.”
Mark 8:29 ESV
And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.”
When we hear Peter say Christ, we say WOW, Peter Got it.
But he didn’t get it.
The word Christ to Peter is simply a greek word for Messiah.
A future deliverer and savior who would rescue his people and usher in a time of prosperity and blessing.
That is who they thought Jesus was.
They were expecting a savior who would usher in a time a prosperity and blessing.
They never got until after the Crucifixion, burial, and resurrection from the grave.

Who do you say that Jesus is?

Is he your savior who you are expecting to usher in a time of prosperity and blessing?
Is he the one who is going to make all your problems go away.
Or is he the one who gave his life on the Cross of Calvary for your sin?
Is Jesus your messiah who you are waiting to give you prosperity and blessing, or is Jesus your messiah who became the spotless, sin bearing lamb of God.
We don’t need to belabor sin this morning. We all know we have. We all know that we are sinful creatures. We know that our sin separates us from God and each other.
What we sometimes fail to remember is that the Son of God, the Messiah, this Jesus who speaks, and the wind and the waves obey, could have spoken his way off of the the cross.
He could have called ten thousand angels.
He could have spoken and time and space could have been frozen for all eternity.
Instead, he chose, to spread out his hands, be nailed to a cross, and give his life, for the sins of the world.

I ask you this morning, about this Jesus who the wind and seas obey, who is he to you?
