Introduction

Father’s Day is coming up so we are going to talk about a specific father in the Bible. Who would you guess?
-
David!
David is not really known for being a father. In fact some would even say that he wasn’t a very good father.
Here’s some quick facts about David just to quickly remind us about some of the things he accomplished and who he was:

1. David was from the tribe of Judah

2. David was Ruth and Boaz’s great grandson

3. David was the youngest of seven sons (or he had seven brothers)

4. David was from Bethlehem

5. David was God’s “anointed one”

6. David was a shepherd

7. David was a musician

8. David was a giant slayer

9. David was a great warrior

10. David was Israel’s greatest king

11. David committed adultery with Bathsheba

12. David plotted to have Uriah killed

13. David was a man after God’s own heart

14. David lived around 1,000 BC

15. David had (at least) eight wives

16. David wrote about half the Book of Psalms

An imperfect messiah - It’s fitting that David is such a prominent figure in the Old Testament. Because as an imperfect human, anointed by God to save and rule his people, David lays the foundation for Jesus Christ—the only sinless human, whom God would use to save and rule all of humanity.

So tonight we are going to talk about David as a Father. That being said, I want to warn you. The story we are going to look at is not an easy story to read or listen to. However, this is God’s word, and in 2 Timothy 3:16 the bible tells us that all Scripture is profitable. God included these difficult stories in his word for a reason. We shouldn’t ignore these stories just because they are difficult, but we should read them and study them to gain knowledge and wisdom. This is a serious story about a serious sin, and so we all need to be mature about it so we can learn from it.
Proverbs 14:9 KJV 1900
Fools make a mock at sin: But among the righteous there is favour.

2 Samuel 13:1–22 KJV 1900
And it came to pass after this, that Absalom the son of David had a fair sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her. And Amnon was so vexed, that he fell sick for his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin; and Amnon thought it hard for him to do any thing to her. But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s brother: and Jonadab was a very subtil man. And he said unto him, Why art thou, being the king’s son, lean from day to day? wilt thou not tell me? And Amnon said unto him, I love Tamar, my brother Absalom’s sister. And Jonadab said unto him, Lay thee down on thy bed, and make thyself sick: and when thy father cometh to see thee, say unto him, I pray thee, let my sister Tamar come, and give me meat, and dress the meat in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it at her hand. So Amnon lay down, and made himself sick: and when the king was come to see him, Amnon said unto the king, I pray thee, let Tamar my sister come, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat at her hand. Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, Go now to thy brother Amnon’s house, and dress him meat. So Tamar went to her brother Amnon’s house; and he was laid down. And she took flour, and kneaded it, and made cakes in his sight, and did bake the cakes. And she took a pan, and poured them out before him; but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, Have out all men from me. And they went out every man from him. And Amnon said unto Tamar, Bring the meat into the chamber, that I may eat of thine hand. And Tamar took the cakes which she had made, and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother. And when she had brought them unto him to eat, he took hold of her, and said unto her, Come lie with me, my sister. And she answered him, Nay, my brother, do not force me; for no such thing ought to be done in Israel: do not thou this folly. And I, whither shall I cause my shame to go? and as for thee, thou shalt be as one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, I pray thee, speak unto the king; for he will not withhold me from thee. Howbeit he would not hearken unto her voice: but, being stronger than she, forced her, and lay with her. Then Amnon hated her exceedingly; so that the hatred wherewith he hated her was greater than the love wherewith he had loved her. And Amnon said unto her, Arise, be gone. And she said unto him, There is no cause: this evil in sending me away is greater than the other that thou didst unto me. But he would not hearken unto her. Then he called his servant that ministered unto him, and said, Put now this woman out from me, and bolt the door after her. And she had a garment of divers colours upon her: for with such robes were the king’s daughters that were virgins apparelled. Then his servant brought her out, and bolted the door after her. And Tamar put ashes on her head, and rent her garment of divers colours that was on her, and laid her hand on her head, and went on crying. And Absalom her brother said unto her, Hath Amnon thy brother been with thee? but hold now thy peace, my sister: he is thy brother; regard not this thing. So Tamar remained desolate in her brother Absalom’s house. But when king David heard of all these things, he was very wroth. And Absalom spake unto his brother Amnon neither good nor bad: for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar.
David failed at fatherhood. How could he have let this happen, his own son rape his daughter?
In the previous chapter is when we see David being confronted by Nathan because of his sin with Bathsheba and killing her husband. And so because he is just plain busy with life and the drama that he involved himself in, he doesn’t notice what’s going on.
**I was mowing my grass sunday night, (ENERGY AND DETAILS)
… busy working didn’t notice the beauty of the sunset… when we get busy we miss the beauty of God
… While I was busy working I also didn’t notice a large root branch thing and ran right over that, I was so busy i didn’t notice the problem that was right in front of me.
David saw God’s beauty in this situation for a moment, but then forgot about it and was so focused on himself and his wife that he forgot about the rest of his family. The beauty was the fact that he would be able to see his son one day.
2 Samuel 12:23 KJV 1900
But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.
David missed God’s beauty but he also missed Satans traps. David missed it, he didn’t notice the problem that was right in front of him because he was so consumed with himself and his own personal problems.
Amnon, his son just watched dad do all of these things. Kids mimic what they see, especially their parents right. Monkey see monkey do. And so David didn’t realize, in the midst of his busyness, that he was being an example to Amnon, that Amnon would replicate what he saw. So Amnon just saw dad see something he wanted and take it, so Amnon thought well I can too.
So Satan was also working during all of that time, tempting and tearing down David and his family. Satan also works in the midst of your busyness. Take notice.
Ephesians 5:15–16 KJV 1900
See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
So dont get so busy that you miss Gods beauty and don’t get so busy that you miss Satan’s traps
So after Amnon rapes Tamar, David is extremely angry. Not only is David angry, but Absalom, who is Amnon and Tamar’s brother is also angry, and he ends up killing Amnon.
Just a terrible story that showcases the imperfections of our human nature, but it really shows how Christ is the complete perfection of God in human nature.

It’s fitting that David is such a prominent figure in the Old Testament. Because as an imperfect human, anointed by God to save and rule his people, David lays the foundation for Jesus Christ—the only sinless human, whom God would use to save and rule all of humanity.

David is the imperfect father that shows us how perfect of a Father our God is.
1 John 3:1–3 KJV 1900
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
God is your heavenly Father who created you, loves you, cares about you, is invested in you, and will never turn His back on you. There is nothing that you can do to change the way that God loves you- good or bad. There’s no terrible sins that you can do that will make God love you any less and there’s no perfect good deeds that you can do that will make God love you any more. He loves you perfectly and infinitely.
Hebrews 13:5 KJV 1900
Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
John 10:28 KJV 1900
And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
David was a hero of the faith, but he still made mistakes, and his mistakes point us to the true hero of the faith, and that is Jesus Christ.
So here is what you need to take with you, here’s the application: Don’t get so busy that you miss Gods beauty and don’t get so busy that you miss Satan’s traps. Look for God’s beauty and look out for Satan’s traps
