And on that day, when even was come, he saith unto them, Let us go over unto the other side. And leaving the multitude, they take him with them, even as he was, in the boat. And other boats were with him. And there ariseth a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the boat, insomuch that the boat was now filling. And he himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion: and they awake him, and say unto him, Teacher, carest thou not that we perish? And he awoke, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are ye fearful? have ye not yet faith? And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?
MARK’S GOSPEL IS A TIMELESS -PROFOUND STORY of the eminent AUTHORITY of Jesus Christ.
The Markan text calls us to remembrance -as it takes the reader to the scene at the River of Galilee:
The setting is a familiar one with THE followers of Jesus -His chosen twelve. DISCIPLES-comprised of skilled fisherman; just to name a few Simon known as Peter, the Zebedees John and James, Nathaniel the doubter and Judas Ischariot -the notorious one who betrayed Jesus .
THIS DIVINE STORY -captures --THESE (chosen 12) aboard a boat setting sail to the other side when a tremendous storm arose. Now this is no ordinary storm…the twelve were frightened that they couldn’t imagine how Jesus could sleep while all this was going on.
But even as the reader tries to put the context of this pericope in balance, something JUST doesn’t sit right…are these understudies of Jesus -not TRAINED FISHERMEN?
ON THIS FATHER’S Day-I thought how fitting it would be to honor the men of St John’s -the fathers- with a story of our forefathers…THE MEN FROM GALILEE—THE MEN -men whose walk with Jesus -was their first test of faith over fear…A TEST THAT WOULD PROVE 11 OF THEM TO BE THE BOLD PROFESSORS OF THE FAITH...and though we might HAVE MISTAKEN---THE LENGTH AND STRENGTH AND DEPTH OF THEIR FAITH…THEY ROSE TO THE OCCASION IN ANTIQUITY TO BOLDLY PROCLAIM THAT JESUS CHRIST IS LORD…YET THEN DID IT NOT SEEM THAT -- Jesus—SOUNDED LIKE A FATHER WHO HAD LOST HIS PATIENCE WHEN HE SCOLDED THEM SAYING-…OH YEA OF LITTLE FAITH-
FOR THE SONG WRITER WROTE-”AND IF THE WINDS DON’T CEASE AND IF THE STORMS DON’T KEEP BLOWING IN YOUR LIFE…MY SOUL IS ANCHORED IN THE LORD.
PSALM 9:10 - THE FEAR OF THE LORD IS THE BEGINNING OF WISDOM.
twelve MEN----NO DOUBT UNDERSTOOD WHAT SOLOMON MEANT WHEN HE PENNED---IN PROV. 29: 25--THE FEAR OF THE LORD IS THE FOUNDATION OF LIFE.
FOR THE FEAR OF MAN BRINGETH A SNARE-BUT WHO SO PUTTETH HIS TRUST IN THE LORD ---SHALL BE SAFE.
THESE 12 MEN WHO SACRIFICED THEIR ALL--
AND WHAT WAS GAINED BY THAT DAY WITH JESUS ON THE SMALL BOAT WAS UNCONDITIONAL LOVE. JESUS TRUSTED THEM-AND GRACED THEM TO KNOW HIM - IN BOTH HIS HUMANNESS AND HEAVENLY PROVIDENCE-
THE LORD TOOK HIS THESE GREAT UNDERSTUDIES...UNDER HIS WINGS…OF PROTECTION AND GUIDED THEM TO THE SAFETY OF THE SHORE.
MY FRIENDS —PUSHING OUT INTO THE DEEP---IS A LIFE LESSON---THAT TOGETHER THEY MIGHT MEET ON THAT BEAUTIFUL SHORE---A SHORE WHERE FAITH HONORS FAITH...
THIS WASN’T A FLUFFY TALE OF -WOE IS ME—OR A PROSPERITY MESSAGE ---WHERE YOU ARE PROMISED IF YOU SOW INTO THIS MINISTRY---A GREAT REWARD…SO LARGE THAT YOU CAN RETIRE ON IT…NO—NO THAT’S NOT WHO WE ARE...
WE RELY ON THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT…TO LEAD YOU AND BLESS ---and KEEP YOU --THAT WHAT IS PREACHED AND TAUGHT HERE—IS BIBLE BASED AND BIBLICAL STRONG…SHARPER THAN A TWO EDGE SWORD THAT CUTS AWAY—AT FALSE PROPHECY AND RENDERS THE DEVIL HELPLESS —IF HE SHOULD RAISE HIS UGLY HEAD TO STIR YOU INTO THAT DARK ABYSS—CALLED HELL.
WE JOIN YOU—OUR FATHER’S IN PRAYER---THAT WHEN YOU PUSH OUT INTO THE DEEP---YOU WILL NOT BE MISLED OR TORMENTED—BUT BE OFFERED THE SOLACE —THE STRENGTH---THE LOVING KINDNESS—THE HEBREW HESID...
THAT IF THE STORMS DON’T CEASE ---AND IF THE BILLOWS DON’T STOP RAGING IN YOUR LIFE…THAT YOUR SOUL WILL BE ANCHORED IN THE LORD............................
JESUS SAID: RECORDED IN MATTHEW 5:1
BLESSED ARE THE MEEK; FOR THEY SHALL INHERIT THE EARTH, BLESSED ARE THEY THAT HUNGER AND THIRST AFTER RIGHTEOUSNESS; FOR THEY SHALL BE FILLED AND BLESSED ARE THE MERCIFUL FOR THEY SHALL OBTAIN MERCY.
THIS WORD AUTHORITY----IS LIKE A TWO EDGE SWORD…IT CAN OFFER BOTH A GOOD AND BAD CONSEQUENCE.
REV. 1:16 “IN HIS RIGHT HAND HE HELD SEVEN STARS, AND COMING OUT OF HIS MOUTH WAS A SHARP DOUBLE EDGE SWORD”
WHEN THE WORD OF GOD —IS USED WITH AUTHORITY—IT BRINGS WITH IT RIGHTEOUSNESS —RIGHT LIVING—RIGHT RESPECT FOR ALL OF MANKIND AND A BEAUTY THAT EXUDES GODLINESS..
IT TOOK A NONJEW —AN OUTSIDER-THE ROMAN CENTURION —TO RECOGNIZE …WHO JESUS WAS.
NOT A CRIMINAL--- BUT THE KING
SOME TIME WE ARE SO CLOUDED BY EMPTY THOUGHTS OF PETTINESS -JEALOUSY AND PRIDE…BLOCKING --THE VIEW TO SEE OUT AND OVER THE DEEP ---
THIS IS WHEN I ADVISE YOU TO ---ALWAYS ---KEEP A BOTTLE OF WINDEX IN THE TRUNK…PULL YOUR CAR OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD—SAFELY SPRAY A LITTLE ON YOUR WINDSHELD AND BACK---LET THE LORD ANOINT THAT BOTTLE TO SEE THE WAY---CLEAR---IN THAT HE CAN —PUT A CLEARER VIEW —TO LIGHTEN YOUR LOAD, CLEAR THE PATH—AND STIR YOU AWAY FROM THE NEGATIVITY---THE DRAMA---THAT WILL CLOUD YOUR VIEW ---IF YOU LET IT!
MY PRAYER TO YOU OUR FATHERS IS THAT YOU KNOW THE MEASURE OF YOUR STRENGTH.
DON’T MAKE PROMISES YOU CANNOT KEEP —EVERY NOW AND AGAIN....YOU MIGHT HAVE TO TURN YOUR SUPERMAN T SHIRT—INSIDE OUT
MY FRIENDS... THIS IS THE DAY THAT THE LORD HAS MADE…AND WE SHALL REJOICE AND BE GLAD IN IT...
FEEL THE LOVE MY FRIENDS: THIS GOSPEL—THIS BIBLE —THIS HOLY WORD—COMES BOTH WITH SOME TRUTH AND CONSEQUENCES-
I DON’T KNOW IF WE HAVE SOME SHY GUYS--- GUYS —HANGING ON THE FENCE— UNWILLING TO ADMIT…WHAT OTHERS GUYS BOLDLY PROCLAIM…THAT SINCE I MET JESUS....SINCE HE CLEANSED AND MADE ME WHOLE…
I WILL EVER CEASE TO TRUST HIM…I’LL SHOUT IT WHILE ETERNITY ROLLS....
PSALM 28:7 THE LORD IS MY STRENGTH AND MY SALVATION…MY HEART TRUST IN HIM AND HE HELPS ME. .
BELOVED…IN CHRIST JESUS—THE WINDS AND WAVES MAY KEEP ROARING IN YOUR LIFE…BUT LET YOUR SOUL BE ANCHORED IN THE LORD.
“WHAT IS MAN THAT THE LORD IS NOT MINDFUL OF HIM”...
AS I CLOSE:
MARK 3:14 “HE APPOINTED THEM TO BE WITH HIM"
JESUS IS CALLING---CALLING OH SINNERS COME HOME.
HIS CALL TO COME ON BOARD…TAKE THE HELM —AND GUIDE THIS SHIP TO SAFE SHORES
BE A PART OF A MINISTRY--- BRING YE ALL THE AND YOUR GIFTS TO THE STOREHOUSE…AND IN THIS COMMANDMENT IS PEACE---ABUNDANT PEACE—AND A BLESSING THAT MALACHI 3 - YOU CANNOT HOLD WITH BOTH HANDS.IM WITH FEAR AND TREMBLING…FOR HE IS SENDING YOU-OUT INTO UNCHARTED WATERS, NEIGHBORHOODS WHERE THERE IS SO MUCH BROKENNESS-
OUR YOUNG PEOPLE ARE -SEARCHING---THERE IS A CATEGORY OF “NONES”—PEOPLE WHO HAVE EITHER LOST FAITH OR NEVER HAD ANY FAITH--FATHERS HAVE THEIR HANDS FULL.
BUT THE WORD OF GOD SAYS-THEY THAT WAIT UPON THE LORD. SHALL RENEW THEIR STRENGTH
SHALL RUN AND NOT BE WEARY —SHALL WALK AND NOT FAINT…WAIT —I SAY ON THE LORD.
I APPLAUD YOU—THIS MORNING—NOT JUST ON FATHER’S DAY, BUT ALL THE DAYS OF YOUR LIVES.
MAY YOU BE BLESSED GOING OUT AND BLESSED COMING IN.
EVERY DAY —OF YOUR LIFE AS YOU WALK IN THE LIGHT OF THE LORD. AMEN
