Genesis 1:27

Introduction

This morning we considered the problems that we see around us.
Tonight we will look at some Biblical solutions.

Gender Norms

I think we all understand that gender is a created distinction (Gen. 1:27).
Some norms are roles that are commanded by God (1 Cor. 11:3).
Other norms are conditioned on the society we live it (Deut. 22:5; 1 Cor. 11:14-15).
Then there are norms that can cross gender boundaries.
Some characteristics are stronger in each gender (1 Cor. 16:13; 1 Thess. 2:7).
Both of these passages illustrate that these types of characteristics can be associated with a gender without being exclusive to those genders.
There are also negative characteristics that are more likely to affect each gender (1 Tim. 3:11; 1 Thess. 4:3-6).
They know these exist and accept them when they are “transitioning” from one stereotype to another.

Compassionate Clarity

Physical abnormalities are always a part of these discussions.
These abnormalities were not in the garden (Gen. 1:27).
The Bible speaks plainly about them (Lev. 21:16-24).
Just because there are defects that keep someone from natural function doesn’t destroy natural function (1 Tim. 2:15).
There are also abnormalities of the mind and we want to bring those into harmony with God whenever possible (2 Cor. 10:5).
The Bible is unwilling to bend reality for feelings and so should we be.

Seeking the Lost

Just because people are caught up in these patterns of deception doesn’t mean they want to be (Lk. 7:36-39).
We aren’t trying to be offensive when we speak the truth (Col. 4:5-6).
But we need to see the difference between refugees and apostles (Mk. 2:17).

Conclusion

How are you going to react when you are sharing a cubicle or are put on a project at school with a transgendered person.
I hope you will act with all the willingness to display God’s compassion and integrity at all times.
If you are struggling with answering any of these questions, I want you to know that these are conversations that can be had.
You may have more questions than can possibly be answered in such a short amount of time.
Even if you have questions about these things in your own life. If you are gender confused. The Bible is not silent to your questions. There are answers for your questions.
He calls us all to set down our worldly focussed identities and put on ones that glorify Him.
That is where our greatest joy lies.
