5 And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the rules that I speak in your hearing today, and you shall learn them and be careful to do them. 2 The Lord our God made a covenant with us in Horeb. 3 Not with our fathers did the Lord make this covenant, but with us, who are all of us here alive today. 4 The Lord spoke with you face to face at the mountain, out of the midst of the fire, 5 while I stood between the Lord and you at that time, to declare to you the word of the Lord. For you were afraid because of the fire, and you did not go up into the mountain. He said:

6 “ ‘I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

7 “ ‘You shall have no other gods before me.

28 “And the Lord heard your words, when you spoke to me. And the Lord said to me, ‘I have heard the words of this people, which they have spoken to you. They are right in all that they have spoken. 29 Oh that they had such a heart as this always, to fear me and to keep all my commandments, that it might go well with them and with their descendants forever! 30 Go and say to them, “Return to your tents.” 31 But you, stand here by me, and I will tell you the whole commandment and the statutes and the rules that you shall teach them, that they may do them in the land that I am giving them to possess.’ 32 You shall be careful therefore to do as the Lord your God has commanded you. You shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. 33 You shall walk in all the way that the Lord your God has commanded you, that you may live, and that it may go well with you, and that you may live long in the land that you shall possess.

LET THE LORD ADD HIS BLESSING TO THIS READING OF HIS WORD
I chose this text this morning because it’s the second reading of the law of God.
And first John chapter 5 is going to be referencing the law of God And that if we love God we will keep his commandments.
let us now turn to the book of 1 John chapter 5:1-5.

Hear now the very Word of God
 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. 4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

1 John 5:1-5 Those who Believe Overcome the World

Point 1 Vs. 1 Believing and Loving Jesus Christ

5 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him.
Here John repeats one of the fundamental truths of Christianity.
That we must believe in Christ alone if we are to be born of God.
You cannot believe in a false deity and be born of God
So if you think there are multiple ways that human beings may be born of God then John disagrees with you.
John is restating the exclusivity of believing in Jesus Christ as a requirement to be born again.
So you cannot believe in Buddha and be Born of God.
You can’t put your faith in Jehovah alone as the Jehovah witness’s do and be born of God.
You can’t believe in Allah and be born of God.
Here the Christian is,
Described by his faith; he that believes that Jesus is the Christ—
that he is the Messiah and the prince,
that he is the Son of God by nature and office,
that he is the chief of all the anointed world,
chief of all the priests,
prophets, and kings,
And Jesus is perfectly prepared and furnished for the whole work of the eternal salvation.
And he is Born of God that believes in Jesus.
You now have a new nature that springs from this belief.
You now care about the things of God and who he is.
Becasue you have been adopted by him
into the family of God.
You were once an enemy of God but now you are his adopted son or daughter.
Hence the only true way of believing is when we direct our minds to him.
Besides, to believe that he is the Christ,
is to believe all those things which have been promised to us since the beginning of time when God covenanted with man and promised the coming Messiah.
But then John brings this back to the practical application of what someone that believes in Jesus looks like to God
But more specifically how they show love for the brothers and sisters in Christ.
vs 1 says

and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him

A sign of a believer in Jesus is that they will have a love for those in the church.
So what does this look like?
Well you will see to the needs of those around you in the church when they need help.
You will come along side them when they are in error and gently try to point them to the truth of scripture that they are erring on.
What you should not do
is harbor anger or faults against your brother or sister.
You might ask how would I do that?
Well if you have something against your brother or sister for lets say a year and you say nothing to them.
and you let them waller in their sin.
And then in a bout of anger you bring up these offenses a year later or what ever the extended amount of time it is.
and what do you think the result might be?
anger
hostility
schock.
And maybe even a sinful reaction to your pent up hostility to your brother or sister.
Becasue your correction was not done out of love but out of hostility and pent up anger.
Rather we love our brothers and sisters by coming before them in humility and soon so they are not floundering in their sin for a long time.
Matthew 18:15

15 “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother.

So we go to them quickly tell him the fault and we will have gained our brother and sister.
Proverbs 27:5-6

Better is open rebuke than hidden love.6  Faithful are the wounds of a friend; profuse are the kisses of an enemy.
If you love hose born of God you are open and honest with them.
Luke 17:3-4
English Standard Version (Chapter 17)
3 Pay attention to yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him, 4 and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.”
So loving your brother means forgiving him when he repents even if its a repeated offense.
Galatians 6:1-3

6 Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. 3 For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

We must show love
And if we love the Father as John says than we are spiritual
And God commands us to be gentle and to bear this burden of correcting each other in love.
Then we are fulfilling the law of Christ
And if this is done in humility Praise God.
Becasue then we are showing this love like the Father shows to us because of our belief in the Lord Jesus Christ who has redeemed us.
When we show this loving correction to others it should remind us of the finished work of Jesus Christ.
The one who comes along us sinful redeemed children of God.
And gently corrects us not just once or twice but continually Throughout our lives.
And Christ continually makes intercession for us as our priest.
According to the book of Hebrews chapter 2, 7 and 9 and the WSC question 25

Question 25

How doth Christ execute the office of a priest?

Christ executeth the office of a priest, in his once offering up of himself a sacrifice to satisfy divine justice, (Heb. 9:14,28) and reconcile us to God; (Heb. 2:17) and in making continual intercession for us. (Heb. 7:24–25)

So we show love for our brothers and sisters if we are born again as Christ shows love to us.
John shows us,
1. How we may discern the truth, or the true evangelical nature of our love to the regenerate.
It must ME ROOTED or grounded in our love to God, whose children we are.
v. 2. Our love to them appears to be sound and genuine when we love them not merely because of their standing in society
It shouldn't matter if they are rich, or wise, or kind to us, or of our own denomination or reformed.
Rather we are to love them because they are God’s children,
his grace appears in them,
his image is upon them,
because they have the spirit of God
So we should see and display that love to our brothers and sisters as the children of God
This Love should be a natural outworking of our faith in Jesus because we are adopted brethren of the Lord Jesus.

Point 2 Verses. 2-3 Loving your Brother and the Law of God.

By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.
We already know that love for God is expressed in keeping his commandments
So it is natural that God would point us to his commandments becasue they are the very thing redeemed men a women need to understand in order to love their brothers and sisters in the faith.
Children and Adults honor your father and your mother.
Adults and children don’t take the name of God in vein.
Adults don’t commit adultery but rather uphold the vows of your marriage to each other.
Adults and children keep the Sabbath.
Don’t Murder rather defend life to preserve it.
Don’t Steal. Work hard at your jobs and the labor God has called you too.
Don’t lie be a person who values the truth and tells the truth.
Don’t Covet you neighbors wife or anything that is your neighbors.
Don’t make or keep carved images that you worship.
Physical images or ones made by thinking incorrectly about who God is.
Only worship the one true and living God who is triune and who is three persons Father Son and Holy spirt.
At the end of verse 3 John tells us that God’s law is not burdensome.
Why does he tell us that the very law of God we struggle to obey every day of our life is not budensome?
Becasue even thought you struggle even though you can’t keep the law of God perfectly.
The Lord Jesus kept it perfectly for you
The Lord Jesus has overcome the world.
And you who he redeemed are born of the Lord Jesus.
And so even though we don’t obey perfectly we have a genuine desire and love to the one who redeemed us and-overcame the world.
So we out of grateful hearts desire to please our heavenly father.
and his commandments are thereby made easy and pleasant to us.
The lover of God says, with the psalmist
I will run in the way of your commandments when you enlarge my heart! psalm 119:32
But John also says they are not burdensme because the commandments are not burdensome.
This has been added,
Becasue sometimes difficulties arise in our lives
And we shouldn't let the difficulties of the flesh lessen our zeal for obeying God.
Is it burdensome to come here this morning on the Lords Day?
Maybe, it depends on your frame of mind.
you must get up and drive to church in the morning?
Corale and Rangle your children who might not want to cooperate in there younger years with putting there close on.
Eating there breakfast
Getting in the car on-time
But the benefits that you receive when you arrive
Far outweigh the struggle with the flesh.
The spiritual food from the reading and preaching of the Word of God.
The fellowship you enjoy with fellow believers.
So we should with a cheerful mind continue in our godly pursuit to live a godly and holy life,
And let us not grow weary,
The strength of the spirit of God and the Word of God is adequate on our journey as Pilgrims on this current world.
And the Sabbath and the Law of God in its entirety are not burdensome to those who have faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ who has redeemed them and called them and who will keep them.
So what is the result and effect of regeneration—
Its an intellectual spiritual conquest of this world:
And so John says whosoever is born of God, overcomes the world, in Verse 4
which brings me to my 3rd point of verses 4-5.

Point 3 Verses 4-5 We Overcome the World by Faith in Jesus Christ

v. 4. We that are born of God are born consequently for another world.
We have a new temper and disposition that tend to a higher and better world;
and we are equipped with such weapons,
like the Word of God,
the spirit of God,
and a converted heart whereby we can repel and conquer this current age in and thought Jesus Christ.
through faith in Jesus.
Because only those that are under the condemnation of the law of God will reject the instructions and commands of God.
So if you don’t know Jesus Christ
If his law seems burdensome to you.
If you HISS or Reject the counsel of other believers when they speak of the Sabbath
Being faithful in attending the worship service.
Marital fidelity
Catechizing your children.
Reading the Word of God faithfully individually.
And as a family during family worship.
Not using profanity which is a violation of the Third commandment.
A good example of a way to look at a detailed analysis of the comandments is the Westminster Larger Catechism.
An example of the Third commandment is

Question 113What are the sins forbidden in the third commandment?The sins forbidden in the third commandment are, the not using of God’ s name as is required; (Mal. 2:2) and the abuse of it in an ignorant, (Acts 17:23) vain, (Prov. 30:9) irreverent, profane, (Mal. 1:6–7,12, Mal. 3:14) superstitious (1 Sam. 4:3–5, Jer. 7:4,9–10,14,31, Col. 2:20–22) or wicked mentioning or otherwise using his titles, attributes, (2 Kings 18:30,35, Exod. 5:2, Ps. 139:20) ordinances, (Ps. 50:16–17) or works, (Isa. 5:12) by blasphemy, (2 Kings 19:22, Lev. 24:11) perjury; (Zech. 5:4, Zech. 8:17) all sinful cursings
If you have trouble with the Westminster Larger Catechism specifically the exposition of How we are to obey and adhere to God’s commands.
If this seems Burdensome to you
Then maybe you think your keeping his commandments because of your great strength or your superior morality.
Well then you would be a Pharisee.
Also if you think these commands are Burdensome or you despise the Law of God
and make up such excuses as that we are not held to this standard of law keeping.
We are new testament believers.
All the saints in the Old Testament were held to a different standard.
And a New Testament Christian is not held to the same standard because of Christ.
Brothers and Sisters Old or New Testament Christians are all held to the same law given on mount Sinai to Moses
God is the same Yesterday Today and forevermore.
If these thoughts ever run through your mind.
If you believe any of the falsities or lies in which I just pointed out to you.
Then maybe you have put your trust in something other than the finished work of Christ.
Becasue you can’t overcome this World and the devil on your own.
You can’t keep the law of God on your own.
And you can’t think rightly about how you are to keep his commandments and love you Brother on your own.
John says in verses 4-5

4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

Only those who are Born of God Overcome this World.
All the rest will Perish.
Only those who have Faith will Over come the World.
The Faithless will Perish.
All those Who have Love for the brethren will overcome the World.
Those who hate their brothers and Sisters will not overcome the World.
But this Faith is not an empty Faith
Those who are Born of God have a specific Faith
John refers to it as OUR Faith.
And OUR FAITH is the Faith that rest and believes and obeys in the one who has given us life.
No One overcomes the World unless they believe that Jesus is the Son of God.
Jesus the second person of the trinity
Jesus the Word of God.
Jesus the Law of God.
Jesus the God man who lived a perfect life.
Obeyed all Gods righteous requirements on our behalf.
Jesus the Messiah
Our deliverer
Our Anointed one.
The one that the Law and the prophets all spoke of.
Jesus the one that “Those who believe in and Love will overcome this World through.
Let Us Pray
CLOSING PRAYER
Father I pray that today your people have heard what the Gospel and the Perfect Love of God is.
What Overcomes are called to in this life.
Help us to apply this in our walk with you and with our brothers and Sisters in Christ.
Help us to show the Love of Christ to others in sharing your Word and Gospel Call to Salvation with this lost and this dying world.
Help us to warn them of the final judgement.
And help us to show love to them not just in word but in deed also.
And we pray in Jesus Christ name.
