1  My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him.
2  He alone is my rock and my salvation, he is my fortress; I will never be shaken.
3  How long will you assault a man?
Would all of you throw him down this leaning wall, this tottering fence?
4  They fully intend to topple him from his lofty place; they take delight in lies.
With their mouths, they bless, but in their hearts they curse.
5  Find rest, O my soul, in God alone,
my hope comes from him.
6  He alone is my rock and my salvation, he is my fortress; I will not be shaken.
7  My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge.
8 Trust in him at all times, O people;
pour out your hearts to him; for
God is our refuge.
9  Lowborn men are but a breath;
the high born are but a lie;
if weighed on a balance, they are nothing; together they are only a breath.
10 Do not trust in extortion; or take pride in stolen goods;
though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them.
11 One thing God has spoken; two things have I heard: that you, O God are strong, and that you, O Lord, are loving.
12  Surely you will reward each person according to what he has done.
LET US PRAY
Prayer of Confession and Repentance
Be gracious to us, O God, according to your love.
According to your abundant mercies,
blot out our transgressions.
Wash us thoroughly from our iniquities,
and from our sins cleanse us.
Create a clean heart in us, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within us.
Do not cast us away from your presence,
and sustain us with your spirit.
We know the sacrifices you require are a broken spirit;
and broken and contrite heart,
And we thank you for you Son Jesus in which you have
made possible for your people to approach you and have
communion with you Father
In Christ Name Amen.
Assurance of Pardon……………...……..………………... Hebrews 8:10-12
10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel
after those days, declares the Lord:
I will put my laws into their minds,
and write them on their hearts,
and I will be their God,
and they shall be my people.
11  And they shall not teach, each one his neighbor
and each one his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’
for they shall all know me,
from the least of them to the greatest.
12  For I will be merciful toward their iniquities,
and I will remember their sins no more.”

Hear Now the Very Word of God

The LORD Is Holy

19 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them, You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy. 3 Every one of you shall revere his mother and his father, and you shall keep my Sabbaths: I am the Lord your God. 4 Do not turn to idols or make for yourselves any gods of cast metal: I am the Lord your God.

5 “When you offer a sacrifice of peace offerings to the Lord, you shall offer it so that you may be accepted. 6 It shall be eaten the same day you offer it or on the day after, and anything left over until the third day shall be burned up with fire. 7 If it is eaten at all on the third day, it is tainted; it will not be accepted, 8 and everyone who eats it shall bear his iniquity, because he has profaned what is holy to the Lord, and that person shall be cut off from his people.

Love Your Neighbor as Yourself

9 “When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field right up to its edge, neither shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest. 10 And you shall not strip your vineyard bare, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am the Lord your God.

11 “You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; you shall not lie to one another. 12 You shall not swear by my name falsely, and so profane the name of your God: I am the Lord.

13 “You shall not oppress your neighbor or rob him. The wages of a hired worker shall not remain with you all night until the morning. 14 You shall not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block before the blind, but you shall fear your God: I am the Lord.

15 “You shall do no injustice in court. You shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor. 16 You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not stand up against the life of your neighbor: I am the Lord.

17 “You shall not hate your brother in your heart, but you shall reason frankly with your neighbor, lest you incur sin because of him. 18 You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.

You Shall Keep My Statutes

19 “You shall keep my statutes. You shall not let your cattle breed with a different kind. You shall not sow your field with two kinds of seed, nor shall you wear a garment of cloth made of two kinds of material.

20 “If a man lies sexually with a woman who is a slave, assigned to another man and not yet ransomed or given her freedom, a distinction shall be made. They shall not be put to death, because she was not free; 21 but he shall bring his compensation to the Lord, to the entrance of the tent of meeting, a ram for a guilt offering. 22 And the priest shall make atonement for him with the ram of the guilt offering before the Lord for his sin that he has committed, and he shall be forgiven for the sin that he has committed.

23 “When you come into the land and plant any kind of tree for food, then you shall regard its fruit as forbidden. Three years it shall be forbidden to you; it must not be eaten. 24 And in the fourth year all its fruit shall be holy, an offering of praise to the Lord. 25 But in the fifth year you may eat of its fruit, to increase its yield for you: I am the Lord your God.

26 “You shall not eat any flesh with the blood in it. You shall not interpret omens or tell fortunes. 27 You shall not round off the hair on your temples or mar the edges of your beard. 28 You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the Lord.

29 “Do not profane your daughter by making her a prostitute, lest the land fall into prostitution and the land become full of depravity. 30 You shall keep my Sabbaths and reverence my sanctuary: I am the Lord.

31 “Do not turn to mediums or necromancers; do not seek them out, and so make yourselves unclean by them: I am the Lord your God.

32 “You shall stand up before the gray head and honor the face of an old man, and you shall fear your God: I am the Lord.

33 “When a stranger sojourns with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. 34 You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.

35 “You shall do no wrong in judgment, in measures of length or weight or quantity. 36 You shall have just balances, just weights, a just ephah, and a just hin: I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt. 37 And you shall observe all my statutes and all my rules, and do them: I am the Lord.”

LET THE LORD ADD HIS BLESSING TO THIS READING OF HIS WORD
Reflection: This reading speaks of how the Law of God instructs us to Love our Brothers and Sisters in Christ.
Of Course some of it only applies to the Old Testament saints regarding sacrificing animals.
But the Law of God is declared in how we are not to sin against God and our brothers and sisters and neighbors.
Our passage in 1 John 4:7-21 will be elaborating on how you treat your brother and sister applies to whether you are a believer or not.
With this in mind let us now Turn in our New Testament to 1 John 4:7-21
Repeat - 1 John 4:7-21

Introduction / Transition from Chapter 4 Verses 1-6

If you remember the sermon on True and False Prophets in 1 John 4:1-6 John turns Somewhat abruptly from his discussion of true and false spirits to present his readers with a further appeal to love one another.
He has already made it plain that love is one of the evidences of the new birth. Now he goes on to claim that Christians ought to love one another because God has loved them,
John as we will see gives the supreme demonstration of the meaning of love in the sending of his Son as an atoning sacrifice for sin.
So let us now dig in to the mind of Christ and how John speaks of
THE GOSPEL AND THE PERFECT LOVE OF GOD. REPEAT
SO at the end of the Sermon children tell your parents the sermon was about ?
THE GOSPEL AND THE PERFECT LOVE OF GOD.

Vs. 7-8 God Commands and encourages us to love.

7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.

Yes God does command you to Love people.
And why is this
Why would God command us to do something so basic as love each other.
Well the short answer is sin.
A more detailed answer is Original Sin.
Remember what John said back in chapter 3 verse 4
1 John 3:4

Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.

So sinful men and women like me and you do not love naturally.
We tend to sin against each other.
We tend to harbor grudges.
We tend to remember faults of others
We tend to remember how people sin against us.
We tend to want to want to fight with each other to get in the last word.
Becasue we tend to thinking we are always right.
But we all know that we sometimes fall into error.
Fall into sin
And don’t love or brothers and sisters in Christ as we should all the time.
But if we love at all according to John its because we are Born of God.
and we Know God.
and we are a child of God.
and we have a new heart.
And we should be comforted.
Because even though
We tend to sin against each other.
And We tend to harbor grudges.
And We tend to remember faults of others
And We tend to remember how people sin against us.
And We tend to want to want to fight with each other to get in the last word.
Because we always think we are right.
We are believers in Jesus.
And If you are a believer in Christ.
You will try to love one another in spite of all the evil things we do to each other.
So why do we have to be instructed like this By John?
Because assurance is a real struggle for many believers.
Because we know our hearts and we know the daily struggle with sin.
But John says if you can’t Love you don’t Know God.
If you don’t have a heart for others
And you think you are a believer
You might want to reexamine to see if you are in the faith.
Because how can we who have been given
grace and mercy and Love by Jesus not turn around and show love to each other.
So why is Love so important?
So why does God tell us to Love one another?
Because love is from God
It is the character of God
Its the essence or Being of God
Love is at the heart of the Gospel.
And God is Love according to John in verse 8

8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.

And this love is not words only but it is a sacrificial love.
A love that costs us something.
We have to as they say put our selves out there.
be willing to actually lay your life or reputation or your resources down for others.
You might ask me but why?
Why has God taken the initiative in showing Love?
Lets look at verses 9-11

Vs. 9-11 God has taken the initiative in showing love.

Becasue God loved his children so much that he manifested his love according to verse 9
And how did he manifest it?
God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him
God is the initiator of this love.
Our nature is to hate before we come to Christ.
But if we Love it is Becasue God first Loved us according to verses 10

10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

And God has called us to himself with this love.
GOD LOVED US
By giving his son to us.
By sacrificing his beloved Son Jesus on the Cross.
That is what the word propitiation means children.
Propitiation means substitute.
And what was substituted
What had to be substituted?
Christ’s blood had to be spilt because
We hate others
We are selfish
We are unloving
We have murderous and vile thoughts.
And we are still living under the curse of original sin from Adam and Eve.
Thats why Jesus had to die on the cross.
That is why his blood had to be spilt.
Becasue without his perfect sacrifice we were dead in or trespasses and sins. According to Ephesians 2:1
God loved us in sacrificing his son.
His son
By giving his loving Son up as a sacrifice to pay the penalty for our sins.
And so if we have been redeemed.
If we have been bought.
If Christ Blood was spilt for you.
We must love
And we can love now.
Because we are his children
Bought with his blood
And according to John in verse 11
11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
We ought to do it.
Because not only has God commanded us to do it
Not only Has God loved us
But he is gracious to us and enables us to love Him
And to Love each other.

because the true knowledge of God necessarily produces love in us.

true knowledge of God is that which regenerates and renews us, so that we become new creatures;
and as new creatures we must be conformed by Spirit of God to the image of God.
This command to love is found in other places of the new and old testaments its not only the teaching of 1 John but also Galatians and Leviticus.
Galatians 5:14 ESV
For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
See also Le 19:18

18 You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.

God is gracious because what he commands he has done.
And what he has done he enables us through his spirit to show Love to others.
So if this sacrificial love is something you desire to give to others
whether it is your wife
your husband
your children
children - “your brothers and sisters’
Adults - ‘the stranger who lives on your street who you never talk to but just wave to.
And what is one of the largest ways you can show love to them.
Well share the gospel with them.
Share the Love of God with those who do not know Christ.
And who knows what God might do through your witness of sharing the Gospel.
Sharing with people the truth that Christ came and died for people like them and me and you.
people who
sin against each other.
Brake the ten Commandments.
People who harbor grudges.
People who remember faults of others
People who remember how people sin against us.
People who want to fight with each other to get in the last word.
And why should we share the Gospel with others.
Becasue its the most loving thing we as fallen and redeemed people can do.
So as John said I say to you
Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
And we should be known for our love for God and others.
And remember Johns definition of Love so we don’t fall into a false view of Love according to human substituition
1 john 3:16 By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.
Laying ones life down for the sake of the gospel is Love.
So this is what we should seek to do to share the gospel
Even if it ends up costing of our lives.
That IS THE MESSAGE OF LUKE 9:23
And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
We are to deny our own wants and follow hard after Christ the author and finisher of our faith.
Next in verses 12-13 John says

Vs. 12-13 God’s people are known by their love because of the Holy Spirit.

Not because we are great but because the Holy Spirit is great.
According to verses 12-13
12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.
13 By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.
John is saying the very essence of God we can’t see with our eyes.
Have you or I ever seen God with our eyes?
The answer of course is no
Unless your one of those false prophets we read about in verses 1-6 of this chapter.
You know the ones who say I died and saw God and was revived on the doctors surgery table and now I am miraculously going to tell you everything you want to know about what happens after you die.
And then I will sell you a book about it
And we will make a movie about it.
And of course this is the furthest thing from the truth.
The Word of God says No man has ever seen God.
John 1:18 says

No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.

Unless the Holy Spirit has enlightened our minds we cannot know God.
Did you ever wonder why men and women who met Christ on earth during his earthly ministry didn't know who he was right away?
Becasue it wasn't until the Spirit of God enlightened and opened their eyes that they even caught a glimpse of who the messiah was.
And we are the same today. Have you ever read the Bible and never noticed something about God before.
And then all of a sudden the spirit of God has illuminated your mind about Christ and a different aspect of what God has done.
And now you know something more about your saviour.
So if you want to know God read your Bible and if you are his the Spirit will enlighten your mind in the knowledge of Christ.
Brothers and Sisters The essence of God is to our eyes invisible,
and some times incomprehensible to our minds;
but when we yield ourselves to the power of his love,
we are transformed by it,
we come to know him by the most pleasant effects,
If we are believers we experience his indwelling,
he is daily perfecting his own likeness and image in us.
This is the a very desirable way of knowing God,
The spirit of God continues to transform us more and more into the image of God.
And how will people know that we are Christs disciples
John 13:35 ESV
By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Next in verses 14-16 John tells us that

Vs 14-16 We should Love others by sharing the Gospel with them.
So what is your Loving testimony people of God
What do you want to scream from the roof tops about Jesus Christ.
What should we confess
Verses 14-16
14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.
15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.
16 So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
What a statement
What a testimony to declare to those who don’t know Christ
What a testimony for us that we have faith in the Messiah,
and the love of one another, is the principal against those apostates and false prophets John warned us about in Verse 1-6.
As a believer you can be sure of your faith because you have personally experienced the love of God.
You have come to know this love and have put your trust in it.
you are absolutely sure of its reality.
Literally it is “the love which God has in us.”
John is thinking not merely of the love for us shown by God in the cross
but also of the personal experience of his love in your hearts created by the Spirit (Rom. 5:5)
Which is also the message of Romans 5:5
5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
Next in Verses 17-18 John teaches us that

Vs 17-18 We should Love others by warning them of the Day of Judgement.

17 By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.
Brothers and Sisters what is another reason for this love to be perfected in us?
John tells us so that we will have confidence for the day of judgement.
Judgement upon this world is coming
And what will this Judgement look like
According to the Westminster Confession of Faith and the Bible this is what the Judgment will look like.
Chapter XXXIIIOf the Last Judgment
God has appointed a day, where he will judge the world, in righteousness, by Jesus Christ, (Acts 17:31)
to whom all power and judgment is given of the Father. (John 5:22,27)
In which day, not only the apostate angels shall be judged, (1 Cor. 6:3, Jude 6, 2 Pet. 2:4)
but likewise all persons that have lived upon earth shall appear before the tribunal of Christ,
to give an account of their thoughts, words, and deeds; and to receive according to what they have done in the body, whether good or evil.
The end of God’s appointing this day is for the manifestation of the glory of His mercy, in the eternal salvation of the elect; and of His justice, in the damnation of the reprobate, who are wicked and disobedient. \
For then shall the righteous go into everlasting life, and receive that fullness of joy and refreshing, which shall come from the presence of the Lord:
but the wicked, who know not God, and obey not the Gospel of Jesus Christ, shall be cast into eternal torments, and be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of His power.
As Christ would have us to be certainly persuaded that there shall be a day of judgment, both to deter all men from sin; and for the greater consolation of the godly in their adversity:
so will He have that day unknown to men, that they may shake off all carnal security, and be always watchful,
because they know not at what hour the Lord will come; and may be ever prepared to say, Come Lord Jesus, come quickly. Amen.
So do these promises of God bring us fear or do they bring us comfort?
If you are a child of God they should bring you comfort
And if your a child of the devil they should bring you fear and terror.
But John’s words are for the believer so we can have confidence in the day of judgement.
Becasue there is no fear in love,
and perfect love casts out fear.
and fear has to do with punishment,
But john last words are for the unbeliever
because whoever fears has not been perfected in love.
And if you are fearful there is only one that can quench that fear.
There is only one who has the balm for that fear.
It is the Lord Jesus Christ
The perfect substitute.
The propitiation for the sins of all who would turn to him in faith and repentance.
So Johns message is about The Gospel and the Perfect Love of God for the believer and unbelievers.
And hasn’t this been the message throughout the book of 1 John
The Gospel and the Perfect Love of God for the believer and unbelievers.
John finishes this chapter by taking it from the eternal judgment of God to the practical ways in which we can know if we are a child of God.
Because lets face it sometimes sin clouds our vision.
And we might think about ourselves in a way in which God doesn't think of us yet.
John in verses 19-21 says

Vs. 19-21 We should know if we are Christs by the test of living your life for others.

Lets look at verses 19-21
19 We love because he first loved us. 20 If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21 And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.
John now brings the spiritual to the practical everyday actions of a believer.
How do we express love for one another.
Some examples of expressing love for one another
Love maintains fellowship
1 Peter 4:8 ESV
Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.
2. Love promotes sacrificial service
1 Thessalonians 2:8 ESV
So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us.
3. In caring for the sick
Matthew 25:36 ESV
I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’
4. In meeting material needs
Matthew 25:35 ESV
For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,
5. In affectionate greetings
2 Corinthians 13:12 ESV
Greet one another with a holy kiss.
Some more examples of the demonstration of love for one another from scripture are
Ge 14:14–16

When Abram heard that his kinsman had been taken captive, he led forth his trained men, born in his house, 318 of them, and went in pursuit as far as Dan. 15 And he divided his forces against them by night, he and his servants, and defeated them and pursued them to Hobah, north of Damascus. 16 Then he brought back all the possessions, and also brought back his kinsman Lot with his possessions, and the women and the people.

So Abraham new what self sacrificing love was going to battle with those who would harm those under his care.
Exodus 32:31-32 31 So Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Alas, this people has sinned a great sin. They have made for themselves gods of gold. 32 But now, if you will forgive their sin—but if not, please blot me out of your book that you have written.”
Moses was willing to give his life like the savior Jesus Christ was for this love for his brothers and sisters.
Johns message of self sacrificial love
Love for others before ourselves
Should point us to the Lord Jesus Christ
Because according to verse 19 We love because he first loved us.
So 20 If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21 And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.
There is a greater difficulty implied by John,
We have a through present dependence upon our senses while we have these bodies
Can we say we have a love for the invisible a God who we haven’t physically seen with our eyes.
When we can’t even show love for the men that we daily see and converse with.
What we should learn from Johns statements are
That the love of God, and of our brother, that they are the roots of all the duty we owe to God and man, the fulfilling of the whole law, Matt. 22:37–39,
John lets us see the falsehood and absurdity of his audience and us if we think we are pious if we think that Loving God has only to do with the first table of the Law.
If we neglect the duties of the second table we are just as guilty before God.
Both tables of the law ought to be obeyed, because it is the same God who commands and requires both.
Love for God
And Love for or Brothers and Sisters in Christ.
And Love for those around us who are dying without the Gospel of Christ being preached to them.
So hopefully you now see what the
The Gospel and the Perfect Love of God” look like
Because
God Commands and encourages us to love in verses 7-8
God has taken the initiative in showing love verses 9-11
God’s people are known by their love because of the Holy Spirit verses 12-13
We should Love others by sharing the Gospel with them verses 14-16
We should Love others by warning them of the Day of Judgement verses 17-18
We should know if we are Christs by the test of living your life for others verses 19-21
These are the things that preach The Gospel and the Perfect Love of God
This is how God calls you to think and live for Jesus Christ.
Becasue it is Jesus Christ who laid his life down for the brothers.
It is Jesus Christ who encourages us,
shows love to us,
who has made possible for us to have the holy spirit,
It is Jesus who is the embodiment of the Gospel,
who will come to judge this world at the last day,
and who gave his life for his people in both his life and in his death.
And we pray along with John saying Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!
Let us Pray
CLOSING PRAYER
Father I pray that today your people have heard what the Gospel and the Perfect Love of God is.
Help us to apply this in our walk with you and with our brothers and Sisters in Christ.
Help us to show the Love of Christ to others in sharing your Word and Gospel Call to Salvation with the lost and this dying world.
Help us to warn them of the final judgement.
And help us to show love to them not just in word but in deed also.
And we pray in Jesus Christ name.
Amen
