Today, we continue our series entitling “There’s a Ghost.” Through out the month of June I am going to making a case for Biblical relevance of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. This series has been broken up by so today I want to recap what I taught three weeks ago in the sermon “ A Case for Another Baptism.
After reading the Robert Morris’ Book The God I never knew I began to study the Baptism in the Holy Spirit in a different way. In his book Robert Morris makes a Case for not one but three Baptism processes in the life of a Believer.
The First is Salvation- The Holy Spirit draws us into relationship with Jesus and upon our acceptance of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
Romans 10:9 ESV
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
At the point of Salvation :

Baptism of the Holy Spirit

1 Corinthians 12:13 ESV
13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.

The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is the covering of our sins in Christ Blood.

Water Baptism

Water Baptism is an act of obedience to the commands of scripture. Water Baptism is the what Jesus is commanding in:
Matthew 28:19 ESV
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

The Baptism In The Holy Spirit

I Believe that this follows the example of How God set us temple sacrifices in the Old Testament.
Here is the Rebuttal against this Idea of another Baptism. Ephesians 4:5 says there is only one baptism.
Ephesians 4:5 ESV
5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
Ephesians 4:1–7 ESV
1 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. 7 But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift.
So does this single verse negate:
Matthew 3:11 ESV
11 “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
Mark 1:8 ESV
8 I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
Luke 3:16 ESV
16 John answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
John 1:33 ESV
33 I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’
Acts 2:38 ESV
38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
What about:
Acts 8:12–16 ESV
12 But when they believed Philip as he preached good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 13 Even Simon himself believed, and after being baptized he continued with Philip. And seeing signs and great miracles performed, he was amazed. 14 Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, 15 who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16 for he had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Why would the Apostles Go to Samaria if the believers had all that they needed?
The Apostles went to share the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.
Then we encounter Paul in Ephesus.
Acts 19:1–7 ESV
1 And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. 2 And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.” 4 And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.” 5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying. 7 There were about twelve men in all.
Acts 19 Points to three important details
They were already Believers. Baptized in the Blood
They had not been Baptized in Jesus’ Name.
Paul introduces them to Baptism Number 3 the Holy Spirit.
Notice what happens when the Ephesian believers receive the baptism in the Holy Spirit: they spoke with tongues and prophesied. We see this pattern again and again throughout the book of Acts.

What is the Purpose of Spirit Baptism?

1. He is our Counselor.

John 16:7 ESV
7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.

2. He Intercedes for Us.

Romans 8:26–27 ESV
26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

3. He Renews Us Spiritually.

Titus 3:4–6 ESV
4 But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior,

4. He Helps us to Mature.

Galatians 5:22–23 ESV
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

5. He Empowers Us.

Acts 2:16–17 ESV
16 But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel: 17 “ ‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams;
Luke 24:49 ESV
49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
