Lessons on sin and grace from David’s life, and conclude with a call to Go Hard as a dad
From David we see...
The Destructive Effects of a Father’s Sin
The Destructive Effects of a Father’s Sin
Dad, your sin:
Dad, your sin:
won’t stay hidden - David tried to hide it, but you cannot hide it from God
“But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the Lord, and be sure your sin will find you out.
is dangerous and potentially devastating - David had no idea the cost of his sin
Be killing sin, or it will be killing you - John Owen
But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.
affects your family - David’s sin wrecked his home
The fact of sin affects your family (Ex. Dead thing has an odor)
Your pattern and response to sin affects your family (Hide sin, hide self. Isolation. Patterns of behaviors rub off)
The nature of your sin affects your family (Relational, Financial, Emotional, etc.)
“You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,
“The person who sins will die. The son will not bear the punishment for the father’s iniquity, nor will the father bear the punishment for the son’s iniquity; the righteousness of the righteous will be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked will be upon himself.
Dad, don’t underestimate the seriousness of your sin. But neither should you underestimate the power of God’s grace.
The Redemptive Effects of the Father’s Grace
The Redemptive Effects of the Father’s Grace
God loved David, showed him mercy and entered into covenant relationship with Him according to His grace.
What made him a “man after God’s own heart”? A heart of faith and trust in God.
But I have trusted in Your lovingkindness; My heart shall rejoice in Your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, Because He has dealt bountifully with me.
What kept him coming back to God, time and time again? He knew God’s redeeming Grace.
Psalm 51
What was the solid rock he stood upon throughout? The faithful promises of God fulfilled in Jesus the Messiah!
Justified by grace through faith (in Jesus) - God in Christ declares us righteous!
Ephesians 2:8-10
Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
Preserved and secured by grace for God’s redemptive plan
“Noone can separate us...”
2 Samuel 12:1 (NASB95)
Then the Lord sent Nathan to David. And he came to him and said, ...
Stop keeping yourself from the source of life! Run to Him and trust that He will work in and through you! Often even in spite of you! He has a plan. Lean into it!
Anointed for the work He is called to do!
To be a Prophet, a King, a Holy example
Dad, is it not also true of you? That to be a Dad after God’s own heart is to have faith in God? That His redeeming grace is trustworthy, and powerful both to save and then to preserve? God can save, He can preserve and restore and equip you for every step!
Knowing the grace of God, we can boldly and decisively act!
Call to Action
Call to Action
Like David We Must...
Go Hard after God
Worship Hard - Sing, give, read, pray, connect with God and His people!
Rejoice in God’s salvation! Believe in His justification and proclaim his Praise!
There is strength in the context of the family of God!
Trust Hard -
For this reason I also suffer these things; nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day.
You can’t, but God can! He isn’t through with you, nor with your family. Be the man God has proclaimed you to be in Christ and trust that God will use it. He fulfills every promise. You are more than a conqueror in Him. Let steadfast trust and faith in God be the bedrock of your life and legacy.
Repent Hard - Run to God! Over and over again! Boldly go and cast yourself at His mercy! Now!
Repentance is about being what He has declared us to be! David could repent because he trusted God!
Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed.
Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
In Christ We Can...
Go Hard for our family
Love sacrificially - give yourself!
Be available, consider the priorities of others,
Do the hard things - protect, provide, instruct - aim for the heart!
May God help us in our great and precious calling.
