review of part 1
components of the doctrine of salvation
In this part (2)
assurance of salvation
key questions
does the bible teach assurance of salvation?
can one’s salvation be lost?
What we believe
What we believe
We believe that salvation can be guaranteed, and that it is taugh in the Scripture.
Wrong Beliefs
Wrong Beliefs
1.) We cannot be sure of salvation in this life - we can only know after we die.
2.) Christians must go through another purification (purgatory) before they can enter heaven
3.) You are saved for as long as you believe - stop believing andyou lose your salvation
How the Bible teaches assurance of salvation
How the Bible teaches assurance of salvation
Jesus Guaranteed Salvation
28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.
Jesus is the author of Eternal salvation
9 And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him,
Jesus’ priestly work guarantees complete salvation
25 Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.
a better sacrifice - the blood of a sinless sacrifice
a better covenant - built on better promises
a better High Priest - unchanging, undying
22 by so much more Jesus has become a surety of a better covenant.
23 Also there were many priests, because they were prevented by death from continuing.
24 But He, because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood.
Jesus’ saving work is “plenary” or complete
it covers your whole lifetime - past, present, future
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her,
26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word,
27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.
God’s love sent Jesus to be our Savior (John 3.16)
love on the cross - He died for our sins
love in the present - He sanctifies and cleanses us
love in the future - He will persent us to Himself
it covers your whole being - body, soul and spirit
23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
6 being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;
How Jesus “preserves” the saved
How Jesus “preserves” the saved
They are kept by the power of God
4 to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you,
5 who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
They are “confirmed” by the Holy Spirit
their faith is confirmed
8 So God, who knows the heart, acknowledged them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He did to us,
9 and made no distinction between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.
13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,
14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.
30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
you are sealed to your inheritance
(Peter’s view is the same)
5 who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials,
7 that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ,
8 whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory,
9 receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls.
v. 5 - you are kept by the power of God (Holy Spirit)
v. 6 - you rejoice in your future salvation
v. 7 - you faith goes through testing in order to be proven genuine
the Holy Spiit has already confirmed it genuine
the trials show to the world that is it genuine
v. 8 - you love Jesus and rejoice in him
v. 9 - you act and live your salvation NOW
The Holy Spirit is the WITNESS
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
6 This is He who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not only by water, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth.
9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; for this is the witness of God which He has testified of His Son.
10 He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son.
13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.
The Holy Spirit SANCTIFIES the believer’s life
23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
13 But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth,
Conclusion
Conclusion
How do we correct the wrong views on salvation -
Wrong view 1 - we cannot be sure…
maybe you do not have the confirmation of teh Holy Spirit
maybe you do not understand the dotrine
Wrong view 2 - christians must be urified in the purgatory...
Jesus has guaranteed our salvation to the end
Jesus preserves us
Wrong vew 3 - you are saved for as long as you believe
our salvation does not depend no one’s faith BUT in the OBJECT of that faith - Jess Christ
faith is only the means by which we have access to His saving work
God guarantees our salvation by confirming our faith - that it is genuine
